I'm in town (Pasadena) visiting my sister and her husband and I want to head up to Williamson tomorrow (Saturday). How crowded will it be? We're looking at the Stream Wall in particular, because he's pretty much a beginner and that wall seems to have easy climbs on it. But I'm thinking... It'll probably be pretty crowded. How bad will it be up there? Any other walls that have easy stuff that aren't as popular? Thanks!

(Also, while we're here anyway... What's the best way of toproping off cold shuts? I've never done it before. I've heard there are a lot of them at Williamson, no?)

Can't speak to the Williamson part of the question, but TRing off cold shuts is not recommended. If they're welded shut that's a different story, but that's not what you usually see. Cold shuts are used for one reason -- to facilitate easy lowering after leading. There are those that would argue that they are a bad idea even for this, but it's definitely not a good idea to add the additional stress and wear imposed by TRing.

TR off the shuts like you would off of bolts. 2 QDs.

Sundays have been more crowded than saturdays, the past few weeks. The crag is in the shade in the afternoon, get to the parking lot around noon., climb till dark. Bring a jacket. TR off draws, last climber can lower. Other easier route can be found at the Voices wall, Waterfall wall, Rambiln wall, Epitaph, Pyramid and Generation wall. Bring beers to drink in the parking lot after climbing and watch the sunset.

Get on early...

Get off early...

Go grab lunch...

Get back on later...

(It's good for your cardio)

...or go during the week

Enjoy

(We'd get there before 7...warmup on Mushroom...get several routes in by 10...then watch the large army of "ants" working their way towards us...)
