Is it too hot to climb at shelf road in the summer? I'm going to visit my brother in Durango and am wondering if it's worth driving out there to climb for a few days in July.

The sunny cliffs are way too hot but you can chase the shade at The Dark Side, The Bank and some other areas. I've also climbed at Cactus Cliff and Menses on cloudy summer days. The beauty about climbing at Shelf in the summer is that it's dead. I guess the heat scares everyone away.

I think its worth it, especially with the right mind set. Obviously climb in the shade. The Dark Side is a great cliff. You can even chase shade at Sand Gulch, the Bank, Heaven, the Gym etc. Climb early in the AM. Average lows are around 60 for Canon city in July making for decent temps for those shady morning cliffs till at least 10 or 11.

I climbed there just about every weekend last summer and there were only a few times when the heat made it oppressive. Coming from Nicaragua I think you will be fine.

Seem to be alot of snakes out there this season.

Well, I'll be out there in mid-June. Shady walls + skimpy sporty bra top + stick clip = happy sport monkey.

The average summer low where I'm from is like, 85.

JTree is too hot, but not Shelf ;)
