I sure wish that Latin would go for a long rappel without a helmet. It would make life easier on us all and give Majid something to do.

As nice as it would be to get rid of the Latin. I'm not sure you really want to give Majid anything to do.

Go stalk Majid and read a few of his threads to get a feel for his posting style.

The "smokin that shit" thread is what spawned the non-fall thread. Majid claimed that this guy who was smokin' some weed and then jumped out the window and was injured was somehow related to climbing.

I don't think that there have EVER been any threads that have taken off as quickly as this one. Most are slowly answered and take thier time, except for the Massholes. But that is a huge pool of people. They are lucky to see one page per-day, this thread has now become around 4 pages per-day. With about 6 people primarily posting here.

I think it is the reason the site was down yesterday.... They cant keep up with chossmonky.
This one has been close to dying a couple of times.

It wasn't until the lurkers came out that it started to explode.

Actually, it wasn't until the post conflict started that it really caught fire and took off out of control.
post conflict??

Since a posting war was never actually declaired it must just be a posting conflict. It's like a war but not officially.

Honestly, since I've been posting so much lately its hard not to be overly present in any thread having something to do with a topic of interest to me.

I think by slowing down the Brent thread more people will be interested. Or at least the six people who reply won't loose interest.

Hello Team,

i see the party has moved, or at least split into this thread?

Anyway, I admit defeat. I cannot possibly keep up with the ferocious posting pace set by chossmonkey in the Fishing and Fabrication thread! 7 pages of replying to himself! I bow down.

Maybe if the site didn't take a year to load each page, I could buzz through that choss, but alas, it is painfully slow.

But post on! I think from now on, I will only read the most recent page though. :?

++...?

Hey Dave,
seems like the prudent thing to do.

I will say i've read them all, but by "read" i mean scanned most of the stuff unless is seemed relevant.

Moving on.

Maybe another chat thread should start? Or maybe that chat thread will actually become a chat thread, and not a "lets all listen to chossmonkey talk fast about nothing" thread.

Maybe if the site didn't take a year to load each page, I could buzz through that choss, but alas, it is painfully slow.

But post on! I think from now on, I will only read the most recent page though. :?

++...?

I've been trying to get things to move over here to restore the Brent_E thread to its former glory.

That thread has taken on a life of its own, and while I'm a major part of that I think everyone who has replied to that thread lately, with the exception of Mr.E has some repsonsibility in it.

If you haven't read all the pages, how would you know if there were 7 pages, which there are not, of me replying to myself?

Hey Dave,
seems like the prudent thing to do.

I'm not the only one talking fast in that thread. I wasn't even online for half of yesterday.

I thought you were going to try and stimulate conversation?

Irony?
I'm not here to stimulate conversation.

I'm here to stimulate my post count.

Stimulating conversation is good way to stimulate more posts, but at the same time I'm not above taking a target of opportunity. :robert:

There is way too much stimulation going on here. My brain is beyond stimulation, and you people are doing nothing to stimulate me any further.

i'll bet mowz does something for you.

No, but his sig does...

I'll take some of the blame... The conversation, while at times was inane, flowed easily in there.

Hey, I didn't start this one.

I figured it would be good to take some of the clusterfuck out of the Brent_E thread and have it over here instead.

The original thread isn't showing up for me right now on the community page. So I tried to click on it from the suggested threads at the bottom of this thread, and got a "does not exist" message. Are they trying to disappear it?

You obviously didn't see the first post.

The Brent_E thread is going to make this site explode!!

Yesterday I saw the same thing except when I clicked in the "similar topics" I could get in.

Its just the server melting. This site has been fucked more often than not the last few days. :?

Perhaps we can discuss how Epoch is a "Centrist" and can't make up his mind more often than not.

I found on that test if you go right down the middle saying maybe to everything you hit dead center.

“The deep pool of centrist opinion in the country, that essential guarantee against violent political upheavals, is being dangerously shaken”
How is that? :?

Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeedoubyah....

There are allot of unhappy people. This administration is fekkin weeeeetawded.
So you think a bunch of people are going to abandon their centrist opinions in favor of something more extreme?
No, I don't think that will happen. America (Americans) as a whole is (are) lazy. I certainly wouldn't start it. There's too much paperwork involved.
That's kinda what I was thinking.
What, that you are too lazy to fill out any kind of paperwork and that is the reason that you post way too much??
Can you blame me?

