Cord: I hear this used to mean anything from what I think of as strong string to a dynamic lead rope.
Utility Cord: This is the 1/4 inch stuff I bought at Home Depot to lash things on top of my car.
Rope: Something usually stronger than cord but not always.
Cordelette: This term is more about how a roughly 20 foot length of cord can be used to rig together an anchor rather than the actual material. At the same time, most regular climbing partners assume a certain cord of particular diameter is involved.
In climbing discussions, you'll need to be thinking about the context to know what is meant regarding cord versus rope. I'm not sure you'll ever here someone mentioning taking utility cord on a climb- but you never know about those big wall climbers. And if you search for cordelette, you should pretty quickly come across some photos to see what I mean.
