Fuck Mac.

So things have recently started to not run on my computer because my OS is too old. It's a pain in the ass. I have OSX Tiger.

So I decided to get Mac's latest operating system, Lion.

But in order to buy Lion, you have to already have Snow leopard, which you also have to buy.

And in order to get Snow Leopard without breaking the law, you have to have Leopard, which you also have to buy.

So I have to buy THREE FUCKING OPERATING SYSTEMS just to fucking upgrade to the newest one? Fuck that.

Mac can lick my sweaty fucking hairy nutsack, I'm downloading Linux tonight.

Dear moron,
Lion isn't an OS, it's an app. And you can buy Snow Leopard straight up. Do they even sell Leopard anymore? Fuck it, you'll be better off with Windows. Tongue

Buying snow leopard without leopard is a breach of Apple's TOS. Even when you can buy Lion on a stick you can't even put it on a clean laptop, you have to have snow leopard. I checked this stuff out for like 40 minutes last night before I decided they can fuck themselves.

Edit:Typo fix. Changed "with" to "without".

Dont know about the situation in Britain, but at least here in germany those TOS do not have any legally binding value. As long as you buy it and do not download an illegitimate copy, you are free to do whatever you want with it. Of course if you are doing somthing unsupported you are on your own, but thats about it.

But even if you manage to obtain lion:

Are you really sure that you actually can run it? If your mac is still on tiger, i would think that it will be to old for lion anyways. I am too lazy to google the specs, but there are a few intel- macs that arent supported anymore.

sometimes i do miss some of the nicer features of the OS, but i am happy that i dont have to bother with Kim Jong-jobs dictatorship anymore.

I combines (did combine?) the weak points of ubuntu with the weak points of KDE and left out what make ubuntu good, leaving me with a system that was somewhat nonstandart in many aspects, with a buggy DE and a broken localization, without anything working automatically like it would in ubuntu.

Then i went to OpenSuse (really easy to use), and after that developed a bug with virtualbox that i couldnt solve i went to fedora (not as hard as it used to be, in fact also quite easy, just some more work (=reading wiki pages) to get some proprietary stuff to work) (after a short flirt with freeBSD), all the while thinking wether i should leave behind the broken mess that is KDE, but every new version is so much better (until i find the spots where stuff stopped working)…

No.
Apart from the security and elitist hipster issues it just doesnt feel right. I am more leaning towards something stable (Scientific linux is supposed to be rather good), but stable doesnt really work with KDE since that always needs the latest version.

So far I lurv Kubuntu. I am totally in love with the dancing icons that follow your mouse while a program is loading.

I am still finding my way around the interface, but it seems good. ReKonq doesn't seem to have a spell checker yet so I'll probobly switch back to firefox, but I am tottaly sold on the 2 desktop thing. I need to get an OS X boot disc so I can boot from disc and bless Kubuntu so it starts up faster, though.

I'll sneak a peak at archlinux, Jay.

Curt - I should have kept up, but I didn't. That's the thing with Mac, if you got the money to keep up to date with everything it may well be the best system avalible, but if you don't you get left behind really fast.

What are you trying to say here?
Are you running from a live CD, and somehow need an OSX DVD to be able to install Linux (because of bootcamp?)?

Nah, it's just a funky thing with macs. It takes an extra 10-15 seconds to boot linux unless you "bless" the partition from OS X*. I'm not using bootcamp or rEFIt or anything.

*bless --device /dev/disk0s2 --setBoot --legacy --verbose

The world may never know why.

See, that's what's wrong with Ubuntu in a nutshell. You're not limited to two "desktops" (I assume you mean workspaces) in Linux. You can have as many as you want (I use nine). Ubuntu makes too many decisions for the user (like Windows does, but not as badly) and hides too many configurable features. They're all there, just harder to find.

