I totally agree!! I am pretty hardcore when it comes to work. I have two jobs, but am finding ways to sneak out early and stuff to climb more, and I am still new at it!!! It's like a sickness that takes over the mind. You climb, you think about climbing, you dream about climbing, your apartment and car seem to be submersed in a light haze of chalk that never seems to settle, and then there is THE JOB.....what to do?!?! I don't know the solution to the problem of cash either, I am starting to head in that direction, rapidly. It is a downward spiral. If you can balance work and climbing that's great, but when your that passionate it is a neverending battle. I can sympathize. Climb on.

I think that all people that have a full time job have this issue. I am lucky that I can move my schedule around to leave early if I want to get out for an evening session. I keep thinking that once I get a little more settled that I should go back to school, one for more learning and two because I would have more time for climbing. Perhaps a trade off between work and climbing is possible, like only work 4 days a week or work OT to take three day weekends. Manboy, who is probably off climbing in Mex, usually works like crazy (100+ hours per week) and then takes 9 months off to go climbing. Depends on the situation and the desire. Paul

Well, you could become route builder or climbing gear salesman. I am just a student so I don't really have to deal with the problem you're discussing.

Look around and see if local gyms are hiring for a part time position for route setting or just watching the wall. It puts you in the "Land of Plastic" for a little while but you can at least climb, plus you will find climbing partners pretty fast. I work about 20 hours a week in a locl gym and its just enough money to keep me happy and cragging often.

Since I finished school and stated working full time I have found it a good and bad thing when it comes to climbing. It finally give me the resources (cash for gas, gear, food etc.)that I needed when I was a younger climber. But, the big loss is the time. But, I still make it work. Most of my climbing partners work full time and we'll plan alot after work (go to work early and leave early) and meet to climb til we lose light. Also we find ourselves doing more major road trips on the weekends that we ussual couldn't afford in the past.

I have got my solution too. I own my own website design company and I put holds in my office that I just recently built. So whenever I get sick of typing code I climb for a while. Hope you all find happy mediums

Being in the military, it is even tougher for me to find time to climb. First, I have to have all of my shiz done. Then, I have to beg and plead the uppers to give me some leave. Then I go climb like mad. The trick is to find fun ways to train when you can't climb. AW

I have gone from Art Director to climbing artist bum; to Animation Director to climbing artist bum again. I like both; but climbing isn't everything; and I need income to live and feed myself and my wife. Right now I'm at a happy medium; most of my work is within' the climbing world, so my daydreaming is made a little productive...cuz I'm actually working. check out my junk- www.godismyrock.com maybe I can do some flash work for your new web company, mr. ratstar...

I truely am blessed... I inspect Nuclear Power Plants all around the US. I even pick my jobs from 'Rock and Road', givving me the oportunity, to climb at great areas. I only work in the Spring and the Fall, so Summers and Winters I take off to climb around SoCal. I'm currently working in North Carolina from 9-4-01 till early Dec.. The climbing is good here. After the job my fiance and I will take 3 weeks and climb our way back to SoCal. I recently did a job 45 minutes South of 'The Gunks'(my favorite place), and on the way back home climbed: Devil's Tower,Wy., Boulder Canyon,Co., Eldorado Canyon,Co., Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons,Ut., and South Lake Tahoe, Ca.. We're still planning where we'll climb on the way back from this job. I only started climbing 2 years ago, but have climbed in over 10 states, at the best places. I truely am blessed. rrrADAM [ This Message was edited by: rrradam on 2001-09-15 17:42 ]

i'm with ratstar. looking to get into building a wall either in my office or just at home. awesome break from coding! i found the medium on a recent vacation to maine. prior to that it was all work and no play. since the weeklong of hiking, climbing, biking and kayaking, it all made sense. work's not everything. it pays the bills and i do maintain it to keep my career going. just finding all the extra time to go climb balances things out rather nicely.

If you can qualify unemployment can give you a break from work and a little money to live on. I did it once.

What about becoming a climbing guide? So people will pay you to climb, and teach them to climb? I'm in school right now so i'm I'm hoping to get an IT where I can work from any where that I am at in the world. With the help of wireless internet. I'll keep my fingers crossed. hehehe

I am in the situation where i just left a job working full time at a climbing gym now i have all kinds of time on my hands and climb less then before because of the lack of other non working climbing partners i think a temp solution is that im looking for some sort of job that is at night so i can get out even when i have a job.

Dude, I totally get the point. Since I have been climnbing I have called in sick a few times, used all my vacation (4 weeks), and still want more. I have even hocked (sp?) an inherited ring to buy gear. I would be in heaven if I could quit my job and be a climbing bum out at Yosemite. Unfortunately, times have changed and the cost of living is way to f...ing high. But I will keep playing the lottery in hopes of winning one day.

How do you go about finding all those random seasonal fishing and rig jobs? Im not ready to head back into corporate america yet, I would rather climb so i would love to know where everybody finds these jobs that allow them to climb all season and still afford to live.

For the last six years I've been a seasonal whitewater river guide in Southern UT. It pays alright, and there are even good bouldering spots along the rivers. Then in the winter I can just climb full time in the desert. Right now I'm stuck in school, but am planning on doing the sma ejob thng in the future.
