I'm Sharpie, founder of the Sharpie Kwan Doh indoor dry tooling system! After one week with me in my dojo, you'll be prepared to dry tool rental properties yourself with the strength of a grizzly, the reflexes of a puma, and the wisdom of a man.

Alright people first things first, at Sharpie Kwan Doh, we use the buddy system. No more dry tooling solo. You need somebody watching your backside at all times.

Second off, you're gonna learn to discipline your image. You think I got where I am today because I dressed like Queen Reno over there?

Take a look at what I'm wearing, people. You think anybody wants a roundhouse kick to the face while I'm sporting these bad boys? Forget about it.

Last off, my students will learn about self respect. You think anybody thinks I'm a failure because I go home to the rc.com hotties every night? Forget about it!

You want someone to watch your backside, and you're showing THAT much crack? No, way, dude... people have gotten lost in caverns smaller than that.

For this, you shall pay. Next time we do alpine, I won't lead all the hard pitches and you'll have to do 'em yourself.

2) You really don't want to camp. While the night time temps can be tolerable (assuming you have a warm bag... 0 F or warmer) the weather in the San Juans can turn sour at any time. Find someone with whom you can share a room. Someone on this thread (can't recall the user name) is looking... maybe you two can split a room?

4) Keep an eye on this thread... there is always a ton of good info posted: People wanting rides, sharing rooms, etc. If you work out the schedule right, you could arrive in Denver Thursday afternoon, share a CHEAP rental car (hint: Don't rent at the airport, as that's more expensive. Take the shuttle to downtown and rent a car there...) to Ouray, arrive early Friday morning, share a hotel room (hint: Just cause two men sleep in the same queen sized bed does not mean they're gay...) and leave again on Sunday evening for a Monday am flight. That'd be Fri and Sat night hotel, four days of car rental, and four days of beer. It *can* be done for as little as 200 bucks.

reno is right (politically, too  )

no camping...you can find someone to share a room with...my hoosier buddy, easton, may be looking. he's a solid dude and a great partner.

as far as money is concerned. you will spend too much. once the party gets going. you'll start buying drinks or bidding on an arcteryx jacket, but who cares...when you get back it (having spent too much money) will be the only thing that you regret. notwithstanding the possible exception that you live in OK and not CO.

and for what it's worth...if you share a bed with reno, it MUST be a king or else....

see you there...

r.r.

i just moved to durango so transportation is pretty cheap....about $200 eh i think i can swing that....and if anyone is interested in splitting a room let me know (send me an email at grant_bryans@yahoo.com) and i cannot wait to be there and try out ice climbing for the first time!

It's official!!! I just made reservations for the 11th through the 14th at the Best Western in Ouray! I am coming for sure! Anyone need a room? The room I got has two double beds (and room on the floor, of course). It's $65 per night, so I'm definitely hoping to split that with someone. Onbelay_osu, check your email.

My plan is to fly into denver early afternoon on the 11th, get to Ouray somehow, party like hell (and maybe learn to ice climb) until Sunday afternoon and get back to denver Sunday night to catch my monday flight back to the real world. So if anyone wants gas money and is going through or from the denver area, be sure to let me know! I'd hate to waste money on a rental car when i could be buying you all beer!

hey hey! i'm planning on coming and am getting super excited but have a couple of the typical beginner questions if someone can help me out
first, as far as gear goes, do you have to have your own stuff or can you rent/borrow/steal some from somewhere in Ouray?
and is it worth it to take a lesson?
that's all i can think of right now, is there any other info. i should know?
thanks guys :)

If you are only going to be in town during the festival days, you can come out in your skivvies and they will outfit you from head to toe with jackets, bibs, crampons, hats, gloves, TOOLS! 2 years ago, I took a lesson and learned some really great technical details that I probably would not have learned had I only climbed with more experienced people. It's a good idea. If you are totally green, take a lesson and then take what you learn and CLIMB! It's a very beginner friendly festival.

you need to have clothing (except at orvis  ). seriously, you need stuff to keep you warm and dry. boots are a big plus, but you can demo them...they just have to be back before 4:30 or so. you can demo almost everything else...tools, crampons, etc. or you can borrow them...i will have some extras, sharpie will, as will others.

don't take any lessons. you can get them cheap during the fest. the clinics will be posted sometime in later october or november and then you can register (fast). 15 bucks for 2+ hours with a stud or studette ice climber in a superb environment (sometimes schwag is included). just don't "no-show" or you'll be charged 100 bucks.

the biggest question, which you didn't hit on, is where to stay. figure that one out now...it becomes a critical issue later on. talk to sharpie, he knows what's up with the availability.

come early and help with the set up and you may get an awesome gift. we did last year.

hope you can make it....

and you better like to party...

regards

i'm ok with rolling around in my "skivvies" but i'll probably want to stay warm, so underwear parties will have to be inside (or just so drunk you don't notice how cold it is) ...
no worries redpointron, i'll be up for partying :-D i'm getting really excited about this already.

thanks for all the advice too. i think i've got a place to stay, so atleast that's not a worry, now i just have to get my plane ticket and a ride to ouray. can it be january yet? i don't think i can wait another 5 months for this!

God it sounds like so much fun, I'd love to go
But for the (very expensive) 13 hour drive from Omaha - I have to make sure that I get way TOO much time on the ice for my few days!
I like to climb so much I can't move - it's my only chance each year to ice climb.

One of these days I'll have time and money to spare and get to check out the festival. Until then I'll have to take my long weekends (not during the festival) to tie me over!

Have a GREAT time guys, can't wait to hear the stories and see the photos

Since you mentioned it, and since this thread needs a good bump in the backside...

In reply to:
GEO: You want breakfast?

Sharpie: I think I'm entitled to it.

GEO: You want breakfast?

Sharpie: I want the pancakes!

GEO: You can't handle the pancakes! Son, we live in a world that has griddles. And those griddles have to be controlled and managed by men with baldheads and peculiar moustaches. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Flamer, Tracyroach? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for panckaes and you curse the men who make them. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: that waking everyone to the sound of grinding coffee beans at 4AM, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, feeds people...You don't want the cakes. Because deep down, in places you don't talk about at rc.com gatherings, you want me on that griddle. You need me on that griddle.
We use words like waffle, French toast, Streusel...we use these words as the backbone to a life spent cooking something. You use'em as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very brakfast I provide, then questions the manner in which I provide it! I'd rather you just said thank you and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a spatula and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you're entitled to!

Sharpie: DID YOU MAKE THE PANCAKES?

GEO: I did the job you sent me to do.

Sharpie: DID YOU MAKE THE PANCAKES?

GEO: YOU'RE GODDAMN RIGHT I MADE THE PANCAKES!!!"

Ah, the classics.

You do . . . hard to believe that there are climbers in Omaha that I don't know??? there can't be THAT many of us!

Acutally I will be in Ouray, but not durring the festival! We only have 5 days open to take the trip to Ouray - 2 days of driving and 3 days of climbing - so I'd rather spend those 3 days on the ice as much as possible. I think the festival would be too crowded for me to get a whole seasons worth of ice climbing in - in 3 days!!

but it's all I get!

Have a GREAT time . .