Do you know about virtual terminals? Most distros configure seven by default (you can have many more, if for some reason you need them). Hold down the left <Ctl> and <Alt> keys and press one of <F1> . . . <F6>. Now you're in a virtual terminal. Follow the prompts to log in. Now you can enter commands. Try 'ls', 'ls -a' and 'ls -al' for listings of the current directory in various formats. Need to do something that doesn't require a GUI, like compile a program? You can do it here. When you're done, optionally type 'exit' to log out of the VT. Then hold down the left <Alt> key and press <F7> to put you back into virtual terminal 7, where your GUI, or more specifically, an "X server" is running. In fact, you can run multiple instances of the X server and thus have multiple GUI desktops, one in each VT, each with essentially unlimited numbers of workspaces.

In reply to:

Sneak a peak, but I wouldn't recommend Arch to anyone who hasn't used another Linux distro for at least six months and who isn't familiar with using the Linux command line. It's a great distro but the learning curve will likely be too frustrating to someone new to Linux.

I found out how to make more workspaces. For now I have 4, super handy.

I forgot how to escape the VT, haha. Freaked out till I worked it out. Exit not working=panic.

While i do agree about ubuntu going a bit tuphar with all their "lets hide stuff to make it easier" attitude, I wouldnt exactly use only two virtual desktops as an example. Every distro has a default here, and i cant exactly see why 4 would be better than 2 (or 1, or 6 …), especially since it is really easy to add more (with KDE at least).

In reply to:

They can come in handy, but i would suggest for a terminal beginner, some terminal emulators, such as Konsole are more usefull.

Isnt it <alt>>ctrl><f7>?
Also on some distros (namely fedora, but wouldnt be surprised if 'buntu does that too) the main (graphical) user is on f1.
Also i think you might want to correct you use of the term "unlimited". If i remember correctly, all WMs/DEs have a limit to how many workspaces they can handle (somehow i have the number 50something floating around in my head, but dont know where i got that from, and wich DE is was).

I've used it in limited amounts on the school computers, my computer programming module (not a proper course, just a side thing of physics using java to make equation solvers) was on linux, so I have a basic knowledge of it. [nerd] It's pretty exciting, though. I mean, I never knew what a kernal or anything was before. Just installing the program and reading about how to do things has quadrupled my knowledge and understanding of how computers work.[/nerd]

Snow Leopard upgrade works on Tiger-equipped Intel Macs. I can back up this assertion with my own experience—Tiger to Snow Leopard, one disc.
I know it works, I am just pissed at a company that would put "GIVE US MONEY FOR NO REASON" into their TOS.

Anyways, I am commited. No more OSX on my laptop, all linux from here on out. I even ordered some Kubuntu stickers to put over all the little apples on my computer.

I bought a multipack that comes with a big one to cover the apple on the back, a strip saying "Kubuntu" to cover the "macbook" under the screen, and even two little ones to cover the apples on the keys. Hah!

They can come in handy, but i would suggest for a terminal beginner, some terminal emulators, such as Konsole are more usefull.

Isnt it <alt>>ctrl><f7>?

That'll probably work, but the <ctl> isn't necessary in a virtual terminal. On some machines only the left <alt> key will work.

Also on some distros (namely fedora, but wouldnt be surprised if 'buntu does that too) the main (graphical) user is on f1.

I've never seen that, even when I used Fedora (8).

In reply to:
Also i think you might want to correct you use of the term "unlimited". If i remember correctly, all WMs/DEs have a limit to how many workspaces they can handle (somehow i have the number 50something floating around in my head, but dont know where i got that from, and wich DE is was).

You're right. Apparently, it depends on the window manager. Metacity apparently has a limit of 36.

There's more useful discussion about rock climbing in this thread alone than the entire forums combined history x 2.

And the only useful OS out there is Cisco IOS so you can all suck it.

So I am slowly mastering the customization of the KDE/Plasma desktop. So rad!

And with all the themes/icons/etc. you can download it's so easy to get a rad looking and super efficient layout. I approve.

I just spent almost $400 to replace the display on my GF's Macbook. It was pretty obvious that there was just a loose connection in the display unit but Apple insists on building everything with no serviceable parts so that meant replacing the whole thing. Can't say that I'm very happy with Apple right now.

