hi most of you do not know me..

i am erin,
daryn's ex-wife of 10 years and one of his best friends.
we still spoke several times a week.

i know he visited here hourly and was even on here this morning.
i just wanted to let you know that he passed away in Salt lake City this afternoon.
and no
it was not from doing what he loved so very much.
ice climbing or rock.

he went to the ER thinkin he was having a heart attack.
while doing tests they realized it was much more critical.
they started more tests.. he crashed during the process.
there was then 8-9 people working on him and giving him CPR before he passed.
this apparently is pre existing heart condition, something none of us OR him knew about, something
he was born with that he had never had any problems
with until today.

i know he lived, loved, respected, and breathed climbing.
i know he had a great deal of wonderful friendships, partnerships & romances, from here.
we all loved him!!
and again i know he loved all of you.

i love him and he will always be one of my best, best friends...

please let his memory live on in your climbing.

if any questions please feel free to contact me at
erincunninghamsmith@gmail.com

thank you so much for being a part of his world.

Hello Erin, it was our pleasure to have been associated with Daryn or as some of us affectionately called him "stinky". He will definitely be missed around here, he was definitely a colourful character to say the least. Best wishes to you asnd the rest of the family. Do feel free to drop in on another thread in the community campground forum here on this site where folks are also leaving condolence messages.

Unbelievable. This is terribly sad. I felt sick loading this thread, hoping it was him but half thought he was playing some sort of joke on us. He was a treat online and a lovely addition to our aid forum. We planned to climb together in Zion, a wall that would have been a beautiful place to climb and I'm sorry we won't be able to do that.

Thank you for letting us know. Rest in peace, Mr. Fink.

-Kate.

I'm saddened to hear Sty has passed. He held down being himself here and that won't ever be replaced. I never met him in person but one day I expect we'll pull pranks together in whichever place jackasses like he and I end up.

Sty:

We never met. We'd trade e-mails from time to time, banter back and forth on message boards, and managed to disagree on just about every topic possible.

Except climbing. We both loved climbing.

Rock, ice, alpine. Single pitch, multi-pitch, and multi-day adventures.

For two guys who never met, we had a lot in common, and managed to parlay that into a friendship that spanned miles and years.

You were too young to die, brother. 35 year old men should not have heart attacks. If they do, they damn sure shouldn't die from them.

I miss you, my friend. I regret that we never tied into the opposite ends of a 10 millimeter hunk of braided nylon and asked each other to trust our lives to the other.

Damn this world, and damn these circumstances.

I'll meet you in another life, buddy, and we'll climb ice until we reach the sky. After that, we'll drink a couple beers, tell some lies about women and mountains, then do it again the next morning.

Rest in Peace, my friend.

Daryn has ceased to be, he rests in peace, bereft of life, he kicked the bucket, bit the dust, breathed his last, gone to the big glass house in the sky, hopped the rail to the pine box palace, and gone to meet the Great Head of Scary Hook Placements in the sky.

And I guess that we’re all thinking how sad it is that a man of such talent, of such unusual intelligence, a man who stood his ground and seemed to enjoy doing it, who befriended many on this site, should now so suddenly be spirited away before he achieved many of the things he was capable, and before he had enough fun.

I never had the opportunity to climb with Daryn, but I am sure it would have been a riot. He is a part of what makes this community and will be missed.

Life is quite absurd.

My condolences to his friends and family.

You will be missed, my friend.

I am so shocked and sorry to hear about this. My thoughts go out to his friends and family.

Though I did not personally know him, his commentary would often make me laugh out loud. He was the first and only person to deliver me a 'Meatbomb', for which I instantly liked him. Things will certainly not be the same around here. I miss him already, and am so sorry to be reading about this.

Peace, Sty. We love you!

Damn, this is sure a sad thing. There are only a few that tell it the way he would. No sugar coating or hint of honey, just jam it at you with the sweat and truth all over the surface, as it should be. That is what I loved the most about him.
I will truly miss the wit, humor, and knowledge of this man, and cannot even express what a hole that leaves in this community. RIP Daryn.

Erin, thanks for letting us know and I'm so sorry to hear the news - Daryn will very much be missed in this community.

