Hi sara I have yet to leave for ukraine--(oct. 2nd's the date!) but I'm not sure yet as too where i will be posted or what...however, i do plan on at least trying to climb... I was hoping on getting real rock--but as it's almost winter, probably a gym is more likely--damn. im not gonna bring my rope--i figure i can get one there, or something...but i will bring my shoes and harness--just see what happens... Im from Reno, Nevada--where are you from? and why are you in Ukraine? let's exchange emails too...

yes there is a good amount of climbing/climbers in ukraine. Rather strong competitors too, in bouldering and speed. Best climbing in Crimea - here are some pics, although it's in russian. There is a gym in kyiv and in most of the big cities although don't expect teh biggest and best gym ever.

I looked at the post's title and thought, "maybe I wrote that." but then I saw the username and new it wasn't me. anyway, it was familiar, so I decided to read it. Anyway, I'm in group 28. I assume you are group 29. I hope your site visit was a good one. Hope you got lucky and are near some good climbs too. As you might tell, I'm living in Crimea (but I'm finding my way. I'm actually the only Mike in group 28, so feel free to send me an SMS from the phone list. As to your questions, I'll try to give you my take. I, like you, arrived with a pair of shoes, a harness, and a chalk bag. I then had most of the rest sent, minus the rope (retired it anyway). Stuff is expensive here, and I couldn't rationalize buying new stuff when what I had at home was not only in good condition, but cheaper than what I see here. Anyway, the rope I'll be buying. The rest was sent. If you are ever in Crimea, let me know. There is a lot down here. Also, there are some other PCVs who are climbers too. One even built a gym at his site. Perhaps we should start a working group :) Good luck with everything, Mike

In reply to: Hows the climbing in Israel? It is very popular here. I heared that there is 8000 climbers here (I of course doubt it...) There are plenty bolted rocks with difficulties ranged from 5a to 8a (or approx. 5.7 - 5.13b/c(?) according to the USA standard). The gyms are also in place. All is very close. From Tel-Aviv it is possible to reach about 5-7 bolted rocks in a 1 hour drive. Climbing is possible all year round (no snow at all). See for more information in RC section devoted to Israel. http://www.rockclimbing.com/routes/listState.php?CountryStateID=140 Have fun, Michael

No. I've never been there. But I know people that have. The place is called Wadi Ram (http://www.rockclimbing.com/routes/listArea.php?AreaID=3076 ) The nice place is also in Sinay: St. Catherine http://sinaiclimb.h12.ru/

Travis, I've been away from this site since November, so I'll try to find you and SMS you this week. I hope there is only one Travis in Donbas. BMXer, I have no idea how we do it. Perhaps embrace everything and make it your own. Good luck. How's Armenia treating you?
