I've heard that the Whitney permit season ends sometime in September. I'd like to do the East Face, but need to stay at least one night at altitude due to altitude sickness (I'm weak). Is there a date that I can just go up there sans permit? On a side note, how is the route finding on the fishhook arete on Mt Russel?

Thanks for any help,

Josh

I had always thought that all the quotas ended Sept. 15th, except the Whitney area ( including NFotLP ). Looking at http://www.fs.fed.us/...on/wild/quotas.shtml it seems as if all the quotas have been extended until November 1!

Pretty soon you'll need a permit year round.

Josh,
I thought the permit season ends in october but I could be wrong. I am looking to do the east face also and was going to try and get a walk in permit. If you need a partner let me know.

I just did the east face Aug. 8th and had no problems with walking into the station to get a permit. I believe the lottery is only for the hikers on the main trail. You shouldn't have any problems. Have fun and start taking your Ginko for AMS.

I believe Jeff has it right. The North Fork approach is a quota trail, but not part of the lottery system in place for the Mt. W trail.

sneville, I could use a partner but I'm planning on being up there mid week. I think that my next two weekends are busy, and I'm off next week so I was going to head up there tuesday to thursday maybe. I was just going to solo easy stuff, but would love to get on something like Mithril Dihedral or other 5.10 routes.

Thanks for information everyone. Especially Murf. If there are that many permits open for Whitney, I'm sure I could walk in and get one mid week.

If you guys do end up doing the East Face/Buttress in September, I'd love to hear a trip report, or at least the conditions of the descent. I'm going in late September, and currently debating whether crampons & ice axe are necessary. Normally I'd think no way at the end of September, but Southern CA did get way more snow this year than normal...
