I once spotted someone at a crag that vaguely resembled Edmund Hillary with a sherpa.

It wasn't cold and snowing so I'm not sure.

It's unlikely that anybody that fat is a famous climber.

Edit: I climbed with camhead once.

Edward Whymper on the Matterhorn. I was on the side of the rope where four of us fell to our deaths.

I was later reincarnated as a wasp and was living an idyllic life high on El Cap, but Warren Harding thought I was in the way of his Nose route and sent me and my friends to our maker.

Later I was reincarnated as a hop plant, but was harvested for beer and John Sherman got ahold of me.

In my most recent life I have been living as a devil-may-care connoisseur of flavored Cheerios and screw top Slim Fast shakes. This renewed interest in taking care of my body has resulted in me climbing with Chris Sharma. Here's a picture of me and Chris:

That's me, third from the left and two rows back on the upper balcony. Well, I was there but then I had to go to the bathroom, but I was that close to him.

Last two climbers I climbed with were Jim Donnini and Jack Tackle in Tetons and these guys are awesome. Hopefully we are going to do FA next year but I can't talk about it here.

I also had dinner with yvon chaunard, chat with Dean potter and few other people here and there and climbed with few famous sherpas in Himalayas who were part of the David Breashears IMAX Everest movie crew few years back.ohh yaa, I ran in to Conrad Anckor on Tetons as well but you guys do not think he is that famous.just kidding,Ron Kauk is cool dude.

The climbing world is small. If you participate for a while you will meet many climbers that are published about.

In passing or actually have conversations and occasionally maybe do some climbing together.

Especially if you hang out in a few of the places most serious climbers eventually go.

I can't think of a single notable climber I have met who wasn't friendly and interesting to talk to when I have had the chance. And the few I have climbed with I had good experiences.

Here are my most memorable 'Star Struck' moments.

I used to climb with Mike Reardon all the time (if you count getting lapped multiple times in a row at Tahquitz).

John Gill gave me a spot at Mt. Woodson a while back. I wrote him off as crazy when he told me he had 'invented' chalk...

Willie Benegas freed my 'fixed cam' (according to my partner) on the first pitch of Open Book and returned it to me 20 minutes later on top.

Did an FA in noiZ with God...but I never really saw him. But he was there, because every pitch my buddy lead he talked to God the whole time..."God, that placement sucks! God this pitch iz dirty! God, I'm outta Gear! God, send up the drill!"

I've only climbed with Infamous climbers: GMBurns and ADatesman.

FWIW I thought they were both very nice.

Dialogue ensued:

BMR- "Let's try this 10c roof"

Burnz- "Looks runout"

BMR- "Nah, it's all good, bomber gear"

Aric- "I'll bounce-test your placements"

Burnz- "I'll take pics for you from down here"

BMR- "I assure you there's plenty of bomber gear"

Aric- "Lemmie calculate the rope angles around the lip"

Burnz- "It's getting cold, you guys go for it"

Aric- "But you're the heaviest, the bounce tests work best under intense blort"

BMR- "I'm not testing anything, let's just climb it"

Burnz- "It's too cold and consensus is it's PG13"

Aric- "Well, if we're not testing, I'm taking my stuff and I'm going home!"

In 1978, I tried Clever Lever in Eldorado Canyon, while Pat Ament watched me (while drinking beer and shouting beta).
In 1980, I climbed with Wolfgang Gullich for two weeks in Eldorado Canyon. He was on a mission to climb all of the 5.12s.
In 1982, I had a cool bouldering sesh with Wolfgang and John Bachar on the Camp 4 boulders.
In 1984 or so I climbed with John Sherman in Yosemite (Crack a Go-go and Separate Reality).
In 1992, I shared a belay on the Nose with Hans Florine and Peter Croft while they achieved their landmark ascent in 4:22.
In 1995, I shared a bivy up on Half Dome with Todd Skinner.
In 2006, Henry Barber came to our Quartz Mountain Gathering and although I didn't share a rope with him, I climbed nearby and yakked with him for a couple of days.

Ran into Fred in August in the bugs. at 80 some years old he made the hike up to the hut look easy.

didn't climb with him (probably one of the few from what I hear) but he sure as hell impressed me on the hike in. I don't think he ever broke a sweat.

I'm hope I'm doing that good when I'm that age. Hell, I hope I just live that long.

I took MR on a bouldering circuit of mine in JT. Nothing was harder than V8 or so, but he sent everything--not always on the first try, but after 2 or 3 attempts, for sure.

There aren't any witnesses to the boldest solos he claimed to have done, and the fact that he could boulder V8 in a few attempts in no way implies that he could or did do do those solos. Which part do you not understand?

So those individuals implying that he didn't (or couldn't) solo a lot of "hard stuff" are full of shit--and there are plenty of witnesses. Which part didn't you understand?

Curt

There aren't any witnesses to the boldest solos he claimed to have done...

So, he filmed and photographed himself then?

No, but he was accused by witnesses of staging at least some of the shoots.

Did you stage your avatar pic to be the same stance as curt's? Did you use some trick with the negative to tweak the perspective and switch out a few colors?

Who's trying to be who here?

I wonder why the same ten or so folks here make the forums their personal room? Alway about them and their opinions. We all have opinions, and I happen to agree with Curts. So what.

Why does this select few think they own RC.newb?
Decay, us lurkers and sometimes posters see it, why can't they?

