Climbing in Texas is sucking my will to live.It is all about football and rodeo and WalMart and Garth Brooks and Wrangler jeans. If it wasnt for Shiner Bock and Enchanted Rock I wouldnt live here.

Try Iowa...........

Actually, once you start to look (I'm sure its the same in Texas) there is climbing to be found. Or at least there are a few places within a three hour drive....

seriously, lack of climbing areas is one of god's ways of promoting a really kick-ass retirement in rock country.

peace out!

  No kidding!

It's not that I have anything against people that DO like that stuff.

It's just I'm not into wrangler jeans or country music at all!

And did I mention at all that the people here practically think of it as it's own country. (Texas is also the ONLY state that has written into it's constitution that it can succeed from the united states any time it wishes for whatever reason it wishes.)

One thing's for sure: If it weren't for hueco tanks, reimer's ranch, and enchanted rock, Texas would suck a whole lot more.

But, altogether, it really doesn't suck much (thanks to the climbing!).

There used to be a guy on this sight from Texas who might have given you all the necessary information that is required to squeeze all the fun possible out of Texas climbing. Alas, he has been banned. Where will you turn without his knowledge? Where is doosh when you really need him?

you want doosh, head to boldering.com.

he'll give you all the dome-rocking texas beta(as long as it is limestone..).

check out www.bloodyflapper.com for loads of texas beta.

if you like granite, head to e-rock, or if you want something 25 times bigger than e-rock, head to the wichitas in SW oklahoma. see, not everything is bigger in texas.

Maybe Ill just go to El Portrero Chico.I would kill to climb a GASP multi pitch route. At some of the gyms in DallasFtWorth they sell 20 and 30 meter ropes.Great for taking your small children toproping at Mineral Wells.I guess I need to change my panty liner. I did catch the climbing bug at the Wells years ago.

Looking at the map I see you are just west of Marble Falls. Close to E-Rock and Reimers Ranch but you might want to check out Continental Ranch down near Del Rio. Some great limestone climbing (100-200 ft routes) and it is not as crowded at E-Rock or Reimers. There are also decent single pitch routes at Barton Creek in Austin.

Count yourself lucky, where I am you can stand on your tiptoes and see the back of your head!

Doosh isn't the only Texan on here, biggernhell...

Central Texas (in no particular order):

Enchanted Rock
Austin Greenbelt
Reimer's Ranch
Stoneworks (gym)

McKinney Falls
Roger's Park

And I don't remember the area on lake Travis.

Drive straight to Hades.Take a left.I went to Reimers the day after my topic posted. The nice man gave me a button pin to put on my chalk bag.I had a great time. The approach was easy the routes were short and pumpy and I was the only one there.I guess thats why my momma named me Solo Climber. The rope swing into the Pedernales was choice.I will go back there. Thanx for the tip.

ok, I will pretend everyone that has posted except for two just had some brain farts or something. HUECO TANKS has probably some of the best bouldering in the world. you could go to Hueco Tanks and climb for months and still not get to all of them on North Mountain alone. great climbs all around. I am from Texas and I am a true Texan through and through and I know it can be a bit drab sometimes but it is still the best place to be. you can find anything there, and I mean anything.

well I just thought I would put my 2 cents in. HUECO TANKS rules.

The only reason I stay in Texas is for the live music in Austin and all the climbing spots. You gotta admit, Austin is the place for live blues.

Okay, everyone... quit adding hueco to your list of Texas climbing destinations. I do not– and never will– consider hueco to be in Texas. Historically its area was in New Mexico, and even today it is just barely in Texas. All you central Texas folks know how long it takes to drive to hueco from your homes, and it is most definitely NOT a local crag, unless you live in Hell Paso. Shit, Potrero is closer to Austin than Hueco is.

That said, Texas rules for winter climbing. that's it. I'm glad as hell that I got out for the summer.

cheers,
Paul

(oh, and ever wonder how come so may Texans are cruising the internet looking for climbing sites rather than actually climbing?)

Hot damn. I'll bet these goll dang doofs didn't even know you was a woman, neither. I've give you two guesses who.

Say sweet thang, I want you to get one a them friends you got over thar in Spain to take some good photos of you crankin' on boulder problems and routes. Make sure to get a good selection of shots. We need to see what you are up to over there. Plus there's idle talk about puting out a Texas climbing Women's calendar for 2004. The Army may be forcing you to work in Spain, but you is a Texas woman same as you always was.

I spent a fair amount of time in Terlingua, near Big Bend N.P. I was amazed at the amount of rock there, in and out of the N.P. At Indian Head, near Study Butte, I saw a few bolted routes on nice looking chocolate colored rock. And a LOT of climbable boulders. At the entrance to Santa Elena Canyon there were beautiful cracks, and a bunch of them!!! I didn't have gear with me, but I climbed around as best I could and really enjoyed it. The area north of Study Butte also has lots and lots of interesting looking rock, very climbable. The problem is, every inch of land there is fenced off. Which I took to mean on private land. There are established routes in the N.P. Most of those developed in the late 40's. Put up by Herb and Jan Conn.

I feel your pain... Having moved from TX to AZ, I am in HEAVEN! (There are actually climbs here where you need more than 3 draws!)

I was hearing good things about Continental Ranch before I left, but never made it out there. And don't forget Austin's great gyms! ARG RULES!!!!

Take climbing trips, and take them often!

Continental Ranch is turning into a pretty cool place. There's over 120 routes out there now, perhaps more. Here's the website address:

www.pecosriverclimbing.com

The nice thing lately at the ranch is the ease of getting access. No more waiting for trip announcements. You simply call up Howard (his number is on the site) and tell him you want to visit. If you have three people, you're in. This is considered the minimum safe number of people to venture out there, as the climbing area is a bit remote and accidents can create problems getting medical attention. If a group is already going, you can show up alone. Howard gives you the gate combo over the phone.