I guess this is very much real life on the Internet - and how society has changed. Our comings, goings, and musings linger, frozen in time as a lossless image of us indelibly impressed on a ubiquitous bit cloud. One can only guess the Egyptian Pharohs would be terribly envious of it all.

We met a few times out ice climbing and traded phone numbers for getting together the next ice season.
I liked Daryn the first time I met him.
He was super talented on the ice and would go and repeat any new ice climb that I would establish. Jumping on the internet and telling everyone how great it was.
He was one of the 1st to repeat the new 10 pitch ice climb on Stairway to Heaven that was established as well as putting together a killer photo of the climb.
What a great guy and great climber!
My most sincere condolences to his family and friends.

As someone who doesn't frequent rc.com as much as I used to, it was always nice to come on and feel something familiar. The dingus', the arrogant bastards, the rgold's and the stymingersfink's. And yes, even the jt512's. THese are the personalities that gave rc it's Cheer's appeal. It is never easy to hear of losing one of our own. We may have different opinions and we may defend those opinions through blood, sweat, and insults. In the end, we are all climbers, but more importantly, we are all human.

Rest in Peace, Daryn.

Josh

To Erin and all those who had the good fortune to know him personally, may peace be upon you. I'm one of the many who never had that honor, but "knew" him only through this site. He made me laugh; this makes me cry. I'm pleased to say that amid all the spray, he and I agreed far more often than we disagreed, and I felt that "if Sty's on my side, I don't care who's not."

But really, what the hell does "stymingersfink" mean? I guess in the afterlife, as in life, he'll always have us guessing. Peace, my man.

I think it means Stinky Fingers

I am saddened to hear that the climbing community has lost such a great entertainer. I only met Daryn last May in Indian Creek. It was there that I heard more jokes in the course of an evening campfire than I have ever heard in my entire life...and the classic was the next day at Incredible Hand Crack...he hiked up in a sarong with nothing underneath and geared up in a harness and attempted to climb....I still cringe thinking about that site...oh my ;)
God Bless and Keep you Always, Daryn...you are remembered!
Best wishes to all of Daryn's friends and family...I am so sorry!
Blessings,
Andrea

Do tell.
The closest I ever worked out was it's an anagram of "my fingers stink" or something.
I once had a wee chat with him about if Sty Mingersfink was his real name, and since it "was" where the last name Mingersfink came from, he said he didn't know and we talked about it for a bit.
I'm sure that he was, as usual, laughing all along at his tricksy but harmless joke - I mean, who would believe that's a real name?

I've read this thread as it's developed over the last few days and I still find it hard to come to terms with the fact that a core member of this community is now gone. Daryn, whose name I never knew until his tragic passing, was one of those guys you could always count on for a good laugh, and often a good insight too. It's weird to feel such a loss for someone I've never met, but his personality on these boards was one of the things that defined the atmosphere of RC.com.

I can only imagine how terribly this has affected those who had the good fortune to have known Daryn outside the confines of this little internet club, but I do know that he will be sorely missed around here.

This bro was one of a kind, in a field of copycat wannabe's.

He made me laugh... at myself as much as anyone else.

He made me think, which any number of people will tell you is damned hard to do, sometimes.

He even, on occasion, put a lump in my throat.

Sty/daryn was class, all the way, and the sun won't shine as bright around here for a long while without his peculiar take on the world.

Climb on, you crazy diamond...

Like many people here, I never got the chance to meet Sty in person but, like many others, he became a part of my life through this website. I am at a loss for words right now so I'll leave it with quote from a great poem many here have read

"I hope the climb to heaven is something less than 5.11"

RIP Sty.

I dunno. Maybe I just want him to still be around, but I think that's too easy. I think there's something more to it than a simple anagram. (No offense, Erin, but you guys haven't been together for a while, right?) I just think he was a lot cleverer than that. But like I said, maybe I just don't want him to be gone from these pages.

