They found his remains in the snow halfway up Nanga Parbat, the ninth tallest mountain in the world. The clothes were still on him, including a wind jacket and shoes that identified the victim, apparently beyond doubt. Read more here.

In reply to: Didn't Reinhold throw Gunther down the hill to jumpstart his career? Troll, and a bad one at that. Go away. Didn't really make a difference to me before, but good to hear that this has put to rest rumors that have plagued (for bad and good) Reinhold's career. RIP Gunther Messner, wherever he may come to rest. Paul

I'd love to hear what Messner's detractors are saying now.

In reply to: In reply to: Curt, you're an a$$hole. Trust me, that's not news to anyone- especially Curt. In the grand old days of our sport, a hiker in Yosemite was screwing around near the gap across from the Lost Arrow Spire. He fell to his death in the notch between the spire and the rim. In deference to that death, the Park Service closed the Lost Arrow Chimney to climbing. Ivon Chouinard and Steve Roper were the first climbing party to do the chinmey after it was reopened to climbing. The body was still in the notch. Can't remember which climber led the pitch to the notch. But of course they knew the body was still there and they'd have to climb over it. So the leader (Roper?) gets to the body. The rope stops and the belayer just sits there for a while. Finally, impatient, he hollers up, "Well???? What's it like???" The response was *supposed to go down* in mountaineering history (but apparently not), "His Goddamned parka doesn't fit me!" DMT

In reply to: I guess you can't expect the grommets around here to know anything about climbing history. Curt Yup, round here history goes something like this: In the Beginning, there was curt. And curt was an asshole... or something like that. The biggest 'origins' debate is which came first, the top rope or the gym? DMT

Some of us knew what Curt was making reference to and still think Curt's post was tasteless. A more in depth reading of Steve Roper's "Camp 4" will tell you that Roper regrets the comment. Some people gain wisdom with age (Roper) while others just become dirty old men.

In reply to: well it rains in winter so you can't climb out doors Sure you can. It rains here too, then it turns to ice and we climb it, or snow and we ski on it. And nothing beats Joshua Tree in a downpour! (Taquitz...not quite so fun...) And I'm glad that there's some closure for RM. Screw what the "pundits" say, he lost the brother. Smitty

You have to understand that confronting death while taking risks yourself can be a very uncomfortable situation. People will make wise cracks without thinking to relieve the tension. I've heard of soldiers doing this.