Paperwork sucks.

Brent and I are planning an ice trip.

If I didn't have to drive Rebecca around too I would be flyingout to Calgaryon the 20th and climbing ice on the 21st. :?

Once it gets cold enough here, I'll be climbing ice nearly everyday. :P

Holy crap Redleg!

You must either be really bad at thin hands or you got a really good deal on #1 Camalots!

I don't understand all the #2's though. That is the size most people don't need.

Redleg's meager rack. vvvvvvv

it's a nice rack!!

But the # 2's you say...YOU say you don't need because it's a bomber size....but some people don't like to climb bomber sizes without gear. I wouldn't know cuz i have never properly climbed anything resembling a crack.

Or I could be climbing a couple times a month at Indian Creek. I only have a small half rack.

And I pretty much suck at all types of crack. But I am getting better. But I am always on off sizes for me. My partner has big hands, while mine are small. Since he is leading, we are always on perfect fingers, hands, fist for him.

As for the #1's, there is a route that requires between 10 and 15 of them. My 5 doe s not get you very far.

I don't remember the name, but it is across the creek on the side where most people do not climb. We were looking at it because it looked like an easier climb for me. It sucks when everything is 5.10 and you are not a 5.10 climber yet. But we did not climb it because we only had 8 #1's and my partner did not want to run it out.

But as for the number 2's, they get used alot. Could not get by without the 2's and 3's.

But the #6 is my partners and I's favorite, because when you need it, you really need it.

bigger gear seems to be like that. I've been in the same situation with #4 friends. although it's not nearly as big!

the best part was trying to fiddle in a #11 hex in the back of this wide crack. Can't do that at the creek, i'm sure!!!

#2 is noramlly perfect hands to good hands for most people.

For me its #2 to tight #3. When I was out at the Tower I would just need the #2' at the end of the perfect hands section, as I ahd just ran it out a through the whole section and need to conserve my smaller units for the tight hands above.

#1 can be the start of missery for me. Lets not dicuss 1.5 and 2 Friend size (.75 Cam?).

Ok, after a trip to the guidebook..... can't find the #1 cam route, but did fond one for the Chossmonkey.

Buuny Slope 5.9+ 160 feet. Requires either 10-15 #2 camalots or 1(2), 5(2.5) And 7(3.0) friends.

You might be a Chossmonkey if you only need a #2 camalot at the top.

Its good that you always have to climb your bad sizes. If you always climbed the good sizes you wouldn't get better. I'll bet once you start getting good at the bad sizes you'll be the ropegun rather than your partner because you'll be cruising every crack size rather than just "your" size. You can then laugh your ass off watching him struggle up your bomber hand crack that is his thin hands nightmare.

Yes, it is an easy route for the creek, but if you did fall, it would be the end of the Chossposter. Besides, if I was on the belay end of the rope, I would not be willing to let you run out 160 feet.

And #1 camalot is generally 5.11 stuff, but sometimes I have an easier time with that. My smaller hands and fingers fit better.

the best part was trying to fiddle in a #11 hex in the back of this wide crack. Can't do that at the creek, i'm sure!!!
I think Super Crack was first done on hexes.

I think there were about 3 of them used or were able to be.

that's pretty disgusting, really. But if you're strong, probably not all that bold. Sounds like a few climbers don't place at all on that route.

True, a run out while crack climbing isn't normally quite the same as a run out on a face route. But at the time it was a pretty hard route.

you'll eclipse me on ice quite quickly, methinks. Although it was nice for all those 5 minutes when i was better at you at something climbing!

what did you back off of?? Swaze??? The slush pile?!?!

That was kinda fun. I think rebecca was scared!!!

If you were willing to put in the time I'm sure you could far eclipse me.

I wanted nothing to do with leading that day at Swaze. I could tell that was a death trap just looking at it. I'm thinking of that route at the Dacks, when it was so damn cold. It was my lead and the ice was dinner plating so bad and my picks didn't feel like they were sticking worth a shit.

That day at Swaze was scary. I thought for sure the whole thing was going to come crashing down with you on it. Rebecca wasn't the only one concerned for your safety. That was good for me though. It likely wasn't as crazy as we thought it was, other than the part of you having no gear.