On the day Sty passed, I was in Tuolumne Meadows, thinking just how good it was to be alive in this gorgeous world.
(synchronicity)
On the night before I read the post about his passing, I watched the documentary on Joe Strummer of the Clash, who died unexpectedly, like Sty, of a heart condition that had gone undectected until it caused his death.
(synchronicity)
Some time ago I listed a post for free gear. While cleaning up the garage we had come upon some old ice climbing gear of my husband's, circa 35 years ago. An old ax, some old ice screws, a warthog etc. Daryn replied first that he wanted them, and I mailed them out to him. When they arrived he sent me an email - he was so pleased to have that stuff for his collection of vintage gear. His passion for ice climbing was clear.

My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

I never met Daryn, I live on the other side of the world, and yet there are some people whose soul touches you and to hear this is such a shock, I'm sitting on my couch in tears...

I don't know what to say, I will miss him, and yet we never shared a spoken word or set eyes on each other... just a casual word here and there in passing in random threads, but he was someone I was truly fond of.

I know if we'd lived in the same town/country we'd have had a hell of a laugh together...

I feel like I have lost a friend I never knew.

I, like most people on this site, never met sty, but I loved his posts. I had always hoped to run into him at the crag, or get the chance to climb with him, but alas that will never happen.

I am deeply sorry for your loss, and the worlds loss of an amazing person.

I was wondering where the memorial party is going to be held as I would like to attend.

I haven't posted much yet. Not sure why. Daryn's death hit me a little harder than I would have expected. How does that happen? I barely knew him. Hell, I didn't even know his name was Daryn until he was already gone. That this is a huge loss for all his friends and family is obvious. But it's also a big loss for this weird little community and, I guess, in some respect, for me too.

To Daryn's friends and family: All I ever really hope for after my life is ended is that I am remembered fondly and that those I love continue to live their lives to the fullest. It seems Daryn scored the first with ease. The rest is yours to fulfill.

I'm saddened by these news. Stinky was an important contributor here, a true, a colorful rccomer. I never met him but online, and his presence was important for the life and the balance of the forums.

My condolences to his family and close friends.

One thing I have learned from this is:

This whole experience has re-defined my sense of what a community is. Sure, we all communicate together, publicly and privately; we share, argue, tease, flirt, etc.

But the ability to grieve together, regardlesss of the fact that most of us have never met; for you guys to read of his death and sit down on the couch in shock and in tears, even though you knew him thru words on a page; for you to so totally "get" his personality, and love him for it, has irrefutably cemented in my heart that a community is any forum that provides contact and support for its members. And like any community, there is room for a whole host of personalities and characters. Daryn's was so unique and powerful, and he left no stone unturned in his quest to experience all life could give him.

I miss him alot, today.

He was a wonderful, sticky, stinker.

This was not the type of news I was wanting to here when I got back in town and had reliable internet again. Frown Sty (Daryn) and I chatted a lot on here over the years. Got to the point it was, like others, on a daily in many threads every damn day while I should have been working more and posting less. I never met him in person, but kindred spirits abound here it seems. I was always telling him that whenever he was able to get up to Canada again I would meet him in the Bugaboos and bring a bottle of fine single malt scotch... sadly that day won't come to pass now.

Sty buddy, I'll still bring that bottle of scotch to the Bugs for us. And hopefully next summer I'll hold a glass high with a few others who know you from here, toasting to your memory.

Rest peacefully my friend.

Hey Erin, Love you,
Finally getting around to posting up. I remember meeting this long haired Grizzly Adams guy one day over in the BD retail shop. We started talking about, of all things ice!! Who new that we would be climbing together for all these years. God what I wouldn't give for another day out. I will never forget all the good times that I was lucky enough to share with him. He is such a beautiful person. Keep in touch

Daryn, Bro, Thanks for the friendship, great times and laughs. Give a tug on the rope every now and then eh and leave some ice for me! I am going to miss you.

I posted this on utahclimbers.com as well, but seeing as he posted here more and I met him through this site, it seems appropriate to post it here too.

A bit after the fact, but I didn't see this thread until just now.

