More to the point; How far would you drive for one days climbing, two, three, a week. What are your limits.
I have driven two and a half to three hours for a day. That would be 150 to 200 miles. I have driven 250 to 300 for a weekend and gotten rained out. I have driven 450 miles for two days climbing but only once. That works out to about fifteen hours of driving for fourteen hours climbing. It would be more climbing in the summer. Post up, What do you think.
I found this same question done in 04 but there are lots of new folks here now.

I have to drive about 4 hours for reasonably good roped climbing, 2 1/2 hours for ghetto bouldering. It's probably better that way....I wouldn't want to get too jaded. Tongue

Lets see, my normal commute time to JTree takes just under 2 hours each way (if there's no traffic of course, add on another hour or so if there is traffic) and I do day trips out there all the time. I've done 5 hour drives each way to Yosemite from LA for overnight and weekend trips. As long as the climbing is good I'll drive for how ever long it takes or how ever far away it is.

1/2 of driving to a handful of places with perfect rock and no crowds. You have to love Montana. I just wish the temperature would find its was to the right side of 0 so we could think about climbing again.

One day of climbing:
I would drive to Lions Head which is about 3.5 hours from my house, getting up at 6 am is a given,

Two days of climbing:
I would drive to Bon Echo early on Saturday morning so I can get solid day and a half of climbing. I would also drive to Gunks, usually I leave friday, in the afternoon, drive up to 7 maybe 8 hours just to climb all day saturday and Sunday till 3-4 pm.

Tree (four) days of climbing:
I would drive to RRG for 10 hours just to have 2 or 3 solid days on the rock.

Week of climbing (or more ): I would be willing to drive for 13 hours, that's how long it took me to get to NH first time I drove there.

I find it nice to go climbing with people who can drive stick, that also extands the distance to the crag.

FYI Charley, you have 2 the same picks in your profile.

Generally, I don't drive more than 2 hrs one way for a day trip. My favorite places are a little less than that.

3-5 hours one way for a weekend/long weekend trip.

More for 4 days plus, give or take.

I have driven 1 1/2 hours with a 45 min hike for a one day trip. good granite rock is worth it. I love Colorado Springs cause i have good rock all around within 2 hours. I would drive around 10 hours both ways for a good weekend trip.

whoo! 17 hours? that's getting into plane trip territory.

daytrips I'm willing to put in 2-3 hours. if I get a really early start and am jonesing, 4 would be the top end.

weekend trips I'll drive up to six hours, but it'd be something like leaving Friday, camping, and then getting two days before driving back late Sunday.

I really don't get too many week-long vacations, much less climbing vacations. I'll have to remedy that soon...I'd probably put in 12 hours each way for four days of climbing. any longer than that and I'm flying to Thailand or something.

9 hrs. for a 6 pitch climb and then back home. I wouldn't do it for just one day again unless I really get the urge for multi-pitch. Actually I always have the urge but gas costs too much.

I have the choice of one crag within a 4 minute drive, several fine crags within a 7 minute drive. 30 minutes of driving I have the choice of tons of cool places. Same applies for ice and alpine Pirate

I love Banff.

More limestone choss

Even more limestone choss, with a bit of quartzite choss mixed in.<insert devil here>

The last stement is the only selling feature.

That being said, longest i've done is 1000km for two days climbing... 300 km for one days, though I spent the night. 110 km for a day trip.

6 hours to the gunks from dc for the weekend? No problem. 8 hours to the red river george, KY for the weekend? We'll see...I just have to check the weather. (new to climbing, but have regularly headed out to VT after work on Friday--a 9 hour drive to arrive around 4am, sleep in car--for weekend skiing...climbing is becoming the same)

Lots of choss but there are also alot of quality climbs around. Guides rock is not choss, tunnel area has some solid rock on the sport climbs, places like Grassi and EEOR are not choss, Lake Louise...I can keep going. Hey, at least I don't have to drive for an hour and a half to get to the "choss" Tongue LMAO hahahaha Pirate

When I used to live in Iowa I had to drive at least 2.5 hours for any real rock. The farthest I went was a 7 hour drive for a weekend. I probably wouldn't drive that far again for just a regular weekend, maybe an extended one. I technically drove for two days for two days of climbing, but I was checking schools. I drove for about 12 hours for five days of climbing. Currently living in Boston I have decent crags that are from 15 minutes biking to 15 minutes driving. I usually drive 2.5 hours to Rumney or N. Conway. I have travelled as far as 4 hours to the Gunks for a weekend. I Probably wouldn't travel more than 6 hours for a weekend.

I'd say my rate is probably about an hour per day till about three days and then it's a bit longer. 6 hours for 4 days, 12 hours for 5 days. If I've gotta drive longer than that I'd just take a plane and rent a car.

I'm 3hrs from the Red, 5ish from the New, and 5ish to Seneca. Of those, the Red is the only one I have done and would do for a day trip. Of course, the longer the trip, the farther I'm willing to travel.

Also, the time of year has to be taken into account. When the days are real short, like now, then day trips to the Red become a little more unreasonable. At least to me they do.

I've wondered about how far people drive to get outside for a while, because it's something I struggle with, both financially and morally. In college I used to drive 2-3 hours each way to go hiking for the day, and once drove 50 hours (nonstop) for a week-long trip (with a big group).

Now, though, I can't seem to justify burning that much gas for hardly anything. It's too expensive, and I think we need to start taking personal responsibility for our ecological and political problems. I've been shocked by some of the answers here, and I'm similarly shocked by how boastful people are about their driving feats.

I live in LA, but I try not to go out to J-Tree (150 miles) for less than a weekend. I'll do longer drives (Yosemite) if I have a long weekend, but even then I feel like 6 hours is the upper limit. Depends on how many people I'm splitting gas with, of course. Midweek, I make do with soccer and some bouldering.

I used to live in Bend, OR, where you could have all the skiing and climbing you could want, year round, in a 30-minute drive, and I'd get out 3 days a week or more. When I moved down here, I knew I wouldn't be close to climbing, so I decided to focus on other things (like meaningful employment, which didn't exist in Bend).

sport: 15min to BCC, 1 1/2 hrs to Maple. AF can be found between the two. in the summer, about 1hr to the uinta's.

trad: 20min to LCC, or a 4hr hike to my Lone Peak gear stash.

ice: 20min to LCC, 90min to Maple, 8 hrs to Cody

aid: 20 min to LCC, 14 hrs to the Valley (if tioga pass is open, 20 if not)

mostly.
