Does any one have any beta on the Sawtooth Range. I was just up there on a family camping trip and the granite looks impresive with lots of possible routes, however I did not see one single climber there. John

The approaches are long and punishing. Be prepared to stack an aerobic effort on both ends of your climb.

There is an OLD climbing or Rock and Ice that features the Sawtooths. Check the library, they might have it. I haven't been, but I really want to. I heard there are killer long granite routes there.

The Sawtooths are a great place to climb. I have done alot of alpine climbing and backcountry skiing in those hills and am getting ready to start ticking off the trad routes this fall when it's slower at work. This is my home. Much of the rock is rotten and disintergrating thus the "Saw-tooth" look to many of the ridgelines. There are a number of good one day or slightly longer routes near Redfish Lake, such as "The Elephants Perch" and various other 'Perches' named after less gargantuan animals (goat, chipmunk). Also check out the "Super Slabs" for good friction climbing and huge runouts, as well as "The Finger of Fate" near Hell Roaring Lake for an awesome high mountain trad route with views like none other. The alpine climbing possibilites are nearly endless with tons of snow couloirs and winter mountaineering treks. As far as the approaches go, I don't know what you might consider punishing but I would hardly consider the approach to any of the rock or snow punishing, with the exception of some couloir routes with no actual trails to them. Have fun, stop in Ketchum and buy a guide / ask for beta at a store called "The Elephants Perch" -good people.

Hi there. In addition to the resources listed already, Rock and Ice did a section in their 1999 Travel Guide issue. It covered some routes in the Sawtooth, as well as other peaks (Mt Breitenbach, Cobb Peak). I hope this helps you out. If you need more info, feel free to PM or e-mail me.
