Ok, I'm a surfer turned climber because I needed something to do during flatspells, and now I'm addicted. I'm learning all about this great sport(?), but I still don't understand the difference between TRAD, AID, and Sport Climbing. Can anyone help me out? Thanks!!

TRAD: In trad (traditional) climbing you are climbing the rock and placing your own pieces of protection as you go. Nuts, hexes, and cams are the most common types of protection. You fit these into cracks or other features on the rock then clip the rope to the piece. Then, should you fall, your protection will catch you (hopefully) so you don't hit the deck.

SPORT: On Sport routes, there are permanent bolts, or occaisonally fixed pitons, drilled into the rock. You simply clip the rope into each bolt as you pass it to form your fall protection.

AID: Entirely different monster here. In aid climbing you are not actually climbing up the rock with your hands and feet, you are hanging on one piece of protection while you place another piece slightly higher that you will in turn hang on while you place yet another piece above that one. The idea is to be able to climb up a wall that doesn't have enough features to be free climbed.

Get the idea?

WRONG,WRONG,WRONG,WRONG!!!
Trad(traditional), This is climbing only on holidays that have been recognized and celebrated for a period of years.(normaly 20+)
Sport, This is climbing with various equiptment used in sports. The current favorite being softball mits and hockey goalie gloves.
Aid,This is the least used method, unemployed, often unemployable, folks are provided funds and tickets for food and medical care in exchange for them climbing(a pity)

Trad climbing: What people who are too weak to sport climb do.

Sport climbing: What people who are too chicken to trad climb do.

Aid climbing: What people do when they get too old to trad or sport climb.

Ice climbing: What people who don't have the sense to come out of the cold do.

If people say gear routes are "trad" climbing shouldn't they say sport routes are something like "new age" climbing or "non-traditional" climbing?

Very good!
