Thank you for your kind words, all! Believe me when I tell you it was with fear and trepidation that I reported my stupidity here. I am thankful that you don't consider me a total wanker! I am pleased to report that the Wall Flower was attached to my pig, not Tom's, and was ceremoniously cremated on the summit. Not one turd fell to earth! Please click here to start the PHOTO ESSAY that shows how I dropped Tom's pig.

After reading the WHOLE story, i think i pretty much under-stood everyting. Except for some of the knots and AID terms. Not bad for someone who has bearly done a single pitch follow, eh? Pride

The Amazing Flying Whale had all the Valley Giant cams in it. And it was Amazing, in that it suffered almost no damage at all. It was hung up in the tree. All the big cams were intact, with one #12 bent a bit, but that was it. The Whale grabbed the trees, but the Pig cratered hard: exploded water and clam chowder. The 5-gallon bucket full of avocados, oranges and grapefruit also exploded. My sleeping bag, on a tag line, was also untouched. My shaving kit's contents were blasted with toothpaste, but I shaved the day I recovered the cratered pig. For On The Wall, use the docking tether, per PTPP, and don't keep the static line tied in. PTPP suffered a minor lapse, leading to the cratering. His error is not a condemnation of the system, only a heads-up that when on the wall you have to be heads-up (duh). Statistically, Dr. Piton was well ahead of the numbers when he made the minor mistake. And it was minor, because his philosophy of building redunancy into every system worked: we had another pig full of food and water. [ This Message was edited by: apollodorus on 2002-10-26 00:42 ]

A dropped pig and a lost cam...at least you are out there. I got a funny vision of dropping the "waste case"and watching a weeks worth of solid waste splatter after falling 1000', That would be a great twist. Thanks for the story, better to learn from your mistakes than make my own!!

In reply to: "Thanks for the story, better to learn from your mistakes than make my own!!" Now there is a man who "gets it!" Like my dad always said to me, "don't do as I do, do as I say."

"Whoops" about sums it up, mate! Yeah, the cams looked a little the worse for wear - plus plenty of others. Tom put in yeoman service over the winter repairing all my bashed cams - I'm fortunate to have a partner who is not only a great engineer, but a helluva fine machinist, too.
In reply to: Spoken with great concern: "Uh, dude - some of your gear looks pretty ghetto....." Arrrrrrr!!! Had a couple beers in the Meadows yesterday with your reprobate brother, Ammon. Life is good! The wall is filling up with people. Weather's superb. I'm up on Gulf Stream for a couple weeks. [yikes, it looks harrrrrrrrrd......]

In reply to: Had a couple beers in the Meadows yesterday with your reprobate brother, Ammon. Pete, What do you mean by this comment? (reprobate) Do you mean I rejected you when I saw you in the Valley? Hey, you asked me for a beer. I told you "I don't want your scurvy ridden lips on my beer". BUT, I gave you a fresh one. You made a sexual comment to one of my buddy's girlfriend. I told you: "That crap is NOT exceptible".... and that "next time there won't be a warning, just a lot of pain". You applogized and thanked me for letting you know that you were "out of line". Hey, I accept you for who you are. BUT, that doesn't mean I have to stand by and watch you drool all over my buddy's 17 year old girlfriend. I'm just trying to help you remember what really happened. I know what happens to one's mind after so many days of soloing on the Big Stone. Cheers, Ammon

I think Pete was calling Gabe immoral. Pretty funny coming from a middle aged man with a weakness for underage girls, eh?

That does make you wonder... Anyway, Pig=Haul bag. I've heard lots of different stories about why it is called a pig, it looks like a pig, it's colored like a pig (some), and I've heard at one point they were made out of pig skin and there are probably others. I don't know which one is exactly true but I speculate it would be a little combination of all. John-Paul

Always down to go to shows, hence my winter climbing consistes of JTree from Monday thru Thursday (to miss the crowds), how for the weekends (to catch some shows), repeat all winter.