I sat next to Sharma while he waited in the bathroom line at Miguel's...

...and I did climb with camhead.

Chris Sharma threw a chalk bag into the crowd and I caught it...and I'm NEVER washing that chalk bag as long as I live...NEVER!!! Cool

If you combine that with a strict protocol of kissing his autographed poster during morning prayers, you will achieve 5.15 climbing ability... in your afterlife.

I put my project at risk one day by showing it to him. After about 3 attempts he threw his shoes on and stepped up to the first move. Pulled up off the ground for a few seconds a few times but never stuck the 1st move. He looked at his fingers and immediately decided not to put any of his other projects at risk by trying it any further.

The next season I was finally able to send it. To this day it stands as the greatest project of all boulder problems I ever put time into.

Not sure if Chris has ever returned to finish it off but to keep things in perspective. I still got burned by Natasha Barnes who flashed it, then later by Kehl in like 3 tries. Just one of those really fingery problems that maximizes the crimp.

I heard Ethan Pringle asking Natasha Barnes for a pre-send "release" before a burn attempt three years ago at Hueco near the base of Chris's Arete'.

Bouldered with Leo Houlding in Huaraz after meeting him and his mates in The Thai restaurant the night before. This was in 2000, and I think I remember Leo bragging about how he had turned 18 that day. needless to say I couldn't get off the ground on his warmup problems. I did howevere drink more beer than he did that night in El Tambo.

Better than that...

Ever seen Mike Call's vid "Best of the West"?

The problem is Doggie Jump, there's even a try of me throwing for the lip. Chris was working "Filet Mignon" nearby which is also in the vid.

As far as Chris posting... He reads your posts and if he posts he won't reveal who he is, as far as I know your Chris. lol, but I doubt it, he's not the type of person to mess with people from what I remember.

If you really want to ask Chris some serious questions try looking up an email through one of his sponsors, Evolv perhaps? Maybe Prana. Send him a mail introducing yourself and throw him some questions. If he's bored on a rest day he may just return it.

Chris is a cool dude, he'll likely want to hear as much about your climbing as you would like to hear of his.

About five years ago my partner had just come down off South Tower in the Needles SD and ran into Herb and Jan Conn. They were out for a hike so we didn't climb with them but we did chat with them for a while about their FA of the route we'd just done.

Let's just say it was a tremendously humbling experiencing to hear about how Herb lead the climb with 60 feet of goldline, dime store sneakers, and a hand full of pitons placed only at the belay.

Fred Beckey in the 90's. Backside of the chief. Marc Bourdon...high angle rigging course.

Climbed with some old school partners of Peter Croft's when he was cutting his teeth in squamish in the 80's....but i never got to climg with Peter himself.

Ran Kaulk lent some insight to me at camp 4 on Midnight Lightning....all though it was in vein lol. Nice guy though, for sure....but i will never be able to boulder that piece with or without Ron.lol.

And i have rigged beside or been rigged by (for film) many of the Squamish legends; Dave Lane, Peter Ourum, Perry Beckham...

yacked with...Peter Croft, Tammy Knight, Hamish Fraser, Robin Barley, Jim Sandford, Lynn Hill, Ron Kaulk

You're wrong. Getting to share a rope with a famous climber is cool, not because they are famous or sponsored, but because they are good climbers.

My recent climbing with these guys in Iran

Jim Donini, Mark Wilford, Chris Weidner, Branndon Bargo, Mary Ann Dornfeld, Jennifer Fleming, Greg Crouch, and Stephen Alvarez

Jim is strong climber and Mark, ohh boy, he has some balls and Chris is awesome guy.

Wait for National Geographic in Feb 2012 to read about it.

I met Fred Beckey in Washington via a guy that had climbed with him and got his autograph for the record (not sure I still have it now mind).

For me the most famous, as far as famous goes, was my trad lead guide who I completed my one day course with at Squamish.. he must be some what famous he's in the Squamish guide book for some of the first ascents on the Chief

It wasn't my problem, but it was called Doggie Jump.

Wishbone is the steep line at the Bone Town wall at Homestead I bolted, you may have climbed it when you visited, I can't remember much more than you sending everything you tried on Slate Nation.

Anyone here ever climb with RGold?? I have :) Also climbed with Dick Williams, Rich Gottlieb, and Rich Romano. I guess I'm not really connected or something, but I either don't know what famous climbers look like, or I offend them at the cliff, because I have not climbed with anyone more famous than that. Oh wait...I take that back...I bouldered with Leo Houlding one afternoon outside Huaraz Peru back in 2001. Another totally zany person I've climbed with several times...probably not famous to anyone but a handful of northeast ice climbers...Joe Szot

I've met and chatted with some famous climbers including Joe Simpson at a bar in Huaraz, John Bragg at the Gunks, Jim Shimberg, Rick Wilcox, Colin Haley, Lynn Hill, Bean Bowers, Matt Segal, Vince Anderson, Henry Barber

I think Camhead has the most impressive list so far.

Hmmm... I remember it somewhat differently. Then again (as has already been pointed out) I am getting old. In any event, I am officially designating "April Showers" as my favorite Gunks route, in memory of my visit there with you and the clamheads.

I guess my memory is not getting better with time, either...

I thought it was Golden Showers, where we all ate dirt, while you patiently demonstrated that really, the start moves were so easy that they could be done is approach shoes?

I am sure you can pick a few faves like that in Hueco-- want to try in march?