Daryn and I did the first 2-3 pitches of Stairway last year after work one day. There was a blinding snowstorm, but he was completely comfortable leading into it. We shouldn't have even hiked up the gully below the climb it was so wind-loaded, but we didn't really care enough to stop. I took a fall following because my hands were so numb, and my rope got stuck descending. We tied it off, and one of Daryn's friends got it the next day and he returned it to me. When we got down I had a message from the county sheriff asking us to check in when we got down, because they thought we were in trouble (headlights near Bridal Veil Falls at night in a snowstorm elicit concern I suppose).

I never saw him again after that (nor before) but we talked about ice a fair amount. In retrospect, I find it telling that the one time I went climbing with him it was such an epic, unexpected adventure, and one that none of my other partners would have considered going on. I'm almost glad that that is my sole memory of him, because it is such a good one.

We miss you Sty, 4 wks ago yesterday; one month tomorrow. You are not forgotten. Its snowing today and I know you'd be full-on stoked about the weather. Yesterday we did trail work w/ SLCA up in Little Cottonwood, in flurries of snow, melancholy and exciting. Looking up canyon towards the Icicle and across at the Scruffy Bands, I couldn't help but think of you, I missed you a ton, and I admit I cried alot. Not a day or hour goes by that you aren't in my thoughts. Love you always, Be in peace, -darlene

Sty buddy, I got in day one of my 2008/2009 season today. Thought about ya while I was up there. Wish we could have roped up for some sick Canadian Rockies Ice, but I guess that's life.

There was one pic of you that came to mind on the way home... that one of you soloing that made the front page. Fitting, as I was soloing thin early season ice today. Climb up a storm where-ever you are man.... just save some of the FA's for whenever it is the rest of us get there.

I was going to climb with him in Utah. I noticed this just today, wondered where he was and why I'd not heard from him recently.

It's come as a great 'shock', and I am really sorry to hear this sad and bad news.

Thought about Daryn the other day while driving through Castle Valley, heading home from my road trip. His last email to me ended with "The thing about opportunities is, they don't come around too often." I think about that often, and it pushes me during those times when I'm not at 100%.

Thanks for sharing. He's quite right of course.

We miss him alright, I think about him too, especially when I come on here. I should think he'd be happy to know we are all thinking of him and aren't likely to forget him, not that he'd be one to forget Smile

When I went through a bad patch he was very supportive, between my job change, and shared the anger of it all, but gave good advice too, bless him, e.g. that last job I was happy to walk from and not see those useless bad managers ever again; but he encouraged me to meet with them anyway with the Union as the Union wanted me to and tell them what I felt strongly about etc, he was right of course, and I fed it all back to him after, I left with a good payout etc so it was all wise words.

Amusingly, whenever there was a gap between interacting with Sty, I'd message him, and at the same time he'd say I was just about to do the same thing.

Well one of his last emails to me was more worrying, he'd been busy driving a lot with his work, around Idaho around that time, not getting much rest from what I gather, or not enough time to go climbing, though he was still managing to fit that in as I remember him telling me one day he was going to wait for his friend to show up for a climb the next morning. He'd also recently moved.

This was the 2nd to last email I received from him, on Aug 14th after I'd asked how he'd been? I liked his joking humour that still shone through despite the worrying side of things, and of course I understood what he meant - his end sentence at the bottom.

"... things been going uh... well? Crazy

About three weeks ago, my roommate found me in bed in the middle of a seizure, She called the medics, they came and assessed my situation, recommended I go to the hospital and get checked out. So, my other roommate drove me to the hospital, where they gave me a CT scan and did some blood work. CT showed no tumors, bloodwork showed nothing unusual. I was referred to a neurologist for follow-up.

I visited a neurologist the following week, and after going through his assessment, he figured that I the seizure was brought on by a long-term lack of sleep quality/quantity. With the statistic that 50% of people who experience a seizure never experience another one, he recommended that I work on getting more and better sleep, but that if I have another seizure I'll have to go on anti-seizure meds and we'll dig deeper.

Meh.

Well, the sleep thing has been a long-running thing for me, ever since my little Yosemite experience in the fall of '05 ...

Where you been lately? Busy with the new jorb, you take a wee bit of a climbing vacation, or just a vacation from this particular form of idiocy? Tongue

What a knowledgeable person he was. I always appreciated his candid insight on any climbing related topic.

