Dude, there is so much untouched stone there, it's not even funny. All sorts of good stuff everywhere, but I'm thinking it'll be a while before I'd feel safe taking a trip there. Me: Excuse me sir, could you point out how to get to ______ Mr Taliban: (leveling AK-47) Talibaaaan! Me: Damn. Give it a solid decade of MTV inundation, capitalistic greed, and oversexed underfed model ads, and the country will be begging for expeditions!

It's crappy rock mostly, falls apart in your hands. Not worth climbing or taking the chance of blowing up on unexploded ordenance. -Don Diego-

Just saying that we dropped a bunch of bombs over there that were all made by the lowest bidder so what you think is a bomber hold might be more bomber than you think. A lot of the rock in that area of the world is crappy. Must be from too little rain over the last million or so years. Tried to climb in Sinai Pn. as well and found the same thing. The holds came off in my hands. -Don Diego-

Um, you guys should check with that new guy on the site Sentinel. According to him he has loads of experience and is the man when it comes to walls and such. He's even been to baffin, he told me so. Anyway, that dude has lots of steam to blow off, maybe a trip to fight the taliban and do some "hard" climbing would do him some good. Hahahaha

Would heartily disagree about the "bad rock!" It is, afterall, right next to Pakistan. Same mountains. And I can tell you that Northern Pakistan has plenty of stellar rock. Now here in the South, it's more crumbly, but there's some good stuff around as well. Back to the original post, I'd be very, very willing to do Afghanistan since I'm here now anyway. I'd recommend the North where it IS a tad safer. If you're serious about it, email me and let's set it up. Remember: there are no landmines on vertical walls. Ken

supposedly theres a lot of good fishing, backpacking, climbing, and all that stuff in afghanistan. from what i've heard and seen, it really is a beatiful country. but i agree with the ppl who said wait 10 or so years-- for the locals to a) become friendlier to the Americans and b) step on some of those land mines for us (somebody's gotta do it)

I was searching for links to my web pages at http://www.notsorry.com/afghan.html when I came across this web thread. Since I am the one that took that picture mentioned in the earlier posting, I thought that I would write a few words. The mountains of Central Afghanistan really are quite amazing -- there are some good reasons why invaders have found the place so hard to invade and control. (Think of Utah with more guns and more drugs and more people and more religion). I am definately more of a hiker or stroller than climber; but I did enjoy the hike that I made above the lakes in 1975. I took one picture that clearly shows that much of cliffs are clearly composed of ancient coral. This would account for the natural limestone that has formed dams around the lakes. After all my travels, this place is near the top of those places that I would love to visit again. I also have a few more photos of the many great cliffs and mountains along the overland route to Europe. This is a most scenic and rugged region. (My bus trip from Eastern Iran to Northern Greece took ten days and cost me $10 US !!!). Perhaps I will get inspired to post a few pictures on this site or at NotSorry.com. In the meantime, I would be interested in anyone who gets a chance to hike and climb in that area. (PS: One of my favourite old books is A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush by Eric Newby. I recommend it highly).

You're crazy. I somewhat admire that but no way in hell an American should go to Afghanistan. Some people would like you but too much risk.
