Lafayette Campground is probally the closest. I wouldn't call it cheap by any means, I think the going rate is $24 /night. If you stay there, make sure you get a site as far back from Rt.93 as possible or you will be listening to trucks driving by all night long.

Double check on the WMNF website for the particular area, but you can camp nearly anywhere as long as you're 200 feet off of a trail and away from streams. I think you may need to be 1/4 mile off of the Kancamagus, but that's still not that far a walk. All you need to pay is the parking fee (I think $7).

They charge too much for a camp site, just dive into the woods and enjoy the seclusion. Camp fires are even legal in most cases, just be smart.
