You went to a CITY with over 15,000 people. That is not a small town by any means. It's one of the biggest cities outside of the Front Range, what did you expect?

It took me all of thirty seconds to figure out what I already suspected with a quick trip to Wikipedia. Seems a bit unfair to rag on Durango because you had unrealistic expectations.

There are any number of TOWNS nearby that would be close to climbing and skiing. Here, educate yourself: http://en.wikipedia.org/...nd_towns_in_Colorado

Oh, and good luck finding a public gym in almost any municipality that calls itself TOWN of _______.

You want small? How about Buena Vista, CO? They have a gym open seasonally and the town is tucked in the foot of a bunch of 14ers. Local cragging with Indy Pass about an hour away and a population of 2100. No ski lifts but you can hike your ass to the top of some coulairs and then come screaming down. Mt Massive is about an hour away and a few years ago there was skiing until July on that bad boy.
