In reply to: Oliver Perry-Smith. He returned to the US in 1914. Did he ever do any climbing again? 8^) Unknown at this time... Here is a "translation" of a GERMAN CLIMBING HISTORY page... Looks like he died in 1969... http://translate.google.com/...er%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D
In reply to: Olive Perry Smith one of the old fathers of the Saxonian mountain rise at all. A little always seems it to me like Karl May's old Shatterhand, that over the large pond sometimes comes back around then its hero acts to achieve and afterwards, nearly mythisch, to disappear in the far homeland: -) This origin from Philadelphia, the USA, is it also, which it still the small glow of the mysterious lets attach. 11.10.1884 born, he came 1902 to Dresden, 13,05,69 deceased for the first time he in the USA. Albert Kunze describes, his first meeting with the American with a its (that?) first climbing routes in the Elbsandstein. Perry became member in the club "black fire-place" (against the name that had been written forcing the heavy Wandkletterei on the flags.) in also the Rudolf Fehrmann was. The Ergeiz Perrys may have been over-developed however sometimes something; -) so reported Johannes Klitzsch with it in the Blossstockscharte to have confessed and is enough itself and to have argued intensively, who now to the Wenzelweg before pastes is to go over at the end of gnatzig separate ways - without to have climbed! With his Erstbesteigung the scratching gate guard it komplimentierte one, already on the paragraph standing, Aspiranten to the entrance back and during it otherwise with each ring saved (and Huenig on the belly of the Jungfer down to slip let catch over it at the ring) jumped over it with the storm on the Hauptdrilling1908 over the own ethical rules and could it artificially be built (lower Baumann sat firmly in the ring). Over Perry it gives whole number of unterhaltsamer episodes, about over it like it that to gendarmes of Schandau the furnace still divided, over its Bugatti racing car or its damp-merry secondary committing of the Perryrisses at the stonestone stone; -) Beside the Kletterei was Perry by the way also more inspired and very successful ski runner and Springer! 1912 it won among other things the Austrian championships in ski Springer. In September 1914 Perry with its family left Germany. important Erstbesteigungen: Scratching gate guard (1905, VI) Devil tower (1906, VIIb) important Erstbeghungen: Falcon stone, south tear VIIb

While we're at it, I'm still trying to track down Canadians David Oldridge or Don Best. Please PM me if you know their whereabouts as Stephane Pennequin of the Nut Museum would like to talk with them...thanks!

Thanks, Doug. There's a great article in the 1964 AAC Journal about Perry-Smith by J. Monroe Thorington, but it ends with him leaving Germany and returning to the USA in 1914. He seems to have quit climbing in Europe a couple of years previously and put all his energies into skiing, becoming a champ. But I can't find any reference to him climbing again anywhere. He presumably returned to the family home in Philadelphia, so if any of you PA climbers know anything, contact me! 8^)

here's a recent photo of Bryan out at Indian Creek back in mid March: http://www.rockclimbing.com/...p.cgi?Detailed=51311 he was checking out a pair of new high tops, before warming up on Generic Crack. had a crew of students with him to work on the trails the whole week. played Jimmy Buffet on his guitar and was sipping on "grapefruit juice" the first night we met him at the campfire out at Bridger Jacks. fun fun times
