I'm guessing the actual wire gate on wire gate carabiners are made of steel? Anyone had problems with them rusting near salt water areas? I'm headed to Thailand soon, and wondering if I should bring standard gate biners instead of wire gates.

Non-wire gate biners use steel pins so either way you will have steel in your biners. However, rust should not be much of an issue. Have fun in Thailand.

They're at least as good as regular ones, as the intial application of this design was in the sailing industry, where, as you might imagine, they got frequently soaked by salt water.

i believe they're made out of a stainless alloy.
the technology was invented for the boating industry, actually, so i think it's the least of your worries. it's the rest of the biner that will be attacked by salt (especially on solid gate biners, which have steel pins and very un-stainless steel springs).

I'd worry more about cam axles than wiregates. I've used my gear a little bit on some sea cliffs and I don't have any issues with it yet...

I'd just keep an eye on it and wash your hardware down every now and then.

Cheers,
Jim
