I am a serious climber for over three years. I have onsighted a 5.10B, and have toproped a 5.11A. All of these were in a gym, but the owners say I am a natural. I am really just wondering if I have a chance of maybe getting sponsored with some shoes or even a chalkbag. What do you guys think?

I am CEO of Sweetchuck ManThong International. If you would be willing to climb in my exclusive ManThong (and nothing else of course) I'd be happy to throw in my old chalk bag and some shoes maybe (what size are you and do you have any bowling alley spray?). You can be like Sharma in a ManThong!

I am being serious here. I asked a simple question, there is no reason to not give me an answer. The gym guys really said I am good, and my mom doesn't want to buy me new gear because it is expensive. So real answers only please.

Given the grades of climbing you can do after 3 years of climbing, you ONLY have hopes of "recognition" and sponsorship if you are under the age of 10 years old. 11yo might still work, but 10yo would be better... If that is the case, and if you keep improving about one number grade a year, you will have a good chance of getting recognized in couple years. Otherwise, sorry, but your climbing is not that impressive. You will have a better chance of geting the gear you need if you get a part-time job and save money. Meanwhile, find out if there is a youth climbing team anywhere near you, and if your Mom would be willing to drive you to some bouldering competitions. And climb on.

All joking aside. Gabe, most people who are sponsor bound will send those grades outside in their first month or so. That is unless you're 4 years old. Keep up the good work though!

I understand your concern to not want to drop a lot of kizzash on climbing equipment. Think about it like this: you characterize sponsorship as 'recognition'. That is not what sponsorship is about, really. Companies who sponsor athletes do so for a variety of reasons: - To increase their visibility within the climbing community - To associate themselves with elite athletes obtaining good competitive results so that other climbers will think "... I can climb like Beth or Tommy if I were La Sportivas..." - As a 'goodwill' gesture towards the climbing community; to 'hook a brotha up', as they might say In some sports, such as bicycle racing, the last reason is the primary motivation for sponsorship at the amateur level (in my opinion). The other motivations, i.e. association with athletes who will present a good image for the company/increase visibility, are the likely motivation for sponsorship in a sport like climbing. It is a business decision for the companies. The last reason (hooking a brother up) surely comes into play to some extent, too, but I don't think that gets you free stuff; only discounts. So ask yourself this: what kind of climber do you have to be in order for it to be a good business decision for someone to sponsor you? The answer is probably being a serious climber, competing on at least the regional level, getting good results at said competitions, and showing promise of improving. That, and being a good representative/emissary for a company (i.e. not a jerk). Sounds like you're improving quickly, and showing promise. Kudos to you. If being sponsored is a goal of yours (some people will come on here and hate all over that as a goal, but I don't think it is a bad one, necessarily, as long as you realize that it is only a by-product of the larger goal of being an elite competitive climber), get yourself to some competitions, start climbing with those who are more experienced than you, learn, and improve. Also, realize that living the lifestyle of the recreational athlete isn't cheap if you want the nice equipment. For the time being, scrounge for sales, get shoes resoled, and don't buy the most bling bling stuff.

O.K. If you're talking "old skool" Yosemite type ratings, then maybe you are pretty good. You still have to excel at outdoor climbing though because gym climbing just isn't that photogenic and it is really hard to objectively evaluate your skillz on problems that are re-set every couple of months. Also, if you're serious about getting answers on this forum don't get angry because you're just going to get buried in crap. Just ignore people that are having fun at your expense and move on with your life .

And those ratings arent from the gym, they are from outside. Dont plan on getting any of your own for awhile man. 3 years and only 5.10?

Davey wrote: thomasribiere wrote: Are you from Nigeria? HAHAHA now that is funny That aint funny man.... ive heard that nigeria is the new hot spot for sick climbers:) Ok on topic now.... You definately need to be getting outdoors and climbing there if you ever want to get sponsored, unless you are a florida gym comp climber that regularly flashes V8 and 5.13 on the rare occasion that you get outside. If you dont go outside then you are not a good prospect for a company. If you are wanting a sponsorship then you need to be in the climbing publics eye majorly so that people look up to you and respect you otherwise you need to be sending 13s and v10+. One climber I can point out is chris sierzant.... he just climbed his first 5.14. now in respect to other professional climbers that isnt all that high (dave graham, yuji hirayama, and many others can onsight at this level) but chris owns a gym here in Atlanta and has a lot of the younger generation looking at him for guidance, therefore he is a good idea for companies to sponsor.