He will be missed, and I will definitely raise a glass to his spirit.

Peace be with you.

You put me through the paces when I was new, and you were a truly recognizable member of this forum.

I've read some hilarious input from you on this site, and I do believe that we may have come to an agreement on something, once.

You really knew your stuff and it showed through past the jokes and general forum shenanigans.

I am genuinely sad to hear of your passing; you'll be missed here and elsewhere. Even though I never knew you as more than a forum vet, and a climber who knew more infinitely more than I, I do know that your time came far too soon. May you rest in peace, Daryn. My condolences to family and friends.

Brendan

Hello to everyone and best wishes, long time no see!

FYI: Tomorrow is Daryn's one-year anniversary, and we're remembering Sty by taking his ashes up to Lone Peak, a beautiful, rugged granite peak here in the Wasatch. Lone Peak was a favorite place of Daryn's and he often talked about making the trip back up there. His friends Matt, Jen, Howie, myself, and his Dad, Daryl, will make the trek. Erin we will for sure miss you, so sorry you cannot make it out, we will be thinking of you! All the rc.com folks, we'll take your thoughts and prayers with us. One thing I can say for sure: its going to be an absolutely gorgeous day.
Smile Angelic Sly

"Burn One Down"

Let us burn one from end to end,
And pass it over to me my friend.
Burn it long, we'll burn it slow,
To light me up before I go.

If you don't like my fire, then don't come around,
'cause I'm gonna burn one down.
Yes, I'm gonna burn one down.

My choice is what I choose to do,
And if I'm causing no harm, it shouldn't bother you.

Your choice is who you choose to be,
And if you're causin' no harm, then you're alright with me.

If you don't like my fire, then don't come around,
'cause I'm gonna burn one down.
Yes, I'm gonna burn one down.

Herb the gift from the earth,
And what's from the earth is of the greatest worth.
So before you knock it try it first,
Oh, you'll see it's a blessing and not a curse.

If you don't like my fire, then don't come around,
'cause I'm gonna burn one down.
Yes, I'm gonna burn one, oohhh.

Just checking in on the thread. A lot of people think that this socializing on forums doesn't mean much, but this goes to show that it actually does to many of us. Sometimes you never get to meet that other person, but it's all good.

Crazy how people still cross your mind. I was on a road trip for a bit and I have to say Daryn crossed my mind more than a few times on the trip. It may have been the dehydration, or the Scotch in the summit... but I got the warm fuzzys when I raised the Summit Flask in salute at the top of a couple climbs.

Now that I think about it... the suck rope... 3 times in a row while trying to rap off of one of the Spires in the needles... in the middle of a thunderstorm...

.... I'm sure that it was either a practical joke, or he was laughing his ass off watching. Or both.

So do I, whenever I come on here. I was to climb with him at some point in Utah after he offered to be my guide. Now it's not to be. Shite happens. My own circumstances changed too a year or so later.

I remember my last conversation with him on here commonly, he was in Idaho working crappy hours and sleeping in his van, forgot something or other (sleeping bag I think) plus enough food and hoped his mate would remember to bring him some in the morning. He wasn't getting enough climbing in at that time, and as I knew he'd had the odd epileptic fits being found by his room mate as he told me once followed by the odd check up in hospital as a result, it did concern me his being alone at those times. He also said he couldn't come over the border to Canada as he'd had some issue before that meant he couldn't for a period of time, hence how I came to the decision to climb with him at some point in Utah, plus I really wanted to go there and check it out.

He will always be missed, and was a special person for sure especially so with regard to the level climbing he did (Ice), the amount of people he interacted with on here, and how well liked he was,bow he stopped/intercepted any nastiness from others on another in his own humorous way, how he could raise your spirit when feeling down and make you feel better about everything again (as he did a year or so earlier after I had a horrible nasty bully experience at work) that I got investigated, and then decided to resign from that job or I'd have decked the culprit that set me up. I remember wanting to just walk early on from it all early on as I had enough, and he gave me the courage to sit there and say my piece at the meeting I was to go to with my Union, which paid off. He was unique for sure.

How, not bow (damn keyboard)
