Winter Climbing

I currently live 1.5 hours from JTree and Tahquitz (and 5 hours from the Sierras). I will probably have to spend Aug '06 to July '07 in Charlotteville for work.

Are Seneca / NRG climable, or other climbing areas in VA/WV climbable in the winter? Where can I get my fix for LONG multipitch moderate routes? What about skiiing (both downhill and cross-country touring)? As for ice, I suppose I need to drive up to NH?

Thanks,
Al (alfred.kwok@pomona.edu)

I'd think the New and the Red over in Kentucky would have enough sunny crags and moderate elevations to sustain winter climbing.

Down the road in NC...you could keep yourself busy for a season working the best routes at Rumbling Bald, Sauratown, Stone, and even a couple routes at Pilot.

Hell no you don't have to go to NH to ice climb! We've got good ice down 'nar, you just have to find it. When it looks like it's actually in, PM me and I can give you some help for WV stuff near the New. And yea, check out NC if you want deep-winter rock climbing.

Edit to remove smart-ass comment contrived before I thoroughly read the post.

Ahhh....and other winter activities: NC gets LOTSA ice...you've just got to know where to find it.

Skiing: Snowshoe, WV is your best skiing in the area
Virginia has a couple of places that don't look too shabby
NC's skiing will be pretty comparable to Virginia's...smaller but- the same kind of conditions

Multipitch...not going to be much that way in the New, I think I've heard that Senaca is pretty harsh in the winter.

NC is going to have your moderate multipitch...Looking Glass, Rumbling Bald, maybe Moore's (it's north facing but some walls get enough sun and the temps at some point will permit climbing)

yes, climbing at the new is possible in the winter, especially on the north side of the gorge(endless). ice is far and few between and doesnt last very long, but it does exist.

Cold is never the problem. As long as it is dry it should be OK to climb.