Right there Gabe. Right there. That's as good as it gets. Oh, Ps... I've also been climbing for about that long (plus about a year) and I've been climbing at the 5.10/5.11 level indoors and outdoors for a while now. No one clambers to give me free stuff... Hope you don't take the flame job too bad, but I speak fluent street and from my translation of your original post, sounds like you said "Please flame me, I'm new here and would like to be initiated." Have fun in the gym, but try things outside when winter is over. It's much more fun and very different. hosh.

Seriously, I got a 5.10 outside my first time at a crag, and 5.11 after my third.Only been 6 times. Now I am kinda stuck, but thats another story. I am not trying to discourage you, but the fact is that there are thousands out there better than both you and me combined that would be better canidates for sponsership. Dream Big Kane

I thought climbers were supposed to be strong both physically and emotionally but I am disappointed to see a Gym Rat is begging like a dog asking for food. If I was a doorman working in one of these companies, I would not even let you park in the parking lot. Get you’re a** back on that rock start climbing you rat.

This is what I like to see. The warm, welcoming side of RC.com...makes me all tingly inside. So the kid's gotten some encouragement and fels good about himself... whyinthehell do guys need to piss on his parade. Naive question? Yes. Worthy of a flame? Sure. Needs two pages of abuse? Only if you think picking on blind, three-legged dogs is hilarious. The truth is that TR'n 5.11 ain't so bad (especially if you're young) but, as in all things, you have to be in the top .5 percentile to get any sort of recognition and there are kids out there pushing the 5.14s...keep working

Gabe, You are my hero. Your listed RC.com climbs to date (K2's Abruzzi, Eiger's N. Face) are the paragon of style -- don't downplay your ability in the gym. The action and the drama in your routes are so amazing -- something of a cliffhanger, I'd have to say. You have such a striking resemblance to Sly Stallone. You get to hang out with big time actors like John Lithgow and Michael Rooker. You've climbed with the big guns -- Wolfgang Gullich and Ron Kauk. You should think about working in Hollywood, it might even result in a trip to the Academy Awards. I love those action shots in Rocky Mountain National Park -- majestic spires that seem quite reminiscent of Italy's Dolomites. Could you tell me which part of RMNP those were from? I've hiked all over RMNP and only seem to find granite. That bolt gun of yours is totally cool. I use a Bosch, which seems so slow and heavy by comparison. And your clothing seems so resistant to cold temperatures and freezing water -- where did you get them? Finally, I find it challenging to believe that you really need to be sponsored for such trivial items like shoes or chalk bags. Rumor has it that you have suitcases of money to burn, and that it costs a fortune to heat your place. Anyway, best of wishes with the climbing career. I hope the road for you isn't too rocky.

WOW, I onsight 5.11's sport and I am working on 5.12's right now. I can almost climb 5.10 in trad. ALL outside. This was after 3 years of climbing and I am only getting better. I will most likely not get sponsored and to be honest, YOU ARE NOT EVEN NEARLY GOOD ENOUGH TO GET SPONSERED.

How old are you? Most strong people with natural ability can send 5.11 outside within the first month or two. 5.11 is were climbing STARTS to get technical. So if you want to get good, get some books and learn about dynamic movements, flagging, drop knees, ect. And start working on crimp strength if you havn't already. If you really wanted to get sponsered you're WAY behind for 3 years of climbing.

Oh wait... you WERE serious. You're that guy on the cover of Climbing Mag this month. Now that we know you're mentally and physically challenged, you SHOULD be sponsored for your great achievements. No matter what anybody on here says, you really are special Gabe, just like your moms says. Don't get discouraged.

Question: how do I get recognition? Answer: die in a noob climbing accident - you'll be on the 5 o'clock news fo-sho. All your equipment related needs will be solved at that point.

Dude we aren't ''hating on you'', we are just telling you the truth. That is what you asked and we told you. Many people who have answered your question are stronger climber then you are. Try to get into climbing competition and maybe if you are in the top 10, you will get sponsered. Really you don't ask them, they ask you if you want to be sponsered and you aren't strong enough to even ask. That is the simple truth. Kevin

As funny as GabeW is ("buttdrain?" Will I owe you royalties if I use that?), he wasn't even trying. But why waste energy or pride? Y'alls are too easy. How many of you had to run your finger along the words and mouth them while you read before falling into his branch and pine-needle covered hole in the forest floor and then lambasting him? Come on, give me power_tie. That guy is slightly more subtle.