Maybe, but I doubt it. I will be on ice in two weeks. And the rock season never ends here. In fact the Stronghold is perfect now. :D

It's true you can climb on rock there all winter. I've spent a lot of time down in AZ climbing rocks and hiding from winter. Though the locals tend to bundled up like they are climbing ice.

but you just wait, Red. I'll get out a couple times a week when ice season occurs...which is likely in 2 months, sadly.

Its not that its limestone (Or is it really dolostone?), its that it is shitty heavily fractured limestone that is all mostly off limits.

If all the rock wasn't off limits and if it would ever get cold and stay cold there could probably be a lot of really good mixed routes around here in the winter.

it's both limestone and dolostone. The dolostone is usually the more massive, less fractured caprock. When you look at the cliff you'll see some rock (usually the less layered and less fractured type) and what you don't see is mudstone that has eroded and been covered with sediment.

There would be some good mixed routes for sure. A lot of them I think would have to be bolted, though. Not that it's a bad thing as it seems a lot of the rock that would form a mixed line is overhung.

Swaze that day was no problem. It wasn't bonded, no, cuz of all the water running. But there it's not steep enough to really fall. And there wasn't a pint in gear. :? fun day. Too bad your ripped your coat.,

Its doubtful only because you doubt yourself. I bet I could have you redpointing 5.12's in a year if you would make climbing a reasonable priority.

And no, I'm not stronger than you. I just know how to channel my strength more efficiently. I have way better technique and know more about movement. You're strong, but you just can't focus the power. Besides if you climbed more you would get even stronger.

You have a lot of potential. That's why I try so hard to get you to climb more.

As I remember you did slip. It was that you nearly fell.

I think it would have been a bad scene if I would have went through with trying to lead it.

well, i appreciate the compliment. It is inspirational, and I mean that.

I think part of the prob (all of the problem) is in my head that I am comfy on easy routes and actually like them a lot. Climbing 10's of 11's would be good but i can't see myself there and that is the start to bad events.

practice.

your shell will be fine. Check out community for the vids i posted (some good stuff there).

and the fall there would have been bad. I was 15 feet up or so. I think i had a good self belay on one tool, though.

amateur mistake! :D

The best part of climbing hard is going to a cliff seeing a line that inspires you and climbing it, regardless of the grade.

and I asked Jackie if she wanted to go and told her it was dependent on us having 4 people. She was SUPER excited about it. And now with me having an extra set of pons and you having many many tools we can accommodate her.
And I asked a friend about a place to stay up there and she said she would take a look. She said she knows someone who rents a place and may have a free room we can crash in. That would be awesome and VERY cheap.

Me having many many sets of tools? I'll only have two sets when I get the Fusions.

I'll have to try and remember to call Dave tomorrow. He doesn't get on the internet very much.

Does Jackie have boots?

We need to figure out where we are staying pretty quick if we need to stay at that hostel, if they even have room still.

If worse came to worse and it was just the two of us we could stay in my truck. It would likely be miserable but I think it would work okay.

with Rebecca's you have 3 sets. If I can get those X15's going we could have 4 sets plus my other set....FIVE SETS!

Jackie can likely borrow some boots from a friend (which are actually my old boots).

If you don't want to go to N.O. why does it matter if it digs into their plans?

You are an adult. You should be making your own decisions. Tell them how it is.

Just tell them you've had plans to go for longer than they have.

If you don't want to go to N.O. why does it matter if it digs into their plans?

You are an adult. You should be making your own decisions. Tell them how it is.

Just tell them you've had plans to go for longer than they have.

that was the plan. and I have had plans, jebus.

Good.

All you have to fear, is fear itself.

Its not like your dad is going to spank you. What is he going to do? Cut off your college money?

That would probably be the best thing he could do, not that he would at this point anyway. You are mostly done with school, you can get loans to finish and not be crazy in debt, it might even help you focus better having to pay for it yourself. No doubt the time you would free up not having to fulfill his obligations constantly would be a huge help to your schooling as well.

Worst case scenario, you have to scrap University. Go take up a trade and do your apprenticeship. You'll be making money while you learn, and if you pick the right field you can still make pretty good money.

To be honest, I spent more time doing the stuff I love when I made less money.

