Here's something I've always wondered about, and finally thought I'd ask. Behind the sarcasm is a sincere interest in the true answer and the motivations behind: ACCOUNT USERNAMES!!! Why the password-like, goofy, oftern unreadable and unpronounceable, attempted (mostly failed) pseudo-cool heiroglyphics for usernames? Why not just straightforwardly state who you are? Some do. Most don't.

Most don't. There is more to the inter-tubes then this site... I think most folks carry whatever username from one site to the others and even to non-climbing sites... and some might stem from the days where you could only have 6-8 characters for a username pre 99 usually. Or there is this whole web 2.0 deal that's going on these days. Pick a word, remove vowels and tada! ! so... ya... ::shrugs::

There are whackos on the internet harris. If you cross them they will track you down and make you submit. You just remember that the next time you drop your soap in the community shower. Cheers DMT

BTW, did you know harris was the name of the reporter Hunter S Thompson slipped a mickie to so he could steal his press credentials to get on Nixon's reelection plane in 72? Huh? Didjya know that???? Nixon ran into 'harris' in the mens roof for a quick piss (Nixon was no homo) and of course Thompson had to troll him. Thus the famous, 'what about the doomed?' speech by Thompson and the even more famous reply from Nixon, immoralized in Where the Buffalo Roam: Nixon said, "Come here harris. Let me tell you something. FUCK.... THE DOOMED!" And out the restroom door he went. Ciao DMT

Most don't. I use this name firstly because it's not some goofy-ass pseudo-cool horseshit, and secondly because it's a combination that is rarely taken within username lists. If anyone's interested in the origins, it's my initials, followed by lucky number, followed by year of birth. As for who I'm hiding from, mostly uber-hard sportards who will mercilessly ridicule me for not being able to pull .13s.

In only the short time since this post started, your answers have enlightened me. Thank you. My curiosity is satisfied, but keep the responses coming. Remember this: My question is serious, but offered in a spirit of good cheer and humor. You're all my fellow climbers. I feel a connection to all. Happy Holidays.

Mine is my email log in, a left over from medical school email, and now here. I acutally started an account with more a more straight forward name (I think my dog's name or something) but I quickly forgot what it was or what the password was so I decided to keep email and here the same.

I've had the unfortunate experience of being internet-stalked, to the point that people were posting up my picture, place of employment, boss's contact information, and so on, with the express intent that people would harass my boss about something I said on the fucking internet that they didn't like. I don't go out of my way to give out any personally identifying information on the internet since then.

People know who I am. I used my full name for years, then dropped back to my first name once I became a certified grown-up. But a lot of people here know my first name, where I live, my face (sorry) and a few even know what I do, so it's not hard to find me or believe that I'm real. Lifers like me also answer to our screen names IRL anyway.

I never had a nickname growing up. All my friends had nicknames,..."Squibber", "Mooch", "PJ", "TJ", "AJ", "Mouth", "Littledick"... I was just Chad. It's not even short for anything. Just four little letters. So my first day signing up here I thought about just using the only identity I had ever known, but I had just finished "Intard-web for Dummies" and rule #378 "The Intardweb is the only place where it is acceptable to give yourself a really cool nickname." That really resonated with me. It was the one thing I had always wanted, my own nickname! And here i was being told it was finally acceptable to do so. So I seized the opportunity! And the rest is RC.n00b history. Plus "Chad" was already taken.
