Interesting. I'll have to read that. Is the multi-use area with in the area if the Preserve? It would be super nice to see some money go towards putting some sort of facility there. That area sees a lot of impact from human waste and as well, it just gets damn annoying to run up to the deli everytime you gotta take a shit. :roll:

Betty - I hope it doesn't seem that I am picking on you.....
Bring a shovel w/you, dig a cat hole, make your pooh, fill it in after use. A bigger hole if you're multiday camping, or a single-use for that after-coffee constitutional. Mission accomplished....
And a ziplock baggie for the tissue, of course. Pack it out.
Best pooh spot is off the trail but not hard to find, on a slope that had a sturdy tree to latch onto above it. Syle points if it has a branch stub to spool the TP on while you're getting business handled.

Happie-
I know how to dig a cat hole. I know about LNT. I've been in the backcountry on more then one occassion.
My point is this- first and foremost human waste is so toxic these days from all the friggin' shit we eat and the chemicals in it, that it doesn't degrade at the rate it should. Second, that particular area of land is too small to handle the load of the people on it. There are just too many people taking too many poops in too condensed a time period for the land to handle. In these situations, land managers often opt to use a pit toilet in order to concentrate the impact in one small area rather then burden a larger area with it. Hence my suggestion that they install some sort of facility at the multi-use area.
On more then one occassion, I have thought I found the perfect little area to make a deposit, only to find someone else has beat me to it. (Gross) When that sort of thing begins happening pretty regularly, it is pretty obvious that the land is not keeping up with the impact on it.

Weekend report: Get to Keene Valley heading towards Beer Walls; the rain comes down. Head to Keene to check out Barkeater. Everything wet and muggy, but hot. Head to Chapel Pond to swim, the rain begins anew. Go to Lake Placid. Watch Wedding Crashers.
Sunday, wake up to rain. Everything is wet. Head home.
You know, I wouldn't mind climbing one of these days.

Ah. We did Beer Wall in the a.m., got rained off a few times, waited for the rock to dry a few more times, did a few things on TR then went into Keene to ogle stuff at the Mountaineer. The rain stopped, and we headed to Creature Wall, got in one route before the rain and thunder threatened again and it just got too humid to climb. So we headed back. Rain over the entire state of NY even hijacked my plans to climb at the Gunks on the way home, so I just came back and am now enjoying my pointless day off.

Indeed; the air was thick enough to slice, but it apparently wasn't nearly as bad as it was on Friday. :shock:
Spent all day at Lost City doing TRSM stuff; the TRSM final got rained out, on Sunday. Rain or shine, yes - but in torrential downpours... hellfire and dalmations.

Swam upstream on Gelsa during the deluge yesterday afternoon. Who knew there would be a cascade showering down right where I was trying to climb? Successfully led P1 and P3 though in adverse conditions.

We ended up going to Joe Rockheads. Most definitely worth the visit if you're in the area and feel the need to pull some plastic. I wish we had a place like that in western NY to make up for our lack of real rock.

I think they were just opeing that place up when last I was in Toronto. Only climbed at the Oasis. That's a pretty kick-ass little gym as well.
Did you make it to Little Falls on Sunday?

Nope, we didn't make it to Little Falls, we decided to scrap it when we saw the forecast. This weekend looks good so far though, so I'll probably head down there both Sat and Sun (definitely Sun). If you don't have bigger and better plans, want to join?

I was doing things I've been putting off for far too long, such as laundry, dishes, cleaning my apartment, etc. And yes, that's a horrible excuse for not climbing. Congrats on the green problem!

Hey everyone -
I am doing the self rescue workshop this weekend (mentioned on Gunks.com homepage, with Mike Cimino). I'm going up Sat. morning and staying at the hostel. If anyone wants to get together for dinner, let me know.(Baccus is my favorite, so much so that I never try anywhere else....but certainly willing to.)

I went to Little Falls on Monday and climbed at South Vietnam, a small crag across the railway by the cesspool (mmmm...aesthetics). It was mostly dirty and vegetated, but we found some good routes. I tackled a lead above my limits with the intent to push myself and get more comfortable falling on gear, but I ended up onsighting it. If only that happened everytime...
Today I told my graduate program that I wouldn't be with them anymore. I've been working towards a PhD in philosophy for the past year, but I realized that I was no longer interested in doing anything that such a degree would allow me to do. Always wanting to describe arguments as "bomber" probably didn't help feeling in-tune with acadamia, either.
So earlier this summer I applied late to a program in Recreation Resource Management at another university in town. I was offered admission last week for the fall and accepted it. Starting over is good.

Congrats!!!! It takes alot of guts to start all over. I hear ya though. For a long time I was convinced that I was going to go to grad school and get a Ph.D. In the end, spending the rest of my life in academia didn't appeal. I want to do something that had a more direct impact on people's lives. Hence, I'm here in chiropractic school. Sometimes I have a hard time believing that I'm going to get to do something I love, help people and be a doctor too! Now, if only I can figure out to get more time in climbing... :lol:

Hmm.... methinks once I get into the more advanced mechanical engineering courses, I'll need a great deal of restraint not to use "bomber" and "manky" when discussing the beta on various engineering systems.
