"They irritate me. Don't we see enough of his crap every day when reading magazines, watching TV and movies? I'm tired of it. They are demeaning to women by portraying them as sex objects. The people making these ads are juvenile. I don't think these ads are sexy at all. I think subtle exploitation of sexuality is fine and alluring in advertising or for whatever. Women are beautiful, and it's nice to celebrate beauty. For example, I loved the shot of Rikki Ishoy on the cover of Climbing magazine that caused so much controversy a few years ago. She was gorgeous and sexy in the bikini top, but she was strong and obviously a climber. The photo was natural. The Blurr ads have no taste. They remind me of pornography."

Not impressed. Hard to follow, and I really couldn't understand either the point of the article or the author's position. If I remember the first and second ones, they were decent, but the last two have been pretty much drivel.

yeah, I don't like the blurr ads much either. I usually just skip them. But then again, I usually skip most ads.

I don't like the blurr ads since I saw the first one. None of them show anything related to climbing. I particularly like the guy with a cigar, wine glass, sitting on a chair. I didn't read the article, just checked out the photos. Part 3 of that article shows some frontal nudity on the "Only in France" picture. I really don't agree with that, but I've seen tv commercials from other countries that show the same thing. The fact is, sex and skin sell products.

I haven't read any of them. Is this just another case of lesbian/feminists complaining about the exploitation of female climbers? Really, I don't know what it's about, nor do I care but sincerely, I'm kinda tired of the whole "Celebrate Women"/ segregation of women climbers bit. It's dumb. Climb like a girl? Even the title is lame. How about Climb Like A Climber? Anyone else get my drift?

the articles keep mentioning how these ads are specifically for the male audience... something i never understood about fashion magazines is that the ads are designed for their main demographic, which is women... yet these are the ads that blurr is trying to copy the style from.. id say the blurr style is almost even a satire of these ads, especially the one with obe... maybe its just me, but that ad cracks me up...

I think this ad strategy is stupid. so it got everyone talking, but has it gotten the merchandise to move off the shelves (the real test of sucess). I can tell you three climbers that are sponsored by blurr but I cant tell you one article of what ever crap they are trying to sell. And I wouldn't buy their gear even if I did know what they were trying to sell because I think their ads are in poor taste and don't want to support that.
Also I hate ads in mags that are nonrelated to climbing. I'm reading a climbing rag to see climbing. If I want to see compromised and objectified women there are planty of other mags for that. I know its hard for mags to turn down the money from a full page color ad and they have to make money so they can run what they want but for me these ads are completely ineffective in selling the product and leave a bad taste with the mag(s) they are run in. Now if they just stay confined to Urban Whatever I won't worry about it cause that mags title is bad advertising as far as I'm concerned.

personally I dont mind the blur ads at all, if you dont like them dont buy the product, who cares if they are not pics of people climbing, its a break from the ordinary
and women wouldnt be exploited if they didnt sell out... :D so obviously the ones in the ad dont have a problem with it, so why should anyone else?

nobody in this thread has mentioned the fact that one of the Blurr ads features Lisa Dumper (a female, last time I checked), getting on some hot lesbo action with another chick. So, does this mean that blurr is actually empowering to women? Is she bucking the sexist system by taking a man's role in the ad, especially given that she is a hell of a climber?
I think that the blur ads, like the annoying Red Chili ads from last year, are supposed to be parody of more mainstream ads, to a degree. People need to mellow out.
That said, the whole concept of "climbing fashion" is pretty lame to me. I'll bet that blurr has found a market, though.

The ads aren't the best I've seen, but there's not many good ads out there anyway. Sexy girls are bound to make it into the mags.
In the end, it all comes down to selfishness. Blurr gave me free gear and good competition last fall in Smith, and therefore I like them. :D Hats off to B_Unit climber manboy, who beat me in the dyno comp. ;)

As a marketing professional here's my take:
What other ads in the climbing rags get their own threads?
Love em or hate the ads - the marketing is working. Do you remember what patagonia's ad was about in the last Rock and Ice? Neither do I.
Ad's aren't intended to drive revenue (though this might occur) - their primary purpose is to build brand awareness....

Actually I do. Well maybe not the last one, but a couple of them. One was a couple of guys up is some pretty freaken cold weather. Another was that older dude climbing, I believe he had a piece of protection in his mouth.

Did something in the laws change recently? I noticed looking in some sports car and motorcycle magazines, there were entire spreads of women bearing it all. I thought I had picked up playboy at first by accident. I don't consider myself conservative about stuff like this, but I was a bit bothered that kids of any age could be looking through that kind of stuff unmonitered.
