I want to add some route information to this area but there is no edit option. Each route just says to buy the guidebook. It seems to be only for this area. Im just wondering why?

http://www.rockclimbing.com/...Area.php?AreaID=8353

Thanks in advance

Physically, you cant do it because it is probably locked.

Why it is locked? I'm not sure. You will have to ask the Area Manager, skibabeage to see if she has any info on this.

I am also interested in what bobd1953 has to say regarding the legitimacy of these kind of ethics. Just because the original person thinks you should buy the book, does that mean noone else can post their own beta? Sounds silly to me but I don't call the shots in that part of the site. That is Bob and [user="polarwid"]Doug's area.

Any insight guys?

If you read the description of the area, it states that the guidebooks are being sold to recoup the cost of the bolts used to develop the area. The CANYON was developed in a way to avoid the massive grid bolting that occurs at a lot of newly developed areas (see SHELF ROAD for a recent example). The cost of the bolts came from a persons pocket, and that person is also the primary author of the guidebook.

I see no problem as it stands right now, buy the guidebook and support the resource that has been handed to you by the CITY OF COLORADO SPRINGS. It costs less than TEN DOLLARS, and all of the routes are listed in the database here, just not the location. If you are really desperate to add beta, put it in your CLIMBED BY section below the route.

I believe the author of this area did an excellent job in arranging for this resource to be visible in our DATABASE, but not taking away the business of the guidebook author (STEWART GREEN), who is selling the book only to recoup the time and expense he used in developing the area.

I will however, discuss this with the site mangement and see if it is consistent with site policy, the above is just my personal opinion on the matter...

Yeah dont get me wrong. I understand that Stewart Green put a TON of time and effort into developing the area for which I and alot of other Springs climbers are very grateful.

I myself have bought two guidebooks and I pack out a bag of garbage evertime I walk out of there.

There are certain things that I feel are important on specific routes that DONT appear in the guidebook. For instance last weekend I did a route that didnt describe the height of the route. Turns out a 60 meter rope doesnt get you all the way to the ground. This info is not in the book.

Also the sandstone there continues to be very brittle with holds breaking off.

I want Stewart and all others who put in the time and effort to fully recoup there costs, but at the same time I feel if the site is going to have the area in the database then it should be updateable, especially for safety reasons.

Try PM'ing ANYKINECLIMB, and see if he would be willing to let you add what you need in the route block, or PM him with the changes you need made. As soon as we hammer out the site policy on this, I will tell you a definative answer, but for now, I trust the judgement of the person who originally took the time to enter all of the sections and routes into the database. I am sure he would probably agree that some changes to the standard BUY THE GUIDEBOOK may be necessary...keep me posted...

So what is the point of the database? Ratings and routes are there but no description, why would I even care? I have been forced to upload a route and info to submit a picture, so they should allow beta. WTF

go to the area, click the edit button (it should be there if youre the area manager) find the lock status drop menu (at the bottom) and change it to "free for all". save the changes.

Thanks for the assistance. I read about one guy that worked hard to upload all sort of info for that section and it got erased, I would be pissed if that happened to some of the work I did, wouldn't you? Again thanks for opening the gates.

whoever locked the setting was being unfair. First of all, the guide book to red rocks sucks. i have climbed there a million times. think about the rock...this stuff is so brittle that the routes have been changing for two years since we started climbing on them, many of them being much different now than in 2004. secondly, the guidebook is this flimsy stack of cheap computer paper stapled together by stevie wonder and ray charles, and folded in half. why is it so cheap and of crappy quality? because the tools who made it printed off copies of it from the local college for free (except that the school paid for it), and then they want to staple them together and sell them for $10. Stu, are you out of your mind?

also, this is an open forum, thus, it should be OPEN!

if you checked the crag in the RDB, youd see that its current lock status is "free for all", which means that any rc.com member can change existing routes/sections or add new ones (youre can add stuff to a locked crag, but you cant edit it afterwards).