Congratulations on failing your first test. If you were being considered for sponsorship, you could kiss that goodbye. Any company that was possibly looking at you to be their spokesman would look the other way when they saw how you respond to negative criticism. I know that people are not being nice to you in this post. But truth is, you're not an amazing climber judging by your own admission of your "exploits". You should expect negative comments if you're looking to put yourself in the public arena as an icon. Your personality isn't grade "A" either. If your had a sterling personality, then companies would consider you for sponsorship. But what would I know, I've only held several major sponsors as a surfer (including JC Hawaii, DaKine, DSO, Globe shoes, Ezekiel clothing, etc...) I don't know that much about sponsorship... I don't know of any climbers who are sponsored for climbing in a gym, no matter how hard they're pulling on plastic. I give you credit for your zeal, but it's not according to knowledge, as it were. Take some time, grow up a little, gain some more experience and a little tact, then try again. hosh.

But as you said, who needs to exercise skill and subtlety when you have putzes who fall for "Gabe's" pathetic level of troll crap? It's also possible that Gabe was doing what is called "hookless trolling." That's when you make a troll intentionally bad and obvious, just to see who is clueless enough to get hooked by it anyway. That's a legitimate, but often derided, trolling technique used around here quite a lot. As I've mentioned in previous posts, my offer stands to up-and-coming trolls everywhere. You're welcome to contact me if you would ever like any mentoring or advice.

In reply to: I'm just glad it wasn't the man-thong issue. Yes I agree it would have been better had I successfully googled a pic of a sweaty fat kid in a thong, liebacking up a crack with his bitch tit stuffed in said crack, taking a rest, chalking up one hand, adjusting his thong with the other, all with that prized winning stupid look on his face... I mean, this is the friggin internet for pete sake. If I need a pic of a sweaty fat kid in a thong, liebacking up a crack with his bitch tit stuffed in said crack, taking a rest, chalking up one hand, adjusting his thong with the other, all with that prized winning stupid look on his face, then damn it, I should be able to get my hands on that pic, some how, some way... [sigh...] The limitations of the internet severely disappoint me sometimes.

You know the funny part about all this gabe, some poor schmuck is gonna stumble along even after reading all this, and STILL think you're actually serious... are they actually that dumb, or are they just playing stupid for the sake of keeping your lame trolls going to make you think you've accomplishing making innocent people look/feel stupid? Good trolls are funny, but you don't know what you're doing, you set the hook way too fast, you need to put in the time for people to get to know you and actually convince them that you're that retarded and THEN set the hook and take em for a ride. Now change handles and try again, use your head a little this time.

Gabe, How old are you? Do you real want to get recognized, then find a local USAC comp in your area, and come compete with your areas best youth climbers. That will give you a good idea what your skill level really is compared to others in your age catagory. Info can be found at www.usaclimbing.net

In reply to: Are you two by any chance bum chums? Now Gabe, the only one I have a relationship with that requires sticking objects in bums is your mom. Hell I even let her toss my salad a little bit. See it's all about ME NOW BITCH! Why do you think your mom doesn't want to buy you new gear? Because she spends all her money on ME! See, when you climb at MY level, you need tons of specialized gear specific for the HARD CORE climbing that I do. It's just like that, that's how I ROLL BITCH. So in you mom's mind, she's like "5.11c or 5.11d? Gabe Walker or BBENTLEY? Gabe WHO? 5.11c WHO? First I stole all your sponsors, then I stole your mom. That's right, she's driving ME around to all the cool crags in town and I'm totally just OWNING these hardcore climbs. You're finished Gabe Walker, FIN`E, CAPUT. I'll ALWAYS be one step ahead of you. That's what separates the TRUE CHAMPIONS from the losers who only climb 5.11c.

I honestly have no reply to you. Your rambling rant has not in anyway bothered me, except that by reading it I have wasted a good two minutes of my life trying to comprehend what the hell you are saying, and it actually has made me dumber. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

In reply to: except that by reading it I have wasted a good two minutes of my life WOW!!!! It took you a whole 2 minutes to read that? You ARE retarded, aren’t you? I don't think there's a possibility any way shape or form of you being any dumber than you already are. So don't blame your retarded ness on me, it's not my fault you were born with fetal alcohol syndrome and have a 2-inch penis.

Assuming you got a girlfriend maybe she can pat you on the ass for some recognition. If not try your Mom. Moms are always good for making their kids feel better.

Maybe a bolt gun that automatically shoots bolts in to the wall? cuz, yah know, that is the first thing sponsor give their athletes

I figure that now would be a good time to include this information. I work with behaviorally "challenged" youth. One tactic that works rather well with them is when they're seeking negative attention, is to utilize "planned ignoring". They simply don't get the results they're looking for and usually resort to other, appropriate means of seeking attention. Another thing that often works is offering positive attention before they begin to seek after negative attention. It's called "front loading". We could ignore this post and maybe Gabe will go away. If not, then I've created a thread here: http://www.rockclimbing.com/...ost=1549541;#1549541 Please feel free to add to the "shrine to Gabe Walker" hosh.

Oh yeah, can you explain to me how a tyrolean works again? I wasn't quite clear on that, and you're obviously the reisd-ent exprerd on tings clim-eing.....oh sorry I forgot how to speak fucking english; can you give me a lesson in that, too? So the OP has no idea what sponsored climbers ....well, climb at. Fun to flame, of course, but maybe if he pushes himself he'll get a free pair of shoes someday. If you want to be sponsored, work on climbing...not how to market yourself.

What you are saying about the ratings inside cannot be compared to outside, its totally different, inside all the holds are marked, beta is much easier. If you want harder gym ratings then outside, go climb my routes inmy my gym, sandbagged some say. But it just cant be compared to outside climbing, there are many factors involved and its like comparing apples to oranges.

Yo, If i was you I would try to find a local climbing team around you, join the team do good in climbing comps. Then once you do good start e-mailing climbing companies and just be like: Im on a team climbing....what ever lvl you climb at the time, and say you are in comps. that works for the most part. Also dont go for the big climbing comps. start small local shops....clothing....anything, just get your name out there. and never forget CLIMB FOR YOURSELF ADN NO ONE ELS. peace bro. have fun

Dude I was doing that in like my 5th visit to the gym, and now I walk up them like they are nothing. Did I mention, I have only been climbing for about a year too. Your best bet is to get into some comps and get to know some of the higher ups in climbing gear companies(Maybe even the owner). But even with recognition dont expect too much free gear, only the best get that. But if you start climbing above sport 5.14c, then maybe you will get lucky. I know one guy at my gym that climbs 5.13d, and he still has not been sponsored. Keep that in mind.

Hey everybody. So I'm still at it. I'm still not sponsored, yet... but I have been crushing everything in sight. I actually did send a couple emails to various companies (prana, la sportiva), but I didn't get a reply. Thats okay though, they'll be knocking on my door and lining up to give me gear. CLIMB HARD FRIENDS!

The funniest part about this isn't the troll... it's the fact that it got resurrected by someone apparently with a serious response. Of some sort. Obviously not totally in english.

You are what they call a dime for a dozen my friend. I know plenty of climbers, or as I sometimes call them, heros, that do and have done some amazing things out here in Yosemite. And guess what? Theres no marching band at the bottom cheering them on. There's no free gear for endorsements. Usually, there's only an icechest full of icy beer waiting at the bottom in a bear box. It's a pipe dream bro.

Yosemite Climbing Gym? I'm talking about Y.N.P not yosfit (http://www.yosfit.com/) Apparently you have never climbed in Yosemite Nat'l park or you're tying to start fruitless debate. Anyhow, many of us know your statement is false.

It's a pipe dream bro. Gabe, ignore this moron. He sounds like a total n00b. He's a poser, not a real climber like you. He can't even accurately quote "First Ascent." Have you gotten any big name sponsors yet? Like North Face? I haven't heard from you in a while and hope your climbing career is moving forward. Please keep us updated!!!

Come on, people! Mr. Bourne has resurrected Gabe for us. We at least owe him the dignity of a response. Mr. Bourne, I'm glad that you have an experience of climbing. I assume that you posted here because you want to continue having more experiences of climbing. Well, you're off to a good start. Comfortable shoes are a necessity. I commend you for wanting to purchase the new one which is released in the market. That should help your climbing substantially. Please check back if you have any questions or are looking for a climbing partner. You'll find that most people on rc.com are helpful, informative, and very knowledgeable. I wish you the best in your future experiences of climbing and in your recovery. Serenity, my brother.

Sounds like the owner of the gym you climb at is blowing some steam up your a**. I started climbing this year and I can lead 5.10a and can TR 5.11a. I only climb on real rock. I don't think this is a huge accomplishment, and certainly wouldn't even begin to think I deserve recognition for it. Sorry to burst your bubble, but I think you should try climbing with fun in mind and not really worry about getting recognition. If you deserve recognition you will get it without trying. BTW: does an onsight on a gym wall count? Your holds are all obvious so is there really a challenge to an onsight?

