I think you misunderstood your friend at the gym.

At your level, there really is no reason to be doing fingerboard exercises, but if you do, you should be training using the open crimp.

Look at this page --->, and emulate either of the first two photos (open hand or open crimp). Closed crimp gives you more power, but should be saved for special occasions, as it's a great way to pop a pulley.
