In reply to: seeing this post up for so long it's hard not to wonder if maybe he had some reason to make himself disappear. I mean, people who are victims of crime usually turn up sooner than this.
Does it really matter if he disappeared intentionally or (and I hope this isn't the case) fell victim to a crime? I'm a Police Officer down here in Australia and I have dealt with a few Missing Persons. I have seen the pain and suffering of relatives who don't know what has happened to loved one.
The more publicity this gets the more chance of getting answers. It is better to know either way than not to know at all. It is very common for our service (PD) to circulate missing person details years after they have gone missing.
Keep spreading the word and pray for the best.
Just a thought, if he has a passport, check with the Dept of Immigration (or whatever your equivalent is) to see if he has left the country. Also does he have a mobile phone (cell phone), it is very easy to see if a phone has been used and what suburb it was used in.
There is nothing wrong with asking the local police if they have checked these things. (It may not be standard practice, believe it or not)
Good luck, keep looking. Even the smallest bit of information can lead to a result!
