Lone Pine - Alabama Hills, perfect for beginners (climbs behind Ted's Shred). Three hours up the 395 from L.A., and you drive into the hills and walk maybe one minute to the climbs. Did I say convenient? Ask in town about the fishing, it's pretty popular. I've taken my kids and they enjoy the small lake in the Portal, which is stocked, but the streams below have lots of places to catch trout. Camp at Tuttlecreek Campground for a few bucks. Clean, nice latrines, and a stream running right through camp, only five minutes from hot coffee and breakfast in town. No crowds and you can see the Milky Way at night.
