I will be taking a trip out to Denver the first weekend in November to check out a grad school program. I was wondering what alpine routes would be (are generally) doable by that time of year. I know we have lines getting done back home in the whites by November.

Ideally, I am looking for a nice long day, say something in the IV or V AI4 range- just a loong day of perfect ice. A summit would be nice. Does anyone know of anything that meets these criteria on Long's Peak? Long's would be ideal, but I could be persuaded to alter that preference rather easily.

Any pics would be a huge help.

Finally, are there any ice specific sites for climbing in Colorado? Ive been to climbingboulder.com, but theres got to be more ice out there than they would lead me to believe. Right?

Thanks in advance,
Brad

Hi Brad,

There's usually a slew of alpine routes in around that time. You best source of information is www.climbingboulder.com. Their database of alpine and ice routes is extensive, a conditions section will tell you what things are like this year, and last year conditions posts will clue you in on what to expect. If you exhaust that resource, then shoot me an email.

Chris

One Confusing thing: http://www.climbingboulder.com puts many of the alpine mixed routes in their rock database and can be found at:http://www.climbingboulder.com/rock/db/rmnp_alpine/

Hey guys, thanks tons for the beta; keep it coming.

Much thanks also for clearing up my confusion re climbingboulder.com.

Another last question: Does anyone have any guidebook preference for the area? What is the consensus best book to buy for alpine ice out there?

Not only am I a guidebook whore, but I plan on moving out there in '07; I figure I might as well shell out for a book now.

Thanks again.

You can email Jack Roberts - he gets out in RMNP all the time and usually knows the conditions. During season he updates conditions on his website, www.jackrobertsclimbing.com. His email addy is on the site.

The new version of his guidebook should be out this winter. Bernard Gillet's RMNP guide has good info on the classics.