Maybe you are just climbing those, and got confused about the grade. Anyhow, I think I'm pretty close to getting to talk to a company about sponsoring me. So you obviously have no idea what you are talking about.

Congratulations on the sponsorship :D I use guide books to determine what to climb and I climb in Penitente. Maybe someone on this forum can tell us from experience whether the routes there are under or over rated. However I'm confused as to how anyone could think that climbing on a gym wall, where your holds are brightly colored and right in your face, could possibly be harder then climbing on real rock. You can't even find holds that imitate the microscopic edges you trust your weight to on a 5.11. Once again,.. have you ever climbed on real rock? BTW: what is the name of your gym? I would love to take a look at what they consider 5.11...

is this a serious question? i have been climbing for 5 months and onsighted a 5.9 not in a gym. and am not even slightly close to thinking about sponsership. you have to understand a 5.11 outdoors even wont get u very far.....bump that grade out a few grades, move outside and then start thinking about some free shoes

What do you guys think? no actually this is me being serious cuz when you move out of the gym and go out and try some real rock (5.11a) chances are pretty good you will shit yourself. I'm just trying to help a brother out. also if you pay for shipping I'll sponsor you a chalkbag!

Obvious Troll is pretty obvious, but i figured I'd chime in anyway because n00bs are probably clicking this thread: If by the first 60 days of whatever sport it is you've taken up you haven't had someone say something along the lines of "I don't think i've ever seen anyone get so good so fast and I've been doing [insert sport here] for quite awhile.", then you're not a natural. Good luck, have fun, whatever-- just keep in mind that at the very most you'll be a little bit better than your peers provided you work at it.

Hey buddy don't concern yourself so much. Based on what you said you aren't exactly a prodigy. I have only been climbing 1.5 years and have sport climbed outside twice and have already onsighted a 12b hanging bolts. Don't worry so much about being sponsored just climb for the enjoyment of it.

Honestly, it's not hard to figure out. If you really want recognition, get footage of yourself redpointing 14c or above, and post it all over the internet. Most people who have climbed at that level, and have video of it, are well-known and/or professional climbers. Most people who have climbed that level, are not professional or well-known, and have video of it, become well-known. Sponsors will seek you, not the other way around. If you have to seek out the sponsors, you're doing it wrong. This goes for ANY SPORT where income is sponsor-based (not to mention there is no money in these types of sports unless you're one of the top 5). You know how many sponsor-me tapes skateboard companies get everyday from kids all over the country?! About 95% of those videos get thrown out and dismissed. Climb for FUN, and in the end, you'll be exactly where you want to be.

If you were such a natural back then, why don't you have a sponsor yet? Do you really think you are better than the people that are sponsored? If so go to competitions and see, maybe that will put you into the real light. Being a professional athlete is not as easy as your TV makes it out to be. Also getting there is even harder.

This perspective might help... Ive been climbing for 7 months and I lead up to 5.11d outdoor and comfortably on site anything in the 5.10 range. Including joshua tree ratings. I am nowhere close to getting sponsored. But if you want to be sponsored for gym climbing start doing competitions. If you want to be sponsored for the outdoors you'd better start climbing outdoors. I am maybe a 5.8 climber indoor but when I get outside the game changes.

It's not too difficult to get some sort of discount, if you are some sort of instructor. For instance, a Google search for "pro discount black diamond" brought me to this page: http://blackdiamondequipment.com/en/pro-requirements.html which basically says that if you're a certified guide and can show that you're getting paid to guide, or you teach that kind of stuff full time, or you're on the ski patrol, or are part of a big search and rescue group that's all buying stuff, then you can get some sort of discount. To get stuff for free, though, the requirements are generally going to be even more stringent. For instance, instead of showing two paystubs, you might have to provide business details of how many thousands of people are going to be seeing you wearing the equipment, or collections of newspaper articles, or contests/competitions regularly won, or something else that really shows how awesome you are and how many people will be looking up to you. Or get really friendly with a local manager, or something. Also, the first rule of pro discounts is that, if you're getting one, you don't ever tell anyone what sort of discount you're getting, or you won't ever get a discount again and the company might just stop offering the discount at all. So I can tell you that pro discounts do exist, and for some of the companies that get asked about pro discounts a lot (like Black Diamond) they've made some of the requirements more readily accessible, but otherwise nobody can really tell you about pro discounts, you have to go search them out for yourself.
