for those of you who have the gopro cameras, how do you mount it for climbing? what are the best mounting options for the best shots for what the climber sees, and what about a way to attach it to the rockl? for some cool shots of someone climbing up to the camera. attach it to a cam maybe? some sort of flexable mount? i just got my hero 3 camera for climbing and cant wait to use it

Based on the vast majority of GoPro vids I have seen, I would mount it to a first aid kit with a satellite phone included.

Don't mount it to your helmet unless you're supplying Dramamine to your viewers. In seriousness, the only good videos I've seen were shot from anchors or from a helicopter.

Be sure to use your survival bracelet to tie it all together.

I have never seen a GOOD climbing video shot with a gopro.

1. The lens is too wide angle for POV climbng shots - everything has that nasty barrel/fisheye distortion.
2. When climbing, we move our heads *a lot*, I mean, really, really, a lot. It results in sucky jerky-cam footage.

The OP may be really jazzed about his new toy, but for dog sake don't mount it to anything on your head.

You think that is a good one? To me, it encapsulates everything that is bad about gopro videos. Sure, I've seen worse, but I wouldn't call it a GOOD climbing movie. But if that is the type of video that you want, then it is pretty clear that it was mounted on a helmet. You should do the same.

The only acceptable to use GoPro is hook it up to quadcopter. Then you can make a clip like this

It didn't even have the usual near-death fall.

I agree with Lena. I haven’t seen a Climbing GoPro video I liked yet. However, I wouldn’t mind seeing someone crush something really hard from the climbers perspective. You would need to fix the camera to the climbers torso for it to be watchable though.

I think they make a vest that has a pole that sticks out of the back of the climber. It basically gets an overhead shot. If the climber is a super static climber it might look ok.

Personally I would just use an Octocopter.

That was horrible; I had to fast forward through 95% of it. Generally speaking, these type of vids are meant for substandard climbers to post on YouTube so that they can link them on Facebook to impress non-climbers. Don't be that guy.

hate the go pro. the self portrait shot to impress others or to make friends jealous that they're not there. shitty quality and honestly, i don't want to look at the activity through the user's eye.

i've seen too many in the ski industry..........can't be bothered to to even clicky on the the climbing ones.

That video absolutely sucked. I was getting nauseous before teh 0:30 sec mark. Couldn't watch the whole thing.

A chest mount doesn't fix the fisheye distortion, and since your chest is even closer to the rock than your head, the claustrophobic feeling will be even more intense. You should be striving to make videos that suck less, not more.

Sounds like that camera may be better suited for making POV home porn. Give it a go and report back.

Hahaha this whole thread has made me laugh.. "GoPros suck cause i cant afford one but my friends can and now I'm jealous."

It's really simple, if you don't want to watch it, don't click it dumbass.

They are cameras made to be worn IN MOTION; obviously the quality isn't going to be the same as your fucking Hollywood films with cameras 20x the size of a Hero3.

All you people getting "nauseous" from watching a video, are you serious? I have certainly laughed at more pitiful things but LOL. Your bashing the quality of a camera cause you cant hold your stomach down. I'm going to keep checking this in hopes of more laughs.

the statement is: "GoPros suck for Climbing videos. And I have yet to see a good GoPros Climbing vid. (Falling vids, otoh are quite well captured by the GoPro, if you are into that.

Might you be a bit touchy because your cool dude-brah vids have been deemed unworthy?

Yep, my "cool dude-brah" videos; cause i shot them and put them up right? They show exactly what you want them to show, your POV of climbing or whatever else your doing. Its not to show your recording skills and how still your can record while climbing or skiing. Your expecting way to much from a camera the size of a matchbox which is made to attach to the body to show the ACTION.

Yep. and that makes them pretty bad for capturing climbing. Because your POV when climbing is, simply: look down at feet. look up at handholds ahead, look down at feet, look up at hands, look around while shaking, look down at feet, look up at hands, repeat ad nauseam. (in this case, literally, for the viewers)

You want to see a good climbing video that captures what the movement looks like? Click on any one of these:

http://topfreeclimb.tv/best-of-2012/

You want to watch your own pornGoPro videos? Go right ahead. Post it for all your friends to see, too. It is nothing to me. But don't get offended when someone asks about mounting options and is told that they all suck (other than, possibly, the helicopter). They do, it's the truth. And if that video that was linked upthread is really yours, than you have quite a bit to worry about, other than getting offended at people not liking it.
