On sunday we went to callahans and i have never done a trip report but we had such an... "experience" i figured i would comment on it. We started out parking at the gate because it was closed so we could not drive up to the parking lot above the climbing area. What my friend told me was a "gentle hike" a few days earlier turned out to be "pretty steep" on the carride there and once we started hiking it turned out to be hell. Almost 1400 vertical feet in 3/4 of a mile of switchbacks over rocks and logs with our 50lb packs on in 70 degree very humid weather(we don't get this in oregon very much). After climbing the switchback we decided to take a break and eat to let our legs rest. We looked like we had just taken a shower we were so sweaty from the hike. We checked out a few routes but they all seemed a bit to hard for us so we moved on to something easier to warmup on. A route that we couldnt' find a rating for but no worries, it "looked" juggy. My friend decided to lead it and after the second bolt was like wow, these are not jugs, they are all slopers. The 5.7 turned to a 5.10A(we are somewhat beginers. We usually toprope 10's not lead them). He finished up the first pitch and belayed the second up to him. The second then lead the second pitch and once again after 2 or 3 bolts realized that this pitch wasn't as easy as the one before and that it was a good 10c or maybe even an easy 11. Luckily the bolts were so close together that he was able to pull up on a QD at the crux and clip the next bolt to get to the anchor. I then climbed up both pitches to the top and all 3 of us sat on the two anchors. We got to our next(and last route) an easy 5.5 that just put us at the parking lot. I lead up it skipping every other bolt and about halfway up decided that my backpack was to heavy to climb with and i clipped it to a bolt. The third person came up the two pitches and attached my bag 10 feet ahead of them so that i was pulling it up while belaying them. No big deal till 10 feet later my bag strap broke(they attached it to the wrong spot) and the bag went flying down 100 feet and Luckily hit a tree instead of going off the 1400 feet we just walked up. He ran down and got it and we got to the parking lot. We figured the road would be a nice easy not to steep walk back to the car. We got on the road at 6:00 and got back to the car at 7:30, the road ened up being very very long(we estimated about 4-5 miles) we kept up a good fast walk the whole way down and took a shortcut where the road mad a U shape. By 7:00 it was pitch dark and we had only one light between the three of us. We didn't know how much further we had to go or where we were(it was a forestry road) so we were 20 miles from the nearest town out in the forest and a road we had not been on that we "assumed" went back to the car. Finally at 7:30 we made it back to the car, about 1 hour after we would have if we would have taken the steep trail. It was a fun "experience" If you read all this, wow good job. I am probably not as interesting as other trip reporters but this is my first. It was funny to us, but probably not to you.
