Hate to burst you bubble, but based on number of copies sold and subscription base, Urban Climber and Climbing together far outdistance Alpinist. On a side note, as someone that sticks only to the various forms of rock climbing and doesn't do any moutaineering or alpinism, Alpinist only has one relevent article to me in any mag, granted it's an amazing one, but not worth the cost.

I'm pretty sure Notch wasn't referring specificallly to circulation numbers.
I agree with you though regarding relevant articles in Alipinist. It's a great magazine to browse through but I can't justify buying it.
As for Climbing and Urban Climber magazines.......

I'm glad people think that the alpinist isn't relevant to their climbing because that menas there will be plenty of sweet awe inspiring places to climb where i don't have to worry about seeing goober ah-oles everywhere. I have to dream to stay motivated and khadickedja ads don't do it for me. Thesenga should soak the whole ordeal in white gas and light it.

So, by not climbing high altitude mega insanity routes that makes a person a goober ah-ole? There's a reason why it's called the Alpinist, IT'S ALPNISM not just rock climbing. Do what ya like, and don't crap on people for doing what they like.

When these mags start publishing stories about the rest of us and the areas we travel to, more targeting real climbing instead of showing sic sends by "the best", then I'll just finger through them at the mag rack and keep the money for more gear. I question why I even bought them in the past, and yes ... I have a small library of climbing and urban climber. At first, it was to say "Some day, I'll do that", but when many, many days pass and not much improvement ... well, the rest you can fill in.
Pictures are nice tho ...

any thing associated with urban climber is so far beyond gay that it isn't even funny. climbing ought to fit right in perfectly when they team up. i wonder how many 'articles' will have more quotes from joe kinder crying like a pu$$y about not becoming a millionaire from climbing. yawn.

what about rock and ice.. is that even still around?? i used to read that, had a subscription a few years back... liked it, although i could never do any of the routes etc. they talked about... but i was 14 at the time.. and couldn't even drive.. i don't really remember much about it, except i liked the pictures...
..whats people's opinions on it?

Even though the alpinist can't be touted as a choice for a strictly "rock climbing" rag it does show how good a magazine can truely be
ie: lack of superfelous advertising, quality writing, beautiful picture spreads and layout, and sweet format (re. BIG PAGES).
There is hope that someone will put out a "core" oriented climbing rag but who can surmize when it will appear.....
snowboarding being another sport i enjoy is flooded with shittttttyyy mags and i mean that in the most literal sense possible (i wouldnt wipe my posterior with some of the rags related to the sport) but out of the oozing morass that is mainstream journalism came THE SNOWBOARD JOURNAL check it out on the newstand if u can find it.... true journalism, awesome photos, sweet terrain, not many big names, whered the ads go?... and on and on.

so you guys know that magazines aren't supported in the least by the measly earnings from subscriptions right? you all bitch about ads but when you get down to it. ads are the only thing bringing you a magazine at all.

I would think there would be some consensus that clearly Alpinist is by far the classier rag
....so here we go....another iteration of identity for Climbing Magazine.
We'll see
Rock and Ice seems to have refreshed its layout and editorial approach.....trying to strike a balance between the populist reader......and those of a bit more cultivated sensibilities.
From the looks of Urban Climber....i can only second what the previous commenter had to say about the rag being a leader in Fortress watch ads
.....it hardly looks encouraging

I understand that advertisements make magazines run financially. There seems to be so few articles in Urban Climber and Climbing, and filled almost cover to cover with ads.
Alpinist does make most of its money through subscriptions and sales as opposed to ads, that's why they have fewer ads.
I have nothing against either magazine, but the articles in Alpinist are far better written than any other magazine. You dont have to be into Alpine climbing to notice that, or you dont even need to know your homonyms either.
I still read both and flip through the pages to look at the pictures of both, but I just dont really look forward to getting a new Climbing or UC mag.
And Alpinist may be a more niche market, which explains why they are not as high circulating as the others. Or, it could be that they only have four issues a year, versus the others putting out one mag (of much lesser quality IMHO) about every month.
But I dont really care what anyone else likes to read. So whatever your favorite is, enjoy!

I fully understand the selling of advertsing space is how the mags make their dough. Thus the classier mags tend to have less ads and therefore higher cover prices and subscription rates.... a sacrifice i am willing to make. But there does not seem to be in my mind, im sure others can agree with this, a correlation between the number of adds and the number of pages of articles and pictures, or quality of writers. - The magazine with tons of adds does not have more content.... wich isnt a good tradeoff.
