Going to Deep Lake area in Early August, 2005

Have a few questions:

How are the skeeters this year?
Any beta for N Ridge of Steeple (the III 5.8)? looking for approach, gear, descent, etc..
Where's the good camping? Clear Lake, Deep Lake?
Beta for Minor Dihedral on Haystack and the descent?

cool. thanks for the help. ya'll are great.

It's been wet, so the mosquitos may be bad.

Great camp spots above Clear lake on the way to Deep Lake. We usually camp on some nice granite slabs next to the wooded area. Very scenic.

Minor Dihedral is a great route and not all that hard for 5.9. Kelsey rates it Gr. III/IV. I would say it is definately a grade III, it goes pretty fast with only a few moves of 5.9. The first 5.9 face section is slightly runout, but not dangerous. Descent is pretty casual down the N. side of Haystack. The North Face route (5.6) is very worthwhile and will allow you to scope the descent and get warmed up.

Steeple Peak is also a great route. The approach is pretty obvious once your up on the E. side of Deep Lake. Get Joe Kelsey's guide "Wind River Mountains, climbing and hiking". His beta isn't super detailed but enough to get you in the right place.

Have fun, the Winds are awesome.

Thanks! Sounds great. Should I descend the 5.1 North Ridge or down the Grassy Slopes 4th class after doing Minor Dihedral? this is my fourth trip to the winds, but first to the Deep Lake Cirque area. I can't wait!

We came down the N. ridge and it was very fast and easy. I haven't done the grassy goat trail so I'm not sure about it.

The goat trail is straightforward but exposed. It would probably feel sketchy if you get caught in rain. When we did it (two years ago) there was a rap anchor half way down that allowed you to avoid a section of downclimbing.

Kelsey recommends the North Ridge of Temple (II 5.3) and it looks like a fun long easy day. Anybody done it? How's the fishing in the Deep Lake area?

I've done this descent a couple times and it is pretty straightforward, no rappel required. Finding it after doing the Minor Dihedral required a little bit of wandering at the top of the route if I remember correctly, but no big deal. The Minor Dihedral is a good route as described above, well worth it. When you get up to Clear Lake you'll probably decide to stop there as tree line isn't much higher. There's also a "5.4" or such S Ridge route on Haystack that I don't highly recommend.

Haven't done the route but hiked up to look at the peak. I'd expect a longer day than Grade II.

I don't fish but I know people go up to Black Joe Lk ? just above Big Sandy Lk specifically for the fishing. I'd guess you could have luck in Clear Lake.
