I was just wondering after how long, if ever, gyms will give away or throw out their geaar for new stuff (particularly shoes and harnessess). I'm not in need of any necessary gear, but I wouldn't mind adding to my list of gear...you know, to look cool. 8^) Thanks

They NEVER throw away shoes... yuck! :P And they'd be crazy to give you an old, worn out harness for liability reasons.

A gym is a business. Why would a business give away prefectly good product? You may be able to get some old ropes dumpster diving at the right times, but I can't see much else. On the other hand: discounts= maybe. But beware, you get what you pay for. The climbing community is one that talks to each other. If something is in the discount bin, it's probably because there are many other products that do the job much better in about the same price range.

Sometimes we will be getting rid of old crap, and the staff gets first pick. Everything else is usually destroyed, or put to another purpose. Such as our ropes, we keep to use as fences when we have our comps. Or make rope ladders out of them. We sell off our shoes occasionally, but you wouldn't want them. The biners, atc's, grigris, etc ....well they usually never make it to the point of being retired as they usually go 'missing'. Harnesses are destroyed after they end their usable life span. Ask the owner, he/she may be willing to sell or give away some stuff.
