hey all, i was climibng at white buddha yesterday, and it just had quicklinks at the top. these were great for clipping into, simple and quick, but they seemed a bit flimsy. im sure i was being just a bit paranoid, but they arent locked, the gate doesnt hit the back of the biner, etc. so im just curious, are they a good reliable anchor?

What do you mean by "they aren't locked"? They weren't screwed shut? If not, they are dangerous. Quicklinks are very weak when open. The ones we used skydiving were only good for 500 lbf when open. -Jay

no, what i mean, is the gate device does not lock, and they all come undone quite easy.

I don't think that you know what a quicklink is. a quicklink is a type of biner that the gate only locks. the gate is just a coupling nut that screws shut. please explain what you mean by a "quicklink".

He knows what a quicklink is... It's a single chain link with a gap closed by a hexoganoal cylinder that's thread all the way through, so as to close the gap with threads on both sides of the gap. They are fine, I use these to install permanant rap stations, and do them hand tight. Just tighten them if they are loose. rrrADAM

regular quick links that you buy from home depot are super strong, you can lift cars with most of the smaller ones and the larger ones hold probably 2 cars. You can trust all of the quick links you find with screw gates!!

If he's referring to a quicklink, why is he saying that the "gate doesn't hit the back of the biner?" I think he means a non-climbing biner, probably a steel one that's pear shaped.

I agree his description doesn't sound like a quick link, he may be talking about a cold shut with a gate on it. The ones I've seen are made for climbing applications and will hold you with no problem.

I think I know what he is talking about. Jono, are you sure they are called quicklinks? There is another type that looks that same but does not have a screw in gate. They are called "snap links". They are shaped with one end that is big and decreases to a smaller hole. If this is what your talking about, im not sure if I would trust them.

My impression is that he is talking about what we call "quick-clips" at Rumney. I don't know if that is the standard name for them, but they are steel biners with wire gates that can be simply clipped into, rather than needing to untie and thread the rope through them. If that's what you're talking about, yes you can trust them. Remember they only have to hold body weight, and I'm sure they would easily hold much more.

I believe he's talking about industrial carabiners, they have gates with a weird sort of triangle shaped closure and they don't open very far. is this what you're talking about? they taper towards one of the ends and then flare. These things are completely trustworthy to hold your weight even with the gate open, they'd probably hold about 3 ppl with the gate open. Some of those are in place at one of the local crags and I've used them no problem. D

Nice punk ass reply. People were not "bitchin' on your ass" they were trying to figure out what you were talking about so they could give you a legitimate answer.

Perhaps not, Jono. But, with your question being stated the way it was, it looked to me as if everyone was doing their best to interpret your question and give a decent answer. Perhaps a little less flip response would have been in order. Apparently rrradam is either acquainted with you, and therefore knows that you know, or otherwise knows something that the rest of us do not know. It is always helpful when asking for advice to be a tad more circumspect in ones responses to honest answers and queries. And, btw, if you flip through much of the rest of this forum, you'll see what it looks like to actually have "your ass bitched on." No one even tried. Vulgar phrase any way, with not a trace of sarcasm that I can see. Theamish was right on the mark. My .02.

Don't worry about it "The Amish" are always hung up on something. First it's electricity, then gasoline motors, and now this! ...and for those who may be wondering... this post was also carefully crafted using SARCASM "the laguage of love". cheers!