Well, I guess I do get to do my wife a lot. But otherwise....

Don't over spend at X-mas. There is nothing wrong with having a tight budget for X-mas spending. If you can only afford $25 per person then so be it. You shouldn't feel obligated to go buy your dad some $200 piece of what ever.

That would be good if you could sell some handles. You should also learn to start accepting compensation from friends when you help them out and they offer it to you. Chances are it comes with few if any strings attached, they are just trying to help you out, similar to how you helped them.

and i am not even close to being done with school. i have 3 more years.

i don't usually spend a lot of money on people other than Val, but i am trying to make her gift this year.... i just have to find some stainless steel.

ahhh, Nate, you'll help me out in the future and debt like that just gets absorbed. I appreciate it.

It took her less than five years (4year& 4 months) and she had a full year of work terms.

Changing your major doesn't help your cause, but I'd have to think if you were spending more time on your studies on the weekend than hanging out with your dad, changing majors and retaking classes wouldn't be in the equation.

Then agian some people just aren't cut out for University.

well, i changed my major 3 times, physics, engineering, science.

i also had to basically redo a year. So, in my forth year of school, i'm a second year student.

i'm not cut out for university. I fucking hate it. But I have to get a degree at this point. I have to get something or this whole endeavor was just a waste of time. And i'm trying to do that now.

Sometimes you just need to cut your losses.

You can do three more years of school and hopefully get a degree, then do something totally not what you went to school for. Is that making the most of your situation?

Regardless of what you end up doing if you learn from it, its not a total waste of time.

Posting here is a waste of time.

i likely won't use the education directly. But having something that says "you're not a moron" like a ticket or diploma is good. everybody has one, yes, but i think i can make the most of it.

Brent, have you ever though of taking some time off from university and sorting out what you really want to do?

You're so totally focused on getting a degree that you're loosing sight of what else is out there. If you really don't know what you want to do you have to get out there and try different things. I was lucky that I didn't find engineering bad. You're trying different things, but they're just variations on each other.

sure, i've thought about it. I have also thought that I want to get on with things - get out of school and get a damn job to make some money. I think, honestly, i know what i really want to do. I really want to just design and build things. You know that has always been my passion, which is why i went into engineering. Sadly it didn't work for me, becuase i didn't work for it.

but i don't know how engineering and science are variations? They are totally different, except they are both academic. Working construction every summer for the last 7 years has given me a bit of perspective, too.

Isn't it ironic that if you would have just buckled down at the start and really worked hard you would be nearly finished?

With the cycle you are in you are you may likley never get out until you make the commitment to whatever it is you really want to do. You won't do that until you decide what it is YOU really want to do, not mom, not dad, not val, but maybe chossy and GG.

I think that's the crux of the whole university thing... it shouldn't even matter how well you do, but somehow society bows down the 4.0 GPA... wooo fcuking hoo!! For me it's the experience, the learning how to prioritize, the satisfaction of finishing five projects/essays/exams all done at the same time and knowing I can do it.

I'm lucky enough that I'm doing a masters and don't have to use so many more years to finish... heck, it took me long enough to get around finishing my bachelor. Right now though, I wanna get friggin' done.... I've got a beautiful wife waiting for me and that is plenty fuel for my drive to get this done in two years flat.... maybe 1.75 years.... we'll see.

I know what I want and I guess that's the important thing. For me, it's more important what I want with my life and not what job I want. I at least see my extra education as a bonus towards getting something that resembles a career that I'd like to continue with.

Good luck Brent_e finding your path.

Study hard in school and go climbing if you have any extra time after studying.

Or you could finish this semester and go on the road for a while.

Maybe do both.

If school goes well after giving it your 100% attention keep with it and finish it off.

Truthfully if you are really motivated to get it done, a 4 year degree can be done in less time.

My sister did her undergrad and vet school in 7 years. That is noramally a 8 year+ program.

It'll be something like "Estimating groundwater recharge in upland mesquite rangeland, using soil chloride as an indicator".... I'm also looking at the effects of clearing vegetation on possibly increasing soil moisture in these rangeland areas.

Be happy you are only going for a four year degree. Like I said, my sister did 8+ in 7 and worked a summer job plus weekends durring school. Plus being stressed out and depressed.

