Many climbers have their own personal opinions on which brand is the best. In my area Sterling seems to reign supreme. Most sport climber i know prefer the Sterling 10.3 marathon.Now I am preparing to buy a new sport rope and i was just wonder what some other people thought was the best brand.

I don't know if there is a real consensus. Personally, I like my 9.9 Edelweiss rope... think its an Onsight. I always go for duel color 60 meter. Ropes last so long for sport climbing, its the diameter that matters the most to me. Its not like its getting the thrashing of an alpine or big wall rope.

I've been using a 10.5 60mm rope and it does hold well, but is also very heavy on a long route. I'm considering on a 9.9mm rope for ease of movement when pumped.

I have always been fond of Sterling. I think that 9.6mm is the way to go. They are lighter and easier to handle.

Sterling makes a few good ropes but they cut cost more than any other company that i know about and there dry treatment is dunking a bundled rope in a barrel of silicon. Which attracts more dirt and turns you hands black.

wvextreme5, If all your doing is sport climbimg, you don't really need a rope larger than 10mm. Point already made; they don't get thrashed as hard. The previous post made poor reference to Sterling dry. I happen to like them. There are other good ones also. As far as dry treatment goes why pay the extra? I don't know many sport climbers that climb in the rain.

Beal
Roca
Edelwiess
Sterling

hi there
For me BEAL is THE BEST, i got two choices,10.2 for all day climbing, and 9.7 for a very hard routs, the second one is very ligth and easy to handle.

PMI all day long. I am a "Vertical Specialist" for PMI, so I am biast. However, I was using their products long before I became one of their climbers. I use their 10.5's and I have their 9.4 which is probably the best rope I have ever used. On top of it, it is a dry rope and 70 meters long. Darn thing is great for all types of climbing and is low in weight. Thinnest single you can get (I do believe, correct me if I am wrong) and as far as weight, a little less than a standard 10.5 X 60 meter. Awesome rope! www.pmirope.com

I picked up one of the Sterling 9.6mm Nitros but haven't had a chance to use it. I sport climb only so it will be my redpoint rope.

What ever you get, don't buy a Mammut. Worst rope I have ever handled. Mine is thrashed and I've only had it for two months. I thought that was bad until last Saturday when I used my buddies brand spanking new one. By the end of the day (falling on it about 4-5 times) the shealth was shreaded. Truely a piece of junk.

I prefer dry ropes, simply because I find the non-dry tend to fray very quickly (similar to an overused tennis ball), and on a 10.5mm rope, this can make handling it difficult. The dry tend to hold their shape and make for smoother belays/raps.

I a Mammut tusk, it has been alright with me. I recently climbed in the Chimney's with little problems. I agree that the dry ropes tend to have less fray problems. Of course, I bought my Mammut because I couldn't beat the price. Europe has some of the best prices on gear.

I love my Beal 9.7, but I find if I am really working a route it gets a little interesting 'cause the rope has a LOT of stretch Its a very very light and easy to handle rope though ...

I use the Lanex Rocky 9.8mm. Its an excellent rope for sport. Fairly cheap as well. Although this rope is pretty hard to find unless you live in Europe. But you can buy them online at www.climbingshoes.com.

From my experience in both belaying and in climbing I find that I prefer a 9.8 Maxim but for top roping I also like my 10.5 Bluewater. Both of my ropes are 60 meter. I find this is also the best all around length for most areas in southern Oregon (where I live). The rope you purchase really depends on what type of climbing you intend upon doing most of the time though, if you lead get something under 10mm and if you mostly TR then I recommend 10.5 or larger.

i love my 9,5 mammut. i also hear that beal stinger kicks a*s, not to mention the <10mm masterpieces from edelweiss.

OK i mostly lead but i still take friends out and what not, so i top rope with them, and some times at the end of a long day setting up a top rope is just easier for cooling down. so what size rope do you recomend. i was looking at the boster 2 witch is 9.7mm. so i do probly 70% LEAD 30% top rope

I like PMI's and Mammut. Personally the Mammut Tusk is a great buy. Its cheap and light and works great for sport climbs.