It would have cost about half as much if I had bought Applecare but since I think that that kind of insurance is total bullshit I refused. Stand by your goddamn product and build it to last. IMO, every Apple product has this problem. When it works, it's great. The moment something goes wrong you have to replace everything and it gets expensive fast.

My sister's iMac had a similar issue. Something fried on the motherboard and instead of fixing it, they were told to replace the whole unit to the tune of $800. They bought a new computer instead and now have a beautiful iMac screen that can no longer be used. Totally ridiculous.

Actually there is some quote by the great Führer Jobs himself floating around that you are supposed to replace you apple product at least every two years. If you are not doing that, its your own fault!

That's hard to argue with (even for me). If you have to have Windows at all, sequestering it in VirtualBox, I think, is the way to go. And you can't beat the lightness and slimness of the Mac for portability.

Actually, have you seen the new Dell XPS 15z? It's meant to be their "macbook killer". It's kinda a ripoff of the air. It's pretty much the same size, has an i5, 4gb ram, 500gb SSD, and also a dvd drive.

http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/...dell-xps-15z-review/

My sister actually got one yesterday. I didn't end up installing arch cuz I had to help her move all her files over from her very much dead old laptop.

It's not quite as nice as the air, but it's pretty damn nice.

How is a 15" behemoth in any way comparable to apples cake cutter?

The only way to go in laptops is business laptops! Lenovo thinkpads (though they are starting to kill the brand), HP elitbooks (though HP went full retard recently), Dell lattitudes and precisions (though the new series is an atrocity), Panasonic toughbooks and maybe some others.

Or get a disposable netbook.

Yup - I'm stuck with Windows because in contrast to US universities, everyone here barring the comp. sci. and maths departments is in bed with Microsoft. Was able to successfully argue for the Linux machine because the modelling software I run on it (NAMD) is native there. As for the Air, well, it's a Unix-based OS, making it absurdly easy to ssh to my big machine wherever I happen to be. That, and it's got style.

It's pretty good. We have it on all the lab computers in the physics department. It works quickly and smoothly, but I am a big dork and like to make things look really nice, and there are just a few things about scientific that stop you from really making you desktop look totally sweet. For example, I often like to have a bottom bar with nothing but task manager and desktop selector, then have my icons on a pop-out bar on the left, and my time/date/etc. on a bar in the top right that is offset from the side so I can see my mini/max/close buttons. I like the window to go under the shorty panel in the top right. On scientific it is almost impossible to make the window go under the panel.

Also, even when you make the panels transparent, the "move this panel" bits at the side are still white with the tiny dots on, and it looks ugly.

If you are not a big dork these types of things likely aren't an issue. You definitely won't notice them if you run it "windows style" with the task launcher, task manager, and time/date all on a single bottom or top bar.

Other then the cosmetic stuff I lurv it, though. I think the file manager is really simple and easy to use, and it has little or no clutter on any of the windows. It is also fast.

Plus you get to feel like a badass cuz CERN and Fermilab made it Tongue

I think LXDE is too light, and GNOME, too complicated, the latter requiring a truckload of dependencies that inevitably broke something eventually. When I used a DM, I thought xfce was just about right.

But, have you thought about foregoing the DM altogether, and just going with a window manager? I'm currently using xmonad, a tiling window manager, and I can't imagine ever wanting to go back to a non-tiling WM.

My macbook woes continue. The power supply cable snapped at the strain relief. What an absolutely idiotic design! Mad It's less than a month over warranty and I can't open the stupid thing to fix it. Ended up cutting the wire and kluging the coax back together.

It really pisses me off that Apple products not only break just after the warranty expires but they are designed to have no serviceable parts. They do not stand behind their hardware at all.

I like the OS and the touchpad but I'm beginning to hate just about everything else.

I just started a new job and the systems there are built around Windows 7. It's been a while.

I think I will try simple first before I get carried away with over the top desktop effects. I'll check out xmonad, the tiling thing looks pretty rad.

Do you mean like the compiz effects where the windows burn when you close them and wobble about when they move? Those bug me. I do, however, like it when my windows go transparent when I move them, and when it is very easy to move them between desktop spaces.
