I feel a little bad about how my previous tone could have come off, and knowing what I do now about the incident, I would just like to point out that a lot of details are not being made public right now, but that just saying "helmet?" is distilling it a little too crudely and not quite to the point. Given the circumstances, I am not sure a helmet as we understand them to be used would be relevant here. There are other lessons to be learned for sure, and if the parents of the child are willing to open themselves up to the discussion, I think people will have more to say than knee-jerk to "helmet." I do hope the child is okay and not too traumatized. She's a pretty little girl, seemed very sweet, hardly needed her day ruined by a flying chunk of rock. Just because things could have been done differently to prevent her injury doesn't mean anybody deserved such a scare. And FWIW, the one blood-spurting rockfall injury I've sustained was not a head injury. I'd have been doubled over crying and clutching my bloody HAND no matter what was on my head. I say this just to say that helmets are only a PART of crag safety. Not worth preaching about from either camp so much as recognizing that a lot more can damage you than getting brained.

Thank goodness, the girl is okay. From the top of Being There, I heard everything very clearly. I thought for sure someone got really seriously hurt or worse. It was chilling, and I felt a little sick listening. From the sound of the rockfall, I imagine it could have been worse. Sure convinced me to wear my helmet all the time. Cheers, Terry

I am glad to hear the girl ill be fine. I have not climbed anywhere let alone Williamson in over 3 years. But when I was climbing regularly like 3-4 days a week I got to see alot of stupid behavior. One that sticks out in my mind was a young couple who brought there baby with them and set up there porta-crib right at the base of the London Wall. This was back in the mid 90's when the rock was realy loose. Fortunatly there were no accidents but I cringe when I think of it.