Good luck Brent_e finding your path.

solidarity, Brother.

:D

what is your thesis on?
It'll be something like "Estimating groundwater recharge in upland mesquite rangeland, using soil chloride as an indicator".... I'm also looking at the effects of clearing vegetation on possibly increasing soil moisture in these rangeland areas.
:P ....hey.... you asked.

sounds cool. i'm taking geology bases courses, too, so this stuff is neat!

So you are thinking that clearing vegetation would increase soil moisture? That seems counterintuitive.

Every thesis sounds cool when it's snazzed up with fancy semantics. Basically, he could have written: "Does pulling up weeds make it wetter? I think so..."

Truthfully if you are really motivated to get it done, a 4 year degree can be done in less time.

yeah, you do it in the summer or you take more classes during the semester or both.

I can't do that. I have to, HAVE TO, work in the summer, and even taking 4 classes a semester gets me stressed out and depressed.

I think I'm going to let Bec field this one for the most part.

Ummm, I think I've given Brent enough lectures of how one dedicates themselves to their studies. It took me a while to really learn how to study, and in engineering its bloody hard to do it on your own. But I've already told Brent all about that.

In the end I found two things that really helped me were to read the text book and underline or take jot notes from it. And to take my evenings and Sundays and go to the school and just spend the day there working with my classmates.

But both take time and concentration, neither which Brent seems to think he has.

Not at all. Vegetation uses soil moisture and in semi-arid and arid environments will use ALL precipitation, especially in summer. Winter precipitation events could provide small amounts of groundwater recharge. If you clear the vegetation, lower transpiration... although increased evaporation. Evaporation is low in winter, so if your rainfall in your "desert" or semi-arid shrubland is winter dominated, clearing the vegetation will increase your soil moisture and ultimately feed your groundwater levels.

....this time you asked!

That's exactly right.

Well I guess there is a lot of range in the removal of vegetation, and I'd bet it would largely depend on the soil type and the vegetation type.

So many variables, so little time. :?

PRK

A week before I could stop wearing goggles in the shower and I could get dirt and crap in them again, 1.5 weeks before I felt comfortable to drive again.

I still say if I was faced with the option of Lasik vs PRK I'd do the PRK all over again. You don't have to be as careful about your eyes.

Is prk more expensive than lasik?
Did it hurt?
My sister ended up with "halos" from lights for a week or two, anything like that with prk?
I'm getting sick of contacts and my health insurance will help defray the costs of lasik.

Naw it's probably the sport wankery that goes on now and then.
Not so much.

Well, I'm stil angry about daffodil.
I don't blame you.

Hey how long did your eyes take to heal from your lasik?
You did get lasik right?

It didn't hurt the day of. The day after I didn't enjoy (but they give you these lovely numbing eye drops!). After a few days there was not more pain. A guy in the office here also had PRK and he said he didn't even get the pain the first day. I'm a wuss.

Biggest annoyance while healing is that the eyes heal at different rates, so you get fluctuating vision. Not a problem until you have to stare at a computer screen all day, but even then it can be managed but dimming your screen and taking periodic breaks.

No halos, I came out with 20/20 vision, just one eye a little dry still. I hated contacts, couldn't wear them all day, and glasses suck. Having my eyes fixed is amazing!

Yeah, in here.

To tell you the truth I am pretty disappointed you guys didn't all jump on him for it. There wasn't much I could say. I figured the best thing I could do is let it go. It one thing for him to try and flame me, its quite another for him to drag Bec into it.

I didn't want to touch that with a 10' pole. Everybody knows that's way out of line. You guys can talk about my mangina all day long, but everybody knows talking about somebody's lady is off limits. I thought maybe he'd go back and clean up his crap so I didn't even want to quote him. All I can say for him is it's easy to slag others when you don't put anything out there. It is also not worthy of even acknowledging because all that would do is blow it out of proportion and disguise what really went down anyway. That's how I rationalize my own cowardice and lack of chivalry, anyway.

It seems everyones reaction was about the same: Ignore it and maybe it'll go away.

I was the comment, and because I'm not witty enough to come up with a good enough response (honestly, I didn't even know how to start dealing with that) I handled it in other ways.

I'm not talking to myself. It just looks that way. If I were talking to myself there wouldn't be replies in the "other" thread.
