First of all, who are you calling old timers? Me?

OK, guilty.

The Placid Olympics, and the Miracle on Ice indirectly influenced the rest of my life. I am Edge, and this is my story. (Previously seen on http://www.norope.com

That's a great story, L. You should post it in trip reports so that we can rate it.

Yeah, Edge.... YOU. Heck, you're so old, you probably remember when the Dead Sea was only sick with the flu. ;)

FYI, the game will be aired on ESPN Classic tonight at 8 pm, EST. Get some chips, beer, and the remote control, and watch one of the greatest hockey games of all time.

Hardly old but I remember it vividly. I was 9, sitting in a hotel room in Hayward Wisconsin with my parents. That game and the giant Musky you can walk in are about my only happy memories of Hayward.

Weren't you hired as an extra, Marge? I remember a scene in the movie... Let's see, the script would have gone something like:

Act 4, Scene 2

The team gathers behind there captain outside of the ice rink, facing the coach.

Mike Eruzione "Gee coach, it seems like you are really working us hard."

The other players nod in agreement.

Coach "You guys don't know what hard work is. I'll show you hard..."

Just then a gorgeous ex-triathlete walks by, traverses the bricks on the outside of the rink, and then enters the building. The players and coach all whip their heads around in unison, causing several to get a crick in their neck.

Mike Eruzione "What were we talking about? Oh yeah, we can't wait to go to the rink today, Coach!"

The team all turn and push, fight, and claw their way through the door trying to be first in line to meet the young lass.

Shit, I remember watching that. And I distinctly recall playing the US vs. USSR hockey game at Chuck-E-Cheese. Not an old timer. Not, not, not.

"You're meant to be here. This moment is yours."

I think it was the greatest coaching achievement ever. Like taking a rag-tag group of Canadian college football players and beating the Steelers of the '70's, or the Niners of the '80's, or the Cowboys of the '90's - impossible. Too bad Coach Brooks can't be there at the reunion. I posted here when he passed, but nobody got the reference.

http://www.rockclimbing.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=37306&highlight=

I remember watching it after school. It was the most amazing thing we had ever seen. Not many people remember that beating the Soviets only got them into the gold medal game, they still had to beat the Fins.

I heard today that after the game a U.S. warship that had been playing cat & mouse with a Soviet sub sent the sub a message. It said only, "4 to 3."

If you haven't seen the HBO Sports documentary, "Do You Believe in Miracles?" you need to see it. I have it on DVD and I get the chills everytime I watch it.

25 years later and I've yet to see a greater moment in sports. Unbelieveable.

Well I was almost there. Living outside of Lake Placid most of my life we went to a ton of the events in ‘80, but not that hockey game. I still give my old man grief about that  Growing up playing and teaching hockey I spent a ton of hours on that rink, always a great feeling standing on that ice thinking about that game. Cool thing was two weekends ago I went home with a buddy to the ADKs for our first ice climbs, we drove up the hill from the ski jumps just as they were getting ready to relight the flame for the 2 week celebration. It was nice to be there after having seen it lit 25 years ago.

Not the best pic, but one none the less:

And for those who know Saranac Lake's ice castles:
