Very good actually. I liked the used of slo-mo, overlap, b&w <--> color, and the pauses. Music was good too. I especially like videos where they show the process of getting a climb; I think videos appeal to more people when they know a climber didn't just on-sight a climb. That said, the only negative comment would be the "yah the big tick mark" voice-over. Please get rid of that!

Nice one! It would be better with better framing and more than one angle. Keep the climber's whole body in the frame for most, if not all of the clip. A lot of the time we can't tell if the climber's feet are on the rock or on the ground. All we see are hands on holds. Looks like a cool problem, can't really tell though from only one angle.

It would be nice if you could actually see the entire climber, the camera didn't bounce around like it was being held by tigger, and there was more than one camera angle. Also, watching people work v7 isn't super inspiring. The problem looked fun, though.

I have no clue as to which area in Oklahoma that you were in. I have been to most areas including several secret/not-so-secret areas and I think you may be holding out on us? My best guess would be in the Tulsa or Wilburton vicinity.

Not bad...

just going to offer a bit here...pull the frame back a bit, and show the entire thing, mix up the camera angles a bit to show just how little the holds are, plus a tripod may help.

otherwise, good flick. liked the use of color/BW, tunes were well generic club beats but not bad.

I'll be sending it on to a few freinds for sure man, well done for a first time

Two main points.

First, always have an establishing shot of the problem, otherwise the audience doesn't have any reference point for what is happening. It doesn't need to be the opening shot, that can be something more artistic (called a catch), but you need to show the objective as a whole, so that the audience can get an idea of the plot (to get up the boulder).

Next, different angles have been covered but, since you are editing, hold the camera still and let the climber exit the frame. Hard, since you're using one camera and trying to record the ascent, but you could also do this afterwards as well. If you don't do this you can't cut two angles together and always have to use full shots. This is the main problem with most climbing videos. It's often done to get "real" footage but if you're making a film than you should attempt, when possible, to use the rules of filmmaking. You had plenty of coverage and this is easy to shoot so you may as well try and get full value out of all of those attempts.

Okay, something else. When using double action (same shot twice) or multiple failures of the same move, cheat the action to speed up the effect. This means to edit each attempt differently for a more cinematic effect. Otherwise it's boring, or at least has elements of boring.

BTW, this is very good for a first attempt and shows some artistic promise, especially if you don't know anything about filmmaking and are just trying to show a problem. Good job.

Too bad he wasn't funny.

Not a bad first video effort. I'd recommend trying to think outside the techno box or at least mixing up a couple of different tunes in there. Multiple camera angles cannot always been had, but creative framing and editing can often make up for this. I can only imagine that there were bushes or something surrounding that boulder and not allowing the cameraman to stand back a bit further, but if you're going to do more of this then look into getting an extendable pole with a camera mount on the end: see example.

It doesn't matter what he was trying to do. It wasn't even remotely funny. It's like a pathetic little child's game and I don't get it. The vacuous masses seem to enjoy trolling, but I think it's ridiculous.

How is it 'catching' someone to post on a forum and then have people take them seriously? I just assumed he was some dumb country bumpkin who suffered from Big Fish In A Little Pond syndrome.

Yeah, congratulations on making yourself look like a moron... way to fool everyone. Kansasclimber must be really smart to act so dumb.

Has the thought of moving to another state crossed your mind?

I shudder at the thought of living in Kansas.

The video is ok... editing is good, but the camera man needs a little work. For you next homework assignment, I'd like to see four major improvements, most that others mentioned:
- Get the whole climber/boulder in some of the shots. Use a wider lens if need be. Wide angle adaptors are cheap.
- Higher vantage point. Set up a top rope to shoot from if you need to. Use a mono-pod. This should also help stabilize the camera.
- Less camera shake. The mono-pod should help with this too.
- More angles. Multiple cameras help, but you can fake it with multiple attempts of the problem.

~Adam~
