Hiker / Visitor Alerts and Current Conditions

Fire on Rattlesnake Mountain - Day 4. Rain showers and high humidity
during the night of Friday, 30 May and during the day Saturday,
helped to suppress the widlandfire on Rattlesnake Mountain in Rumney,
NH (the Rattlesnake 08 incident). At the same time, the rain hampered
ground crews by making the rock ledges slippery and dangerous. More
accurate mapping has indicated the size of the fire at about 54 acres.

On Sunday, 1 June, two additional crews from New York and the Midewin
National Tallgrass Prairie in Illinois will join firefighters from
the White Mountain and Green Mountain National Forests and the State
of New Hampshire for the arduous "mop up," rooting any remaining
flames from the layer of duff (dead leaves and pine needles) that
covers the forest floor.

The Incident Commander has released the NH National Guard Blackhawk
helicopter that has assisted with water drops for two days, as well
as a bulldozer from the Maine Forest Service that has been standing
by. The Rumney Fire Department, that has been on scene to protect
houses close to the fire, has also been released, and the temporary
closure of Buffalo Road has been lifted.

The Forest Supervisor-ordered closure of the Rumney Rocks climbing
area and the nearby Rattlesnake Mountain Trail remain in effect. This
information posted 1 June 2008, 0800 hours. We will update as
conditions change.

Forest Service officials ask that anyone with information about the
fire, or who may have been in the area on Wednesday afternoon,
contact Herb Karsten at (603) 536-1315 ext. 4033.

Ruckus Photography? [In reply to]

Hello all

new to the forum here and climbing in general. I am a commercial photographer in Portland Maine and I am interested in expanding my sporting portfolio. If anyone is headed to the Ruckus, how would you feel about a photographer being there? I am trying to see if there is any accepted etiquette at these events. I almost certainly will not be climbing and getting in your way, probably shooting up from the bottom and down from the top if it's possible to get up there under my own power.

Happy to give prints to anyone that lets me take their photo on the rock!

anyone have any comments or suggestions?

thanks

Aaron

I have no problem with this. Your portfolio is quite impressive! There are areas at Rumney where you can get clean shots of climber that are not a bottom up shot. Nobody likes butt shots! I can show you some, but I am also sure that there will be many there that will be more then happy to assist.

Getting to the top of the routes will be an issue in most places. Deadly in some. Most of the climbs end before toping off, so you would have to hang over the top to get shots from the top if you are not climbing. Yet, at places like Waimea and Orange Crush do have great location to catch some action from the ground. Rumney has some very dangerous areas where getting to for shooting can be technical, to say the least.

Any ideas people?

Hey Jammer,

Is the head cound on the first page up do date?

I will probably need some directions as time gets closer. A PM will suffice.

As of now, Tard Farday is a 50/50 for me. My GF may not be able to get the day off. If that is the case, we'll be arriving in the PM.

I'll have to go through the names when I get home today. I updated it a couple of weeks back and there has not been much traffic in this thread since.

Thanks for the reminder.

Aaron, climbers in general are not an egotistical bunch, but I would say you won't have too many objections to getting shots of them. I, for one, have never shied away from a camera Wink.

Welcome, Aaron! I'm sure we can help figure out ways to get you on top for some pics.

Hopefully the burned up background in Rumney won't be too ghoulish for your pics! I hope it won't be too bad!

Aaron, there are two types of climbing photos - those in which the climber is just sort of part of the overall scene, and those in which you can see the climber's face, feel like part of the action.

For the first - these are basically landscape shots, and can be very lovely. It's possible for photographers with a very good eye to take these photos without touching a rope. At their best, they can capture an overall mood.

Of this first type, here's my favorite example:

The second type gets you into the action. It's more of a "sports" type photo. At its best, this photo can be very effective at capturing the effort and perspective of the climber.

Here's are a few examples:
http://www.rockclimbing.com/...ying_high_92735.html
http://www.rockclimbing.com/...l_Fashion_95716.html
http://www.rockclimbing.com/...hant_Rock_95206.html
http://www.rockclimbing.com/...e_de_Maya_95737.html
http://www.rockclimbing.com/...ancy_Free_90994.html

For this second type, you absolutely *must* be on a rope, and often some advanced rigging is required to get the right shot (stilts, extra ropes out to trees, etc).

