An Ascent of Half Dome in 1884
by Alexander Proctor

I believe the story has also been published elsewhere. It is a firsthand account by Proctor (who became a famous American sculptor) ascending what is now the cable route on half dome. Someone had already been up that way and left some bolts and a cable, which had been damaged over the winter). Proctor and his partner doing a combination of scrambling and standing on old bolts trying to lasso the next bolt up. It's quite an interesting account of a little piece of American mountaineering history.

Has anyone heard of this or other early ascents of ol' Tissiak?

Anyone know what the earliest recorded ascent was?

To answer my own question...

George C. Anderson got the FA of what is now the Cables route. He did it in 1875, "barefoot using rope and iron pegs. First Female Ascent by Sandy Dutcher (wearing long dress), also in 1875."

Anderson is mentioned in Proctor's story as having put in the pegs that he later used to climb it.

I've read exerpts at least. Probably not the whole original.
A long time ago.
Possibly in Summit or Mountain mags. Most likely Summit.

Yeah, just like freeclimbing the Nose.

Dumbass, haven't you read the feminist thread?

Treat the ladies nice or they'll leave us to have a sausagefest.

Sarcasm all round, but you figure out where it goes.
