Sleeping in a parking lot in Las Vegas  (North_America: United_States: Nevada: Red_Rock_Canyon: A_Red_Rock_Overview)

I'm going to Red Rocks for 3 days soon, most of the nights I'll be sharing a hotel with some friends, except the last night. I probably will drop off the last of my climbing buddy at the airport around 10 or 11 pm, then I have 9 hours to kill before my departing flight at 8 am next morning. It would be too much hassle to pack my tent and other camping gear for just one night, I will have a rental car, so I just plan to crash in the backseat. The question is, do you guys know a place where I can park overnight and sleep in the car and won't end up under hoover dam, or should I just drive around and find the first non-sketchy looking place and pull in? The supertopo guidebook mentioned that some casinos won't harass you if you park in their lot overnight. Any help would be appreciated.

That may have been true at one time, but security in the parking garages are pretty tight these days.

Theres a free camping area just beyond red rocks. Just park there and sleep (in the car).

I have slept in my car a the truckstops just outside of town before. It is not the best nights sleep, but no one bothered me either. BTW the best sleeping position is to fold the back seat down so that you can sleep with your legs in the trunk.

I tried the 'sleep' in the parking lot once in Miami Flordia and got ran out of two hotel lots, scared out of another from gang activity. We finally went to a bar with the idea that they stay open late, and people are use to drunks hanging out in their cars. This ended up with somone peeing on my car, and another having sex right next to me in their truck.

Moral of the story is I went to the airport and slept in the terminal and got the best nights sleep. Forget the parking lot and find a comfy bench. Airport employees were very nice about it.

If you're going to be spending the night and it's a weekend, then what I've done in the past and didn't turn out too bad, was to park in a high-school parking lot and crash there.
I've spent a couple nights in the lot of the high-school that you pass going down the main street on your way to Red Rocks, no-one bothered us, although the soccer moms were looking at us weird in the morning when we slept in =)

If you can find a Wal-Mart, they'll let you stay there. It's their policy.

I would guess that you could sleep in relative safety in one of those upscale strip malls - Summerland, perhaps, is the suburb? - between Vegas proper and Red Rocks. I don't know how vigorous the secrurity partols are there at night, but it seems like that would be a good place to escape Vegas crowds and general riffraff.

This may be the most logical choice, since I'm dropping people off at the airport anyway. The question now is, will the employees in LAS give me grief for camping out on their bench?

There is a super walmart in N Las Vegas that is open 24hrs - where I slept in the car waiting for their automotive section open at 7 or 8 am (don't remember). I had a blowout and needed tires in the middle of the night. Nice thing is you are sleeping near bathrooms and food if you need either.

Other than that if you could find a denny's - don't think they patrol their parking lot much.

Ditto onthe Walmarts....they must cause dissention amoungst the local businesses, but they have security cams 24/7 and they lowere the lights enough to sleep. thats the best bet. and wear earplugs.

A partner of mine slept in his car at the Borders Bookstore just down Charleston Ave. from RR. No one ever gave him any grief. You can try there.

one caveat though: if you choose a recliner on the show floor, and don't wake-up by 7:00 AM, you have just completed the application process and will be given a filthy blue vest, chained to a register, and payed way less than you are worth. in time you may be able to work your way up to sporting goods or stereo's but i wouldn't count on it.
so be careful, many a climber has wound up selling bras to fat welfare moms who smoke "misty's" just because they partied too hard the day before epinephrine.

I've done this before. It's really no big deal, no one cares, and you won't be alone anyway. I'd recommend putting your carryons/check luggage in a locker or something as that will give you plenty of peace of mind. (I didn't, and had a tough time sleeping on top of all of my stuff.)

I'd also recommend not sleeping near the baggage claim. Chippendale's ads every other minute, all night long....

Just make sure that when you get back to the hotel after climbing each day you spend a lot of time gambling. If you play enough they will comp that last night for you. You might even get a meal or two. 8^)

I recommend Black Jack.

fargoan:

There are no more lockers at airports pots 9/11.

No need to carcamp at Wal-Mart:

Drop into the gym.
Meet people.
Couch Surf.

If you are fairly nice, have something to offer (buds, beer, belay et.al), and do not offend the olfactories you will find some digs post haste.

Dude, you are in Vegas. Have fun at all the places that stay open forever then sleep on the plane. if you have a funding issue that doesn't allow for this, sleeping in the terminal is the best bet. make your sleeping pad part of your carry-on. it will be like camping in your living room when you were a kid.
