Tried to get into Calaveras Dome on Sunday November 14, 2004. The gate was locked on both Ellis Road and Panther Creek Road. A new sign stated the area was "unsafe" for travel. No doubt a result of the fire.

Talked to the Forest Service Ranger today, January 31. They said Tiger Creek road will reopen around March 17 for fishing access. This is a long way in, dirt road, coming up the river. I would not recommend it. The Ranger said there will be no decision on opening Ellis Road or Panther Creek road till late spring. These roads go right thru the burned areas and are likely to stay closed for a while.

I ventured up to the Domes recently, for my first visit. As per my partner's directions, I drove the Panther Creek Road, to the Tiger Creek Road, to the Ellis Road. It was indeed a long and bumpy-ish ride, but not intolerable. Any idea when the Ellis Road (proper, from California rte 88) will be open this season? Or who to call for this info?
