Well randy, I think if you want to know where the boulders are, you just need to do some research. Without knowing anything about Allentown, or ever being there, I am 99.9% sure I have located the boulders. All I need to do is drive out there to confirm it. Kagunkie has left more than enough ample clues leading to the location. I found all the resources possible right here on the internet, including maps, topos, and what have you not. All the clues are there, just use them!! Hope to catch up with you sometime this summer to climb dude. <=glen=>

Bob Murray once said that some of the best bouldering in PA he ever found or was introduced to was in north east PA, Check mile marker 98 off of the NE Ext. of the PA TPK Bobby D thanks for the edit.

What part of the turnpike? The blue route, the northeast extension, the part that goes through harrisburg? I'm guessing you mean the NE extension. I haven't lived around here for awhile and have a hard time remembering all these darn roads. I honestly think PA has the worst road system in the country....

Pocono is mile 95 and Wilkes-Barre is mile 105 off the NE extension--not sure if that's what he means though. I haven't driven up that way in a while.

In reply to: Bob Murray once said that some of the best bouldering he ever found was in north east PA, Check mile marker 98 off of the NE exit of the PA TPK That should read: the best bouldering in PA. I took Bob to these boulders back in 1988. He enjoyed them and found a few, steep problems to his liking. Do not park on the turnpike, the state police will ticket your car or have it towed. There is another access area to the east. You have to walk about a mile or so up an old logging road that ends near the bolted (excellent) climbs and above the bouldering.

And does this mysterious place have a name, or is just the mile marker 98 rocks?

In reply to: That problem "Pile Driver" you put up there is Fantastic!! Not a lot of climbers have repeated that. That is a great problem and a funny story behind the FA. AL and I walk by it one day and he pointed it out to me (he already named it) . I was under the impression that he already did it. BM and I went to do about a month later. I did it first and then Bob. When bouldering with Al again about a year later and he told me about this problem he was working on. Pile Driver was the problem. We both did it that day and I didn't have the heart to tell him we already did it.

Thats Wild, I bet Al would be unerved about it. I was working a problem just left of "The Half Moon"a while back. It was very hard. Real blank and smooth. I never got it. Did you or Bob ever do that one. ~Rob

BM did it. I also sent the slides (about 40) for show. Good luck with it and hope you raise some money for the re-bolting. At that time in the 80s I can honestely said that BM was the strongest climber I have ever been around.

Great, Thanks again. Everyones gonna love those old pics of you guys. That's amazing he did that line. It had to be at least B2 at the time. I got the "half Moon" but I get shot down every time I try that other line. I think the route to the left is still one of the hardest problems in PA. Thanks again for the slides. I cant wait to see them ~Rob

Finally found these Patriot things after driving around on my lunch hour for a couple of days. Kagunkie has actually given sufficient clues to figure out where they are. Once they turn off the rain.......

In reply to: ok lets hide climbing places, i cant wait till i find it, im gonna take a 100 pictures and put directions up that is always the best "cure" for secret areas. As I stated in the CT threwad, if you truly want to keep it secret, say NOTHING. Once you let the cat out of the bag, its going to get foudn and published, period.

Shoot...there are lots of boulders and cliffs to find in PA. You just need to hike a bit, use topo zone and get some good binoculars. If you did a topo of Allentown, you could probably find possible locations...duh :D Get out there and start humping a bit.

And it's not South Mountain Boulders either.

I finally got off my lazy arse, took into consideration the hints that were said and found this place. Too bad it was overgrown, must have been awhile since peoplelast climbed Patriot. The rain also hindered alot of the problems but I would like to go back there again. Any takers? Just remember, the boulders are within eye distance. You do not have to look hard, you'll be amazed when you find them.

Not sure where the bolted stuff is but there is bound to be some good bouldering in the area.. I'm pretty sure I remember seeing people climbing at the francis walter reservoir when I was younger / not into climbing. Anyone from the area who can confirm? I was there approx 1 year ago and found some o.k. boulders near the exit side of the dam to the one side of the lehigh river, but it's on the side of a hill and most would not find it worth the effort to hike in and top rope it. There is bound to be other stuff up on the lake side of the dam, just a short canoe trip away...
