The Aravali hills have some excellent climbing faces at Dumdama, Dhauj and Nuh, all situated near Delhi. Mount Abu, Golden Gorn spire, Adhar Devi slab and Sariska in Rajasthan also have good bouldering experiences. Pavagadh in Gujarat has exciting possibilities. In Himachal Pradesh, the Manali valley, Manikaran and Rohtang Pass, as well as Spiti, all provide some great climbing opportunities. In Maharashtra, Igatpuri, Malshejghat, Kanheri caves, Mumbra, Dudha and Manori beach all have great bouldering possibilities. In Karnataka, the Chamundi Hills have a variety of rock faces. Hampi and Bangalore are locations worth climbing. In West Bengal, Darjeeling and Susunia hills offer climbing experiences. The Himalayan peaks are the climbers dream. High-altitude climbers will enjoy the rocks at Sonamargin Kashmir and Gangotri in Garhwal, Uttaranchal.
Dhauj (Haryana)--55 km from Connaught Place and 10 kmpast Badhkal lake on the Sohna-Ballabgarh road. The rocks stretch out to the left and the right of the lake. Excellent climbing. Offers 250 routes of various grades of difficulty, good beginners' routes. Camp near the lake. Best time is October to March.
Dam Dama (Haryana)--65 km away from Delhi on the Delhi-Alwar highway. This is also a training area for NSG commandos. Camping: Either camp near the lake or book a place inthe nearby Haryana Tourism complex.
Lado Sarai Rocks (Delhi)--Situated between Qutab Minarand Saket, in a park. They are 10-m high and offer interesting routes for both beginners and experts.
Mt Abu (Rajasthan)--The training area of the StateMountaineering Institute near the Brahma Kumarisashram has some good training climbs. Golden Horn Spire--Six km from the town. There are some interesting climbs. The hike to thespire is worthwhile.
Adhar Devi Slab--The slabs above the temple are 150-mhigh and have about six routes.
Pavagadh (Gujarat)--Located 40 km from Vadodara on theHalul and Kalul road. The rocks are located on the topof the plateau.Camping: Accommodation is available on the top of theplateau.
Mumbai (Maharashtra)--There are innumerable climbingareas in the Western Ghats and many exciting climbs onthe pinnacles around Mumbai. The following areas provide convenient and safe climbing: Kanheri Caves, Borivili National Park--The boulders inthe Borivili National Park offer some interestingclimbs.
Mumbra Boulders--It takes about 30 minutes to walk tothe base of the Mumbra Boulders which lie above thetown on the right-hand end. The nursery boulders have some interesting problems to offer and are ideal for beginners.
Manori Rocks--Between Manori beach and Gorai beach.The main stack is called the `Camel'. The rocks arebetween four- and 10-m high. They are of good qualityand have something to offer for everyone.
Hampi (Karnataka)--The nearest train station isHospet. Buses and taxis run from Hospet to the town ofHampi. Accommodation: Local guest houses offer spartanfacilities. For better facilities you can try MayuraKSTDC located in Kamalapura (eight km from Hampi).There are numerous climbing areas around Hampi withamazing boulders. There is a guidebook to the climbingareas around Hampi which can be procured from the main bazaar.
Badami--Located in north Karnataka about five hoursfrom Hampi. There are buses and trains available from Bangalore, from Bagalkot and Belgaum. Accommodation: There are numerous inexpensive guesthouses and small hotels. There are endless climbingpossibilities here. Steep, overhanging boulders tolarge cliffs offer exciting climbing.Best season would be October to February.
Bangalore--Places like Ramanagaram (where the film Sholay was shot), Savandurga, Thuralli, Kabbal,Raogodlu and others offer excellent climbs. Accommodation in these climbing areas is basic.
Chennai (Tamil Nadu)--100 km north of Chennai is aclimbing area known as Kambakkam. It is an ideal placefor camping, hiking and rock climbing. Offers many possibilities of new climbs.
Calcutta (West Bengal)--There are some good areas around Calcutta: Susunia hills, Purulia, Matha Buraand Jai Chandi. They are located within a 300-kmradius of Calcutta.
Darjeeling--The basic rock-climbing area of theHimalayan Mountaineering Institute is at the Gobu andTenzing Norgay rock. Artificial Climbing Walls
