Fifteen or twenty years ago, a friend had a poster of someone hanging from one hand and one foot while drinking a beer on some insane wall, without a rope. A really cool photo! Does anyone know anything about this? Who was it, what route, what is the story? Did I dream this? Thanks. Chad

The picture you are thinking of was a shot of John Sherman hanging off of Punks in the Gym down in Arapiles drinking out of an "oil Can" of Vic Bitters so something. It was a poster from Patagonia at one point. If you want me to see if we still have it let me know and I will take a look and see if I can find it.

I was pretty sure Patagonia had used the image but if they did there are no more of the posters in the wharehouse sorry. It looks like it will be ebay. Sorry

The climb is 'Lord of the Rings' it's in Oz and was a patagucci poster. There are worse things to have on your wall.

In reply to: AND... there is a hidden bolt at Sherman's waist to which he is clipped. THAT is part of the story that I do not think I have ever heard! So the wuss was clipped in to drink his beer? Now I have lost all interest in the photo  . CM

I think that Sherman was clowning an earlier photograph of some lycrad climber who was basically posing for the camera while climbing. A friend of mine had a book, don't know the name, and there was a very similiar picture of Lord of the Rings. Funny stuff.

In reply to: I think that Sherman was clowning an earlier photograph of some lycrad climber who was basically posing for the camera while climbing. Part of my reason for posting this was that my memory or imagination had Derek Hersey drinking a Fosters on this climb. So, there was another photo--could Hersey, or a Fosters have been in the other. It would be nice to know that my mind has a few links still connected. CM

I figured it was making fun of posed pictures. I mean, if your going to pose a picture, do it right. Right? I also heard that you can traverse in to that point on easier terrain, and thats apparently what Sherman did. Don't know if thats true.

It was Kurt Albert (Inventor of the red point) who posed like this in Frankenjura, Germany. Completely free solo. And probably before Sherman did so.

Wearing kletterhosen, with an open mug, on a 5.10, hanging by one hand, feet dangling in the air (Kurt Albert signature move), looking up at the camera, mug in hand, smile on face... NO hidden bolt at waist. Cheers DMT

Did he lug the mug, or what? If so, how did he NOT spill it?! (Or how did he fill it?) Great picture, by the way!

I like John However I can remember many a year ago we took a trip to Hueco. Vermin, Skinner and Kurtzman kept everyone in the quanset hut awake untill 3 am with loud obnoxious partying. I think the 20 or so ppl trying to sleep (myself included) wanted to strangle them. Can look back and laugh at it now.
