Lots of people don't pay the day fees, etc. at the Gunks. I just think it's a bit inconsiderate to boast about it online. Gives others that don't know any better the idea it's okay.

But then maybe I'm just a stodgy old brown-noser or whateva.

I didn't say that I never paid. I buy day passes, just not the membership.

CB - the membership is the same thing as the day pass, except it's more economical if you enter the preserve frequently- $85 per year, vs. the cost of a day pass. You don't have to hassle with stopping to pay each visit and put the sticky tag on your pack. Plus, you can then deduct from your taxes. You made that comment in a snide way, though I'm sure you didn't really intend to be so.......

Looks like you plan on partying in the preserve at least 8 times, so......you do the math! Just gotta cough up the scratch in one lot; that can be the tough spot for someone on a tight budget. Beer....year pass. Beer....year pass.....Why must one be forced to choose!!!???

Yeah happie, that's the caveat. Its alot of money from me to come up with at one time...especially when I need to budget for gas, food, tools, beers, etc. Not that other people don't have to pay those things, but I'm a student...blah, blah, blah.

Does the Mohonk Preserve take credit cards online?

If you don't do it at the Visitor's Center, you can print out a form and send it in, then they'll send you a pass. The downside to that is you risk not having your pass arrive in the mail before your next trip, but that just means you have to go to the visitors center to get a temp.

http://www.mohonkpreserve.org/member/individual.php

If you include one of your day pass bands from less than two weeks ago and a photo-copy of your student ID, the price drops down to $65.

Yes, yes, I have printed out the form. I plan to fax it tomorrow. Anyone know how long it will take for them to send it to me? Next trip is tentatively planned for the last weekend of the month.

Thanks Jack for reminding me to include a copy of my student ID. Unfortunately, I think my last day pass is past the expiration date ;-)

Yeah, I bought my season pass and realized after I'd left my car that I could get a discount if I gave them a wristband from the last week. The problem being that I assumed I'd thrown out all my wristbands previously used. So, I shell out the bucks, grumbling the whole time about how I should have saved those darned wristbands, and as I walk back to my car what do I find all shriveled up in the depths of my pocket?

Gah. I coulda killed myself for stupidity.

Taino, kimmyt, and happie-

Y'all don't have to support me anymore. I bit the bullet and faxed in a membership form to the Mohonk Preserve today. Hopefully I'll have my very own flashy little yellow member car by my next visit.

Maybe I'll even post a picture of me posing with it online when I get it.

You got a flashy yellow car for a measly $65 bucks? Mannnnn....... all I got was a laminated card, and I paid $85! (You made a typo/ I made a joke.)

Jeez - what's up with the attitude, betty? It must be nice to think you deserve to be exempt from the rules that are asked of us for the priveledge of climbing on private land. Access that CAN be taken away and, if you are up on what is going on in the area, has been a point of contention recently. If you've been buying the day pass, why are you making yet another snide comment about not paying your way?

Maybe it might help to imagine that your $65 helped defray the cost of rescue for that 15 year old girl who rapped off the end of her rope last week. She was a newbie, entrusting those with more experience to keep her safe. As you posted, the rescuers could have as easily been picking up the pieces of you.

Jeezus...can we discuss anything else on here besides Gunks drama? I'll throw in my .02 cents..fuck the Gunks and it's NYC-like scene. Flame away.
Anyways, I hope to get to the Dacks soon..I'm gonna be at the Glen getting spanked on some old projects this weekend, but hopefully soon I'll be up in the north country. Who's been to the Dacks lately/what did you climb?

Kimmy, where are you going to be? I'm heading down tomorrow, thinking of either the Beer Walls or Barkeater.
If you see a woman with long red hair, um, I'll be the fellow next to her.
Might end up swimming at Chapel Pond afterward.

Well.........the old saying was "If ya can't stand the heat....." but in an era of the nanosecond, it might be go something like "If ya can't stand the she-et, stay outa the sewer!"

I jest, sir. I jest. But, to show I'm a good sport, I'll take your quasisuggestion of getting back to nature, and post some of my recent snapshots. From Peterskill.

Actually, erm, I have no freaking clue. I asked my partner and he gave me a very vague "I don't know, we'll see what we feel like". So. But I'll keep my eyes out for your red-headed partner and you.

Just got my Gunks pass in the mail. Too bad the rain probably won't let me use it this week.

Before the rain came, I spent the day at Little Falls top-roping some favorites and jumping on The Virgin, which I hadn't worked since last season. No further headway this time, but at least I didn't do any worse. I'm not sure I'll ever deflower that one.

14 days and counting

Damn rain. We ended up in a gym in Toronto today on account of rain, and ended up cancelling plans for Little Falls tomorrow. Now my shiny new Friends will have to sit here in my apartment unloved, lonely, and pining to be placed in some sexy little crack.

14 days and counting, indeed. And the weather next weekend will hopefully be more cooperative for a "local" trip.

You can only deduct contributions in excess of $85. (or the cost of whatever type of pass you buy e.g family, biking, climbing+biking etc). This is basic IRS rules re. payments to a non-profit that get you something of value in return. Now if you were to buy an annual membership and then never use it for some reason, injury or relocation perhaps, you MIGHT consider that you got nothing of value for your $85 and then you could deduct it.

I'll leave it up to you to convince the IRS of this interpretation however. :P

OK Mike, I'm confused can I or can I not deduct my Gunks pass from my taxes?

Jack- how long did it take you to get you laminated card once you turned the membership form in?

You can't deduct the $85. If you sent in, say $300 then you could deduct 215 as a charitable contribution.

...it took a month for mine to come in the mail.....but I sent a check in the mail, as opposed to c/card. Maybe they had to wait for it to clear and all that. Even so, next time you're up, you can stop by the visitors center and get a temporary card to use until your shiny laminated card arrives.

Browsing Gunks.com I noticed they had a recent interview with Ron Knapp, the president of the board of directors for the Preserve. It's full of info on where your money goes and what the Preserve wants to accomplish regarding camping, parking, closures, and other areas important to climbers.