The other issue you'll have at Rumney is that many of the cliffs are below the treeline, so getting that first type of shot will be a challenge.

Anyway, you're welcome to take shots of me. My ugly mug won't sell any photos, though!

GO

I think it was Epoch who asked on NEClimbs, so I'll ask again here. Do you have any gear at all? I have an extra harness and shoes to bring, if they fit. I'll need to know what size you are. Waist and shoes. We can set you a top rope on climbs and help haul you up to where you need to be, but you'll have to do some work yourself! Wink You mentioned that you will be there just for Sunday??? Any way you can make it both days? That would allow you to move around more. The areas are some what separated by a bit of a hike.

Hell give the guy a Jumar and put him on TR and have him climb the other side of the rope.. French Free A1 !

personally I'd love some shots of me on Social Outcast.. I may not be in 100% shape to get it clean this time of year but a couple bolts at a time should be do-able. Decent from the ground shots to be had

Jake, you have been there since before the beginning ... how could I forget! Blush Please accept my apologies, Jake.

Good Idea about the Jumars. I have a set I can bring, along with a pair of 8 step ladder aider and a pair of Black Diamond Etriers. He'll be all set.

Well, I had my work trip to Manchester all planned for 18-19 June, just perfect for the Ruckus.

Then I checked the mail on Friday to see a notice for jury duty, on June 19th.

Need to see what my options are, but it is very difficult to escape/reschedule superior court jury duty here in Delaware.

Guess you better change me to a maybe, Jammer.

Keeping my fingers crossed though.

I was going to offer up rigging support services if needed as well. I have jumars that live in my suv and some experience with hoisting non-climbing photographers up for shots. I was going to suggest the same - setting a line and letting the photog jug up, though we'd also have to coach him in the down-jugging process as well. Depending on the climb, the amount of people wanting to do it, and the avail of extra bodies a simple 3:1 / 5:1 haul can get him up for shots and someone with experience can control his rope so there is a lessened risk of injury or process failure. Though another simple option is for him to use a gri-gri, a jumar, some etriers and jug up the rope and have descent options already implimented into his system. Depending on his experience, a fireman's belay would be sufficient backup for lowering. I've done this many times to get into position for photos and other stuff.

Food for thought.

Regardless, Aaron, there will be plenty of experienced people there to assist.

Jammer

I dont have any gear whatsoever. If someone can recommend a good kind of cheap-ish climbing shoes I will get those. The rest will have to wait, times are a little tight.

I have a 34/35 waist. Do you need that to know what kind of harness I should be wearing? I assume shorts and T-shirt are OK for the rest of my outfit. and of course the rainbow-striped clown wig. I never climb without THAT.

Sunday is the only day I can make it. Family reunion/grandma memorial on saturday in Bennington. If everything works right, I should get to Rumney around 9AM Sunday and stay until my girlfriend is tired.

thanks to everyone for the positive responses and helping hands. much appreciated.

Does anyone know of any other climbing events in New England coming up?

thanks

Aaron

Hey aaron, and everyone else! havent been really active in this thread for a while, so i was suprised to see so much activity! Aaron, i have a little experience with climbing photography, umars, a grigri and a system that works pretty well, and i'd be happy to help you out. i'm hopefully gonna be at the ruckus all three days, so i'd be more than happy to share my limited knowlage. and if you need an assistant, i'd be more than happy to help.

also on a general note, since this is my first visit to the ruckus, is there anything that i should plan to bring, or just plan to camp for a couple days, and how does one get a partner, or should i just hope to tag along with someone who knows what theyre doing?

thanks for the help!

Al I shall only accept your apology when sent down from the top of Peer Pressure :)

Partners should be easy enough to find.. though if you have an idea of what grades you climb and then look in the guidebook, Mtn project database or RC's database to find routes that are high on your list then people can start matching up with similar interests.

Stuff to camp easily out of your car for a few days. there are multiple stores for food and other stuff within 5 miles including a super giant walmart.

aaron what size feet do you have? Between all of us we should be able to have a spare set of shoes for you to borrow for a day. Someone should also have a harness that will fit also.

my high hopes and dreams wish.. fitness pending though perhaps a weekend of just fun with only a few hard things attempted might be in order
